Pilot
S01E01 Episode aired 17 September 2013
- When Terry is pointing out people in the squad to Captain Holt, you see Scully and Hitchcock with a female middle-aged detective, Daniels, and they are introduced as a group. After this point Daniels is never seen again, and Scully and Hitchcock are instead seen as partners.
- Terry tells Peralta that Captain Holt caught the Disco Strangler, a reference to the Eagles song from their 1979 album 'The Long Run.'
- The murder victim's name in this first/pilot episode is an offbeat insider's reference. The wealthy murdered man is "Henry Morganthau", and in real life, the Morganthaus have long been one of New York City's most accomplished families. Even more pointed in terms of cops and crime, the real-life Henry Morgenthau's grandson is Robert Morgenthau, who was the longest serving District Attorney in Manhattan's history, from 1975 until he stepped down in 2009.
- Amy and Rosa are wearing the same badge number in this episode.
- The episode scored 6.17 million U.S. viewers.
- When they're looking for people who might have seen the murder, the man that takes the picture that Jake and Amy have is Fred Armisten who was on Saturday Night Live with Andy Samberg (Jake Peralta).
- In the opening scene Jake says they are looking for "3 white males one of whom has tat sleeves on both arms", yet in the footage all 3 men are wearing jackets covering their arms.
- Captain Holt introduces himself as "Ray," but in season 5 tells Terry only children use names ending in "Y," even going so far as to rebuke Terry for suggesting people sometimes call him Ray.

- Peralta has named his desk mouse Algernon; this is a subtle reference to the book, Flowers For Algernon, by Daniel Keys, where the mouse is called Algernon.
The Slump

- During a scene in where Peralta goes to Holt's office to talk to him, some of the files on the shelf are organized in order to form the LGBT flag.
- The missing elderly woman's name turns out to actually be "Ethel", the same actress also played a woman named Ethel on Parks and Recreation, another Michael Schur show.
- Pete Davidson's acting debut.
M.E. Time
S01E04 Episode aired 8 October 2013
- Sgt. Jeffords is revealed to have hidden artistic talents and fills in for the precinct sketch artist. In real life Terry Crews (the actor who plays Sgt. Jeffords) is also a talented artist and used to draw and paint on the side to get extra money to support his family during his football days.
- As a prelude to the long-running gag "title of your sex tape," Peralta responds to Santiago saying "I could go on and on and on" with "...is something no lover of yours has ever said."
The Vulture
S01E05 Episode aired 15 October 2013
- Guest-star Dean Winters who portrayed the titular Vulture is well-known for playing Mayhem in a series of commercials for Allstate Insurance. A new Allstate commercial with Winters debuted during the premiere broadcast of this episode.
- Guest star Dean Winters has also played a dectective in the movie Rough Night and in the TV show Battle Creek and Law and Order: Special Victims Unit.
- Rosa comments that Tonya Harding is thick, agreeing with Jake that she's hot. Rosa reveals to the squad in season 5 she is bisexual
Halloween

- Dustin Whitman is played by Grammy-winning musician Scott Mescudi, better known by his stage name, Kid Cudi.
- The lawyer, Gil, hides his hands (in his pockets) like his character on 'It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia' who is extremely embarrassed by his hands.
- Andrew Friedman also plays a lawyer--Uncle Jack--in It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia (2005).
Old School

- Jimmy Brogan's character was evidently based on Pulitzer Prize winning author Jimmy Breslin, an American journalist and author. Breslin was well known for his columns in various New York City newspapers as well as several novels.
- When Captain Holt corrects an inaccurate statement made by Peralta, Peralta responds by saying "eh, six of one." This is short for the colloquialism, "six of one, half-dozen of the other," another way of saying "potato, po-tah-to." In other words: "we're both saying the same thing." Of course, Jake's original statement was not at all true, so his qualifying remark is more whimsical denial than anything.
Sal's Pizza

