Show Trivia
On its premiere in June 2012, the series became A&E TV's most watched original series launch of all time with 4.1 million total viewers.A&E canceled the show after the third season. A few months later Netflix picked the show up for its fourth season. Netflix continued to carry the show going forward, through its sixth and final season.Wyoming license plates have stacked numbers 1-23 on the far left that represent the 23 counties in the state. That means that residents can tell what part of the state a vehicle is from by looking at those numbers, something that everyone in Wyoming knows. License plates on the vehicles in the show start with "24", a non-existent county.Robert Taylor bases his performance of Walt Longmire largely on Indiana Jones and many of Clint Eastwood's western characters. The scenes for Longmire's cabin are filmed in the Valles Caldera in the Jemez Mountains of New Mexico. The caldera is a 14-mile-wide volcanic crater. It is now a national preserve. Several Westerns including The Missing (2003) and The Lone Ranger (2013) have used this location.Based on the "Walt Longmire" series of mystery novels written by Craig Johnson. While a guest on Conan (2010), Jeff Garlin promoted Longmire (2012) by showing a clip from the show, instead of plugging his own show, The Goldbergs (2013). He explained, '''Goldberg' is a huge hit, No. 3 comedy on TV. 'Longmire' needs help. I love 'Longmire' and I want that show to keep going.''Henry (Lou Diamond Phillips) rarely, if ever, uses contractions.Sheriff Walt Longmire (Robert Taylor) carries a 1911 .45ACP Colt Government Model with custom stag grips for his duty sidearm. Unlike most who choose to carry the M1911, he carries it in Condition 2 (mag inserted, round chambered, hammer down). This isn't necessarily a technical error. There was a time when this was the acceptable method of carry, although now most M1911 users do not recommend it for safety reasons, instead choosing Condition 1 (mag inserted, round chambered, hammer cocked, safety on) which is the way the pistol is designed to be carried. In the books (long before the TV show was cast), Longmire often imagines casting classic movie actor Robert Taylor to play himself. Coincidentally, in the TV series, a different (and arguably better) Robert Taylor was cast for the leading role. The series takes place in a fictional Wyoming county, but is filmed in and around Santa Fe, New Mexico, USA and Las Vegas, New Mexico, USA. The sheriff's office is on the plaza at 1811 Hot Springs Boulevard, Las Vegas, New Mexico, just across the plaza from 230 Plaza Street, historic and famous The Plaza Hotel, Las Vegas, New Mexico. Many scenes are also filmed in the town of Pecos, New Mexico, in the Pecos Wilderness north of the town of Pecos, and with some scenes filmed in a Espanola, New Mexico casino.Carrying his sidearm the way he does, round chambered and the hammer down, makes a lot of sense for two reasons. From a theatrical standpoint you get the effect of his cocking the hammer. It also agrees better with his character who "sometimes likes to think before he talks (acts)" by making discharging his weapon a more deliberate act.The show's fictional Red Pony Bar is in Madrid, New Mexico, and is actually called the Mine Shaft Tavern.Walt's beer of choice is Rainier, named in honor of Washington State's Mount Rainier. Longmire is the name of the historic district within the Mount Rainier National Park; it's named for James Longmire and his son David (1844-1925). James Longmire led a wagon train of travelers to the Tacoma, Washington area in 1853, when David was nine years old. David Longmire bought large tracts of land in the Wenas Valley area of Yakima County, Washington State between 1871 and 1878 (large enough to provide homesteads for seven children, two stepchildren, and at least fifteen grandchildren and two great-grandchildren upon his death), and lived there for well over fifty years, becoming one of the leading citizens of Yakima County.Walt Longmire wears an "RCA #30" hat made by the O'Farrell Hat Co. of Santa Fe, New Mexico, USA. You can see the O'Farrell logo on the inside lining during Episode 1 of Season 4.The name of the Crow nation in their language is Apsáalooke or variants including AbsarokaKyle Chandler turned down the lead role.In the series pilot, the license plate on the sheriff's vehicle has "5" as the first number, indicating that the vehicle is from Albany County, Wyoming, USA. That is where Laramie, Wyoming is located, along with the University of Wyoming, the only university in the state. Laramie is in southeastern Wyoming, bordering Colorado. The Snowy Range mountains are just west of the city. Interior shots are filmed at the Greer Garson Studios on the campus of the Santa Fe University of Art and Design, Santa Fe, New Mexico, USA.The word "fracking" is short for a natural gas extraction process called fracturing, which is the subject of some episodes involving the energy company where Vic's husband worked. It is also a fictional word, originally used in Battlestar Galactica (1978) in place of the F bomb. It continued to be used in the 2004 update (Battlestar Galactica (2004)). Katee Sackhoff, who portrays sheriff's deputy Victoria "Vic" Moretti in this series, portrayed Lieutenant Kara "Starbuck" Thrace in Battlestar Galactica from 2004-2009. Other actors from Battlestar Galactica (2004) who appear on Longmire include two Cylon characters connected to Starbuck: Michael Trucco who played her husband Sam, and Callum Keith Rennie who played Leoben.Over six seasons there were 63 episodes produced, of which 10 episodes were produced for broadcast/streaming each season, except for the second season, with thirteen episodes produced for broadcast on A&E.These Longmire actors also worked on Westworld (2016): Zahn McClarnon (portrays Officer Mathias), David Midthunder (portrays David Ridges), Tantoo Cardinal (portrays Crow Medicine Woman), Julia Jones (portrays Gabriella Langton), Irene Bedard (portrays May Stillwater), and Louis Herthum (portrays Omar).Actress Q'orianka Kilcher was on Longmire season 1 and David Midthunder was on Longmire seasons 2 and 3.
