The Dark Road

- The printed message is in Plattdeutsch (Low German), the spoken language of Old Order Amish and Mennonites. Sheriff Longmire spoke in first year level Hochdeutsch (High German), the standard German language taught in the Unites States and probably elsewhere. Without special training, students and former students of the latter would not be able to recognize and translate the printed message, except for the word "mich" (me).
A Damn Shame

- The guitar instrumental and vocal at the end of the episode is "Hallelujah" by Jeff Buckley from his 1994 album, "Grace." The song was written by Leonard Cohen.
- At 11:14- the letter reads: "I Love You" and it is signed: "Ray".
- Cast member Lou Diamond Phillips (born 1962) and guest star C. Thomas Howell (born 1966) were teen movie heartthrobs in the 1980s. Phillips starred in La Bamba & Young Guns. Howell was in The Outsiders.

- Both Robert Taylor and Gerald McRaney (Barlow Connally) both appeared on Dolly Patton's Heartstrings.
An Incredibly Beautiful Thing

- Whereas the series is filmed in New Mexico, the train featured at the end of this episode has been confirmed to be the now defunct Sante Fe Southern Railway.
- Tom Wopat's first appearance as Sheriff Wilkins.
- Tom Wopat, who played Luke Duke, was always seen on the run from the sheriff in Dukes of Hazzard. Now is paying a Sheriff on Longmire.
- There is an image of the BVM wrapped in a Mexican Flag over the door to Ellis' store.

- After the raid at the Tattoo Shop, Branch mentions that they all have records. Walt says stake it out right in front of them, so they hear it. Branch drives a squad car which is marked with ACSD logo and badge. It would be hard to believe that they wouldn't notice Branch and his Charger sitting outside 24/7.
Unfinished Business

- The basic plot, involving a gang rape of a mentally challenged Indian girl, is drawn from the first Longmire novel "Cold Dish." Many details have been changed.
- At the end of the episode when Branch is waiting to see Jacob Nighthorse he sees a Dog Soldier headdress which is a direct reference to the episode "Dog Soldier" in which the end scene is Jacob Nighthorse in full dog soldier leather nailing himself to the earth underneath a full moon as a traditional dog soldier would.
