She-Hulk: Attorney at Law

TV Series (2022)

Season 1

Table of Contents

A Normal Amount of Rage

S01E01 Episode aired Aug 18, 2022
  1. When Jennifer Walters walks into the bar after her first "hulk-out," there's a QR code in a poster on the wall. If you scan this and follow the link, it takes you to a webpage showing the first She-Hulk comic, 'The Savage She-Hulk' from February 1980.
  2. After Jennifer finished practising her closing statement in the opening scene, Nikki tells her that she just needs to top it off with a "savage Jen Walters look". When the character was first introduced in the comics in 1980, she was referred to as "The Savage She-Hulk".
  3. In a rare TV nod to reality, the jury box is shown to contain 14 jurors; 12 members, and 2 alternates, as often happens IRL.
  4. A scrapped-up helmet of an Iron Legion suit from Iron Man Three (2013) can be seen among the items on display at Bruce's residence.
  5. For a catapulted rock to escape Earth's gravity, its initial velocity must be at least 11 km/s ignoring air resistance. However, at that speed it will get pulverized and burn up, because of the air resistance.
  6. During the bar scene, Bruce mentions that he and Jen can't get drunk because of their enhanced metabolism. This is exactly what Steve Rogers said to Peggy Carter in Captain America: The First Avenger (2011); further MCU lore establishes that the Hulk was created from Banner experimenting with the Super-Soldier Serum.
  7. Jennifer Walters becomes She-Hulk thanks to Bruce accidentally bleeding on her, replicating what happens to Samuel Sterns in The Incredible Hulk (2008).In the comics, Bruce willingly gave Jennifer a transfusion of his blood to save her from an attack by gangsters.
  8. When Titania breaks into the court, Jennifer turns into the She-Hulk and easily overpowers her, knocking her out with one punch. In the comics, Titania is much stronger than She-Hulk.

Superhuman Law

S01E02 Episode aired Aug 25, 2022
  1. Bruce Banner (Mark Ruffalo) says he was "literally a different person" when he last fought Emil Blonsky. That fight occurred in The Incredible Hulk (2008), where Banner really was a different person (being played by Edward Norton, whom Ruffalo later succeeded).
  2. A news website Jennifer visits has two headlines: "Why there is a giant statue of a man sticking out of the ocean." This refers to the events of Eternals (2021), where the Celestial being Tiamut emerged from the ocean."Man fights with metal claws in bar brawl." This refers to the metal-clawed mutant Wolverine, who debuted in the Hulk comics in 1974 as an adversary (he later appeared in the X-Men comics in 1975).
  3. Jennifer's phone lock screen is a picture of the backside of Captain America, continuing a running gag from the previous episode.
  4. Jennifer is hired by the GLK&H firm. The letters stands for Goodman, Leiber, Kurtzberg and Holloway. The first three names refer to the Marvel Comics founders: publisher Martin Goodman, and writer and artist Stan Lee and Jack Kirby (who were born Lieber and Kurtzberg).
  5. There is a QR code leading to a free She-Hulk comic. It can be found at the top of the page on the digital viewer Jen is reading, which offers "10 Offbeat Jobs for a Fresh Start".
  6. The ship that Bruce is on, the same ship that caused the car wreck in the pilot, is a Sakaaran ship from the alien world where Bruce lived for a time as the Hulk and participated in gladiator-style fights in Thor: Ragnarok (2017).
  7. The scene of the guard giving the rules to Jennifer for her audience with Blonsky is very similar to the scene in The Silence of the Lambs (1991) when Clarice's first visit to Dr. Hannibal Lecter. Jennifer also makes a reference to the "fava beans and Chianti" dialogue made by Lecter in the movie.
  8. The webpage Jen is looking at features an ad to buy "Iron Man Three" sneakers.
  9. The exterior (and some interiors) for GLK&H's offices are the High Museum of Art in Atlanta, which was also used as the exterior for the prison where Hannibal Lecter (Lecktor) was held in Michael Mann's Manhunter, which adds a slight extra twist to Jen's "FAVA beans and a nice Chianti" joke later in the episode.
  10. During the bar scene, an episode of "Ally McBeal" (another comedy show involving a female attorney) can be seen on the TV in the background.
  11. Abomination is said to be at a fight club, referring to the movie of the same name. Edward Norton stars in Fight Club and was the Hulk when he fought Abomination.
  12. Although it may not be easy to recognize him after 36 years, the role of Jessica's father is played by Mark Linn-Baker, who starred as "Larry Appleton," one of the two young roommates (along with Bronson Pinchot as "Balki") on the hit '80s sitcom "Perfect Strangers".
  13. The final scene includes a news item about Emil Blonsky appearing in an underground fight club as the Abomination. This had happened in Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings (2021) at the fight club in Macau.
  14. In this episode, Jen is offered a job by the very lawyer who got her fired but only if she will appear in her She-Hulk form. In the comics, GLK&H do hire Jen but only if she will appear as Jen rather than She-Hulk.

