Season 1

Pilot

1. The exterior shots of the bar were filmed on the corner of Pine Street and Peck Street in Providence, Rhode Island. The building shown is Hanley's Ale House.
2. Bear hunt : At 21:58 Coach sings "there's bears in my house"
3. After this episode, Damon Wayans Jr. (Coach) does not return until season 3 episode 7 "New Girl: Coach (2013)." Wayans Jr. signed on to this show at the time his other show, Happy Endings (2011), hadn't been renewed or canceled for a second season. By the time filming for the pilot episode of New Girl completed, Happy Endings (2011) had officially been renewed. That show's renewal caused Wayans Jr. to temporarily depart from this show and return working there.

Kryptonite

1. First appearance of Winston Bishop.
2. Nick refers to himself, Schmidt, and Coach as being "Reverse Mormons" in the restaurant when they go to get Jess after she's been stood up. Although this is just poking fun, Mormons (LDS Members) do not practice polygamy. There are offshoot branches of the LDS church that do practice polygamy, but the LDS church does not associate with or support them.

Wedding

1. First time Schmidt's past weight problem is referenced.
2. Schmidt at one point references "Sid and Nancy" to Brooke, the girl he likes from high school. Max Greenfield's costar Zooey Deschanel stars in 500 Days of Summer (2009) and her character Summer also makes this exact same reference.
3. The song played at the end of the wedding, A Groovy Kind of Love by Phil Collins, is also played at Nick & Jess' wedding.

Naked

1. Jake Johnson and Lake Bell worked together in No Strings Attached (2011), a film also written by Elizabeth Meriwether
2. Bear hunt : At 19:50 Winston says "a bear might fall on our trampoline. "
3. In this episode there is a plot point that Jess can't say penis even though she clearly says it in the first episode.
4. Winston says "maybe we'll get a cat. Maybe it'll play the piano." In fact, Winston does get a cat called Ferguson in a future episode, and he is shown to have a mini piano toy in a future episode.

Cece Crashes

1. Bear hunt : At 9:16 Jess says "that's how people from Chicago say Jess. Like bears or milk"

Thanksgiving

1. Bear hunt : At 8:48 Paul says "it's like Goldilocks and the 3 bears"
2. At the very end of the episode, someone in line at Best Buy is wearing the same hoodie as Nick.

1. Zooey Deschanel sings the Christmas song at the end of the episode.
2. Stephen Amell (Kyle) would later go on to portray his most well known role Oliver Queen series Arrow (2012), alongside Katie Cassidy, who had appeared as Brooke, in the earlier episode, Wedding (2011).

The Story of the 50

1. Nick says that he doesn't believe in dinosaurs. The actor, Jake Johnson, also starred in Jurassic World (2015).
2. Schmidt says he's a "warrior poet." In Season 4 episode titled Micro, Jess' date has a tattoo that says "warrior poet."
3. Bear Hunt: The stripper says he is a baritone in his choir.

Jess & Julia

1. First appearance of June Diane Raphael as Sadie.

The Landlord

1. Remy greets Nick and Winston as "Coach" and "Brad". Brad is Damon Wayans Jr's character name on Happy Endings (2011).
2. The mural of the "sexually-charged zero-G tea ceremony" in the closet, which is signed by a "Gian Carlo" whom Schmidt also identifies as the painter, is in real life entitled "Digital Space Girl". It was actually created by Los Angeles-based artist David Larks, who also produced many T-shirts, book covers, paintings and murals for the show.
3. Jeff Kober (Remy) and Gillian Vegman (Kim) have both guest starred on Supernatural (2005). Kober was in season 2 episode 19, Folsom Prison Blues, and Vegman was in season 10 episode 6, Ask Jeeves.

