Misery

- Reading from the unauthorised Lindsay Lohan biography, Jess reads, "She was born on the freakiest of Fridays". This is an homage to the movie Misery (hence this episode's title), where that melody plays in the background while the Kathy Bates character uses a sledgehammer on James Caan's foot. - The "About the Author" page in Nick's novel reads: "Nick Miller is a law school graduate, professional bartender, and small business owner. Originally from Chicago, Mr. Miller currently lives in Los Angeles, California. He has also lived in New Orleans, although that was mostly a frenzied, barely remembered fever-dream bender, during which he wrote the majority of his magnum opus, The Pepperwood Chronicles. He thinks it's fun and cathartic to write about himself in the third person. Nick Miller wants the world to know that Nick Miller is a wonderful and handsome man, and his father would be very proud of him, had he lived to have the opportunity to steal his son's first novel."
- Zooey Deschanel was pregnant with her second child during filming of this episode.
- As a distraction, Jess says that her dad just dislocated his thumb getting off the couch. Earlier in the season, Winston tells Aly a secret about him doing the same thing.

- Schmidt's first name is revealed: Winston.
- Final appearance of Megan Fox as Nick's girlfriend Reagan.

- Merle Streep, the book publisher, tells Nick that he has published the whole "Bitch Witch" series. In season 6, episode 19 at the book fair when the kid delivers Jess' note to Nick and Reagan, the booth behind him says "The Bitch Witches."