- Patton Oswalt's character is named after Associate Producer Marshall Boone.
- Bruno Amato who's playing Mario and is suspected of burning down rival pizzeria Sals actually played Sal the owner of a pizzeria in The Internship.
- This episode pays homage to 1989's Do The Right Thing. In that movie, Sal's Pizzarea is burnt down and is located in a Brooklyn Neighborhood.
- When Boyle is distracting the firefighters at Sal's Pizzeria, he says he has an adopted son. Later in the series he and his girlfriend adopt a boy from Latvia.
Thanksgiving

- First instance of Scully singing. Joel McKinnon Miller studied opera and theatre at the University of Minnesota-Duluth.
- In this episode that takes place on Thanksgiving Day, Detective Peralta avoids watching a football game he is recording. The television is showing a game between Ole Miss and South Carolina, which actually took place September 24th, 2009.
Christmas
S01E11 Episode aired 3 December 2013
- The pre-credit sequence features the song "Christmas in Hollis" by Run-DMC, also used in Die Hard, Peralta's favourite film.
- In the cold open, Boyle claims to be 42. The actor who plays Boyle, Joe Lol Truglio, turned 43 the day before this episode aired.
Pontiac Bandit
S01E12 Episode aired 7 January 2014
- Despite the Pontiac Bandit's habit of stealing only Pontiacs; a Chevrolet Lumina APV (a rebadged version of the Pontiac Tran Sport) and a Dodge Viper both appear on the bulletin board profile of his transgressions.
- Doug Judy is initially arrested for identity fraud, this subtly foreshadows the twist that he's the Pontiac Bandit as he later frames his hair dresser as the bandit in a case of reverse identity fraud.
The Bet

- Before the date begins, Jake tells Amy to promise she won't fall in love with him, to which Amy responds it won't be a problem. This is a direct quote from the Nicholas Sparks classic "A Walk To Remember".
- Part of Jake and Amy's "first date" non-date takes place on the roof of a building, much like Jim and Pam's "first date" non-date on The Office, another Michael Schur show.
- In a previous episode Jake brags about searching "cheapest date possible" but in this episode he admits to spending $1400 on the date. This is foreshadowing his feelings for Amy.
- The Mustang Jake picks Amy up in is a replica of the one from Bullitt.
The Ebony Falcon

- The princess castle Boyle assembled in an earlier episode can be seen in Terry's house.
- Included in the list of items missing from Gina's apartment is a set of homemade nesting dolls with the likeness of actor Joseph Gordon-Levitt.
- Before Terry can go undercover with Jake and Charles, he mentions that he'll have to read his daughters a bedtime story. The 1960s children's book Go, Dog. Go! is his book of choice.
- Boyle compares Terry's strong but gentle demeanor to comedian and TV personality, Ellen DeGeneres.
- Among items stolen from Gina's apartment is a lock of Mario Lopez's hair, which she bought from an online auction. In a later episode, Gina not only meets Mario Lopez, but invites him to her going away party (Ultimately denying him entrance at the door.)
Operation: Broken Feather

- Melissa Fumero was actually shocked in the scene where Amy watches Jake fall off a ladder after his failed attempt to use it to dunk a basketball.
- The episode begins with a football game of which Sgt. Jeffords is the star player. In real life, Terry Crews was a football player before becoming an actor.
- Fred Armison reprises his role from the pilot episode.
- The music played during the football game at the beginning is from the tournament fighting scene of the movie "Karate Kid" ("You're the best" by Bill Conti and Allee Willis).
- Joe Theismann tells Peralta that he broke his other leg. Theismann, in real life, was forced to retire from football after his leg was broken during a football game. This is one of the most famous, yet gruesome, football injuries of all time.
- Peralta finds himself in an auction and has a conflict with Adam Sandler who plays himself on the show. Samberg and Sandler worked together on That's My Boy and Hotel Transylvania.
The Party