Valentine's Day

1. Though they don't appear in any scene together, Ryan Kwanten (Oliver) and Lizzy Caplan (Julia) both guest star in this episode. Ryan Kwanten and Lizzy Caplan were in True Blood together in which their characters were in a relationship.
2. Schmidt mentions the first season of The Vampire Diaries, Stephen Amell was in the first season of The Vampire Diaries as a werewolf called Brady
3. In this episode, Ryan Kwanten's character is named Oliver. Stephen Amell guest stars in this episode as Kyle. Stephen Amell is the star of the CW show Arrow where he plays the DC character Oliver Queen. Ryan Kwanten and Stephen Amell appear in the same scene in this episode.
4. Jake Johnson appeared in Clark Duke's series Clark and Micheal as an audition director.

Bully

1. When Cece is in her car on the phone to Schmitt, you can clearly see the Home Screen lit up on her display. The version of iOS didn't allow that when this was made, it would've shown the Call screen.

Injured

1. Nick talks twice about a Fredo kiss throughout the episode. This is a reference to The Godfather II, where Michael kisses his brother Fredo on the mouth.

Control

1. When Winston says "where's the money dude?" Is a reference to the Coen Brother's film, The Big Lebowski

Fancyman Part 1

1. The director of this episode, Peyton Reed, is known for directing Marvel films, Ant-Man (2015) and its sequel Ant-Man and the Wasp (2018).
2. Schmidt tells Winston that "nor was Crispin Glover the first man to die in the Revolutionary War." This was actually a sailor named Crispus Attucks. He was the first Bostonian to die at the Boston Massacre.

Fancyman Part 2

1. In this episode, Schmidt refers to the movie Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle (2004). Jake Johnson plays Jesus in the movie's sequel A Very Harold & Kumar Christmas (2011).
2. Martin Starr, who is a guest actor in this episode is a regular on the show "Party Down", just like another guest star, Lizzy Caplan.

Secrets

1. The 10k runner who exclaims "I'm peeing!" Is the director of the episode (as well as movies such as Wet Hot American Summer and Role Models) David Wain.
2. You can see the yellow shirt "I am Claire", seen in earlier episodes
3. Nick breaks the phone which he had received in the previous episode where he says he is a person without a phone
4. When Winston is scolding everyone in the apartment when he does his "Theodore K Mullens" character, you can see one of Nick's girlfriend break character and start to laugh.
5. Bear Hunt: Nick yells Bears when Schmidt is teaching him how to talk to girls and he asks him what happened to his phone.

Normal

1. This is the first episode to mention and show the game "True American."

Kids

1. Jess (Zooey Deschanel) refers to the film "Bridge to Terabithia" which she starred in herself.
2. Jess tells Nick that he may as be called the book Bridge to Terabithia because he makes children cry. Zooey Deschanel starred in the 2007 movie adaptation of Bridge to Terabithia where she also plays a teacher.

Tomatoes

Backslide

1. In the scene playing over the closing credits, Past Nick says to Future Nick, "Be nicer to Coach, or he's gonna take off, live with a bunch of other white people." Damon Wayans Jr., who played Coach in the pilot episode, left 'New Girl' for a co-starring role in the show Happy Endings (2011), where he is the only black character.
2. Paul says "I messed up big time" to Jess. Earlier in the season Jess pretends she made a play called "Big Time" to cover up her being heard by everyone talking to Nick saying "I wanna sleep with him (Paul) big time!"
3. Jess wonders to herself if she is secretly a cylon. This is a reference to Battlestar Galactica where robots can look exactly like humans, five characters of which have no idea they are robots living among humans.

See Ya

1. Winston's bedroom wall is now adorned with a gigantic version of the "sexually-charged zero-G tea ceremony" mural that Schmidt had originally commissioned for the back wall of his closet from an artist identified only as 'Gian Carlo', as previously stated in New Girl: The Landlord (2012). In real life, the mural was actually created by Los Angeles-based artist David Larks, who also produced many T-shirts, book covers, paintings and murals for the show.
2. White Fang is never sent away for his own good in the book, only in the movie. This implies that Schmidt may have the book on his kindle, but has only ever seen the movie.
