  3. The stunt team, lead by second unit director Garry A. Brown and stunt coordinator Tanner Gill, along with Tancharoen, had only around a day to plan Ward's entrance in the episode, involving him driving through a warehouse between pillars while giving a "dissertation" on the future of Hydra. Brown had seen the location during the production of the second season, and had asked that it be used given that building was up for demolition. It was subsequently written into the script for "Purpose in the Machine". The pillars were only about 18 feet apart, and unlike on a film the stunt driver Greg Tracy did not have much time to practice the sequence and work out the best way to do it.
  4. The American flag on the wall in the squad's recreational area is an old American flag having only 48 stars on it instead of the modern 50 stars.

4,722 Hours

  2. The number of hours in the title, 4722, is equivalent to 6 1/2 months
  3. The episode was named one of the best television episodes of 2015 by The Atlantic.
  4. The majority of the episode was filmed in a work quarry in Simi Valley and in Northridge, Los Angeles near the Mojave Desert during the day
  5. Both the episode title and Jemma Simmons's quote ("4,722 Hours. The average person can survive up to three weeks without food, but only 100 hours without water.") seem to continue a tendency of inserting the number 47 (this time as 4,7). ABC even promoted the new series Wicked City during the commercial break at 13 minutes by flashing a neon sign saying "IN 47 MINUTES." In the last season's finale of AoS (in the last 2 eps.) they had a six foot tall 47 in the room where the artifact that transports Simmons was kept. In the last few minutes of the season finale they pan back and show the carrier number on the island: 74. Established in Star Trek TNG, reversing 47 is an acceptable way to insert the number.
  6. In June 2016, IGN ranked the episode as the best in the series.
  7. Henstridge was named TVLine's "Performer of the Week" for the week of October 25, 2015, for her performance in this episode, particularly for appearing throughout the whole of it, and for the more 'heartbreaking' scenes near the end.
  8. The series Alone (2015) chronicled trained survival experts being left alone on an island and having to find their own food and water. 9. "4,722 Hours" originally aired on ABC on October 27, 2015, and according to Nielsen Media Research, was watched by 6.40 million viewers within a week of its release.
  10. The astronaut says his NASA mission through "the monolith" occurred in 2001. This would appear to be a clear allusion to the classic film 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968).
  11. This is the episode with the fewest characters of the series. Also, the first episode to not feature Mack, Hunter and Bobbi since their first appearance in season 2.
  12. Simmons is shown using her phone for a long time after arriving. She mentions after a month conserving battery power and later on that Fitz engineered an improved battery. After 1,490 hours (62 days) she is shown playing a video. After over 3,000 hours (125 days) she's still using the phone and it has enough power to interface with the old NASA computer. The iPhone 6, which was the current model as of the 2015 air date, when fully charged had up to 10 days/240 hours/14,400 minutes of standby time. Using 15 minutes of battery per day would allow the phone to be used for 960 days, well in excess of the 196 days she was there.