- Terry's painting of Holt from 'M.E. Time (#1.04)' can be seen on the credenza in Kevin's office.
- The name of the restaurant at the end of the episode is Parettis, a nod to star Chelsea Peretti.
- Shows on Holt's DVR include: Masterpiece Mystery, Bones, Sherlock, and How It's Made: Contact Lenses.
- Marc Evan Jackson (Kevin Cozner) also worked together on The Good Place (2016) as Shawn. Michael Schur created both Brooklyn Nine-Nine and The Good Place.
- The background music in the restaurant at the end is Brahms Variations on a theme by Haydn, Variation 3 - Con Moto.
- Kevin says he met Holt while writing an article for The New Yorker. The New Yorker is a magazine that focuses on cultural life in New York, as well as global social issues and politics. Its average audience is middle age with a $100K income.
Full Boyle
S01E17 Episode aired 11 February 2014
- "Full Boyle," the episode's title (and Boyle's emotional self-sabotage tendencies in matters of love) is a play on both the character's name and the common phrase's actual meaning. Being at "full boil" generally means to fully commit to an act or attitude, though it's usually used to describe a person expressing outrageous anger or rage. Boyle's tendency to go full boil into a romantic endeavor generally results in the Full Boyle.
- The episode's title is spoken 9 times by characters. And also is the number of characters in the episode's title.
- During the morning briefing, Gina comments that she can't believe she was briefly attracted to Boyle. At the end of the season they have a drunken hook up that continues into season 2
The Apartment

- It is revealed that Gina and Jake grew up together. In real life, Chelsea Peretti and Andy Samberg did in fact grow up together.
- Loan shark Frank Spond works at the office of Frank Del Tredici & Associates. One of the show's executive/co-executive producers is Luke Del Tredici.
Tactical Village
S01E19 Episode aired 4 March 2014
- "Kwazy Cupcakes" has since been made into an actual playable app on the app store with levels leading to Sprinkle City.
- First time someone shouts "Nine Nine!" (Boyle and others chant it behind Jake as they arrive at the tactical village.)
- At the end of the training, Jake gives his team t-shirts. Boyle's reads VICTIM, Rosa's reads CORPSE, Scully's reads BABY, Amy's reads YOUNG BOY and Terry's is not shown on camera.
Fancy Brudgom
S01E20 Episode aired 11 March 2014
- In the stationery shop, an employee (Beth Dover) and Charles (Joe Lo Truglio) plan details of Charles' wedding. In real life, Beth Dover and Joe Lo Truglio were engaged at the time the episode aired and were married just over one month later.
- The magazine has no Danish language except the word "Brudgom"
- This is the first episode not to feature Jake Peralta (Andy Samberg) in the cold open.
- The scene where Peralta tries to get Boyle back into the car after bailing as his best man was shot in the 800 block of South Los Angeles Street in Los Angeles's garment district. The addresses on the signs and awnings (e.g., 832, 834) are authentic, but the full address on the storefront of the Fantazi store - 834 S. Los Angeles St. - was changed for this shot to 4138 Nodella Street. Matthew Nodella is a producer of the show.
Unsolvable

- It is revealed that Jake's favorite musician is Taylor Swift.
- First time we hear Terry's exasperated "WHY?!" which eventually becomes a recurring catchphrase of sorts.
- The solution to the "Unsolvable Case" is incredibly similar to Peter Pettigrew in Harry Potter: Both men faked their own deaths by seemingly being killed by a close friend in a blast, leaving nothing behind but a finger they had removed themselves. The biggest difference is Pettigrew framed his friend for the supposed murder, while Nate Dexter framed and killed his friend.
- Dexter dying in a boat explosion is a reference to the TV show Dexter's finale. Dexter is thought to have died on his boat in the finale.
Charges and Specs

- On the bat-mitzva flashback Jenny's blue dress looks like the dress Amy wears in S01E13 "The Bet". Also in that episode Jake said "you look like every girl at every bat-mitzva I ever had a crush on".
- It is said that Captain Holt's favorite breakfast is a plain bagel and a water.
- On the day of hearing, Santiago brought in a drug dealer called Issac. He would later reappear in season 3 episode"The 9-8".