The People vs. Emil Blonsky

S01E03 Episode aired Sep 1, 2022
  1. The Wrecking Crew wield Asgardian construction technology, which came from the construction of New Asgard in Avengers: Endgame (2019).In the comics, the Wrecking Crew's equipment was made on Earth but enchanted by Loki.
  2. Jennifer Walters is confronted with the rumor that she got her powers from a Mob murder attempt on her. In the original comic book series, this was indirectly how Walters got her Hulk condition. Namely, mob hitmen wounded her in an attack and her cousin, Bruce Banner aka The Hulk was forced to give her a transfusion of his own blood into her to keep her alive, which produced a milder version of his Hulk condition in her.

Is This Not Real Magic?

S01E04 Episode aired Sep 8, 2022
  1. Jen's date is shown reading "Bad Feminism" by Roxanne Gay, who also wrote several issues of 'Black Panther' for Marvel Comics.
  2. According to Kat Coiro, when she brought Patty Guggenheim up during a meeting with Marvel executives, they weren't familiar with her. Coiro recalled that when Guggenheim was auditioning, the executives and the showrunners loved her performance and were crying with laughter.
  3. The name Donny Blaze is a play on the alter ego of the first Ghost Rider, Johnny Blaze. Given that Donny Blaze is misappropriating real magic, it's likely that Johnny Blaze exists in the MCU and Donny is misleading his audience into thinking he's related to Blaze, who would be known to the public as a daredevil stuntman. Which in turn foreshadows the plot twist of Titania suing Jennifer for trademark infringement over the use of the name She-Hulk.
  4. Rhys Coiro, who plays Donnie Blaze, is married to the episode's director Kat Coiro.
  5. The character Madisynn became so popular among fans that a cult-following around her started immediately. In fact, fans were expecting that she would make another appearance in the show, which didn't happen. According to writer and producer Jessica Gao, it was only after Patty Guggenheim was cast that they knew they had a breakout character on their hands. Gao also said that if she had known Guggenheim from the very beginning, she definitely would've written her into more episodes.
  6. This episode contains numerous spoilers for the HBO series 'The Sopranos.'
  7. The mid-credit scene with Madisynn and Wong was not scripted. Kat Coiro decided to let the cameras roll and let Patty Guggenheim and Benedict Wong improvise their dialogue.

Mean, Green, and Straight Poured into These Jeans

S01E05 Episode aired Sep 15, 2022
  1. The plot of this episode is Jennifer Walters being sued by Titania for trademark infringement. In real life, the She-Hulk character was created by Marvel Comics precisely to preempt this legal situation with the producers of the The Incredible Hulk (1977) television series. The creators of the series were rumored to be considering creating a female version of the Hulk, which would have been owned by them rather than by Marvel.
  2. Perhaps more than a mild coincidence, the type of beauty care products that Titania promotes share similarities with the "goop" products of Iron Man (2008) actress Gwyneth Paltrow. Criticism has been leveled at Paltrow's products, some of which compared to snake oil as Jennifer notes of Titania's in the episode.
  3. The first episode to not include a mid-credits scene.
  4. In the Avongers and Avingers t-shirts the character of Hulk is represented in purple color instead of his characteristic green. In color theory purple is the opposite to green. This could also be a nod to the character of Krunk from The Justice Friend cartoon from Cartoon Network's Dexter's Laboratory.
  5. At the end of this episode there is a hint at Daredevil appearing in the show at a future date.

Just Jen

S01E06 Episode aired Sep 22, 2022

    The Retreat

    S01E07 Episode aired Sep 29, 2022
    1. Jen's car is picked up by Slott's Towing. Dan Slott was a writer on the She-Hulk comic.
    2. The first acting credit for Jordan Aaron Ford.

    Ribbit and Rip It

    S01E08 Episode aired Oct 6, 2022
    1. The sound effect of Leapfrog's jet boots breaking down is the same sound effect of the Millennium Falcon breaking down from Star Wars: Episode V - The Empire Strikes Back (1980).
    2. In the comics Vincent Patilio is the villain Leapfrog whose suit gives him strength and the ability to jump long distances. He was twice captured by Daredevil, ending his career.
    3. When She-Hulk asks Daredevil if he's a superhero, the theme music from the Marvel Netflix series Daredevil (2015) plays and then Matt says, "I'm Daredevil."
    4. Second appearance of Matt Murdock in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) after Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021). Charlie Cox returns as the titular character from Marvel Netflix's Daredevil (2015-2018) with this appearance marking his first in costume appearance as Daredevil in the MCU. However, unlike the Marvel Netflix series, Daredevil's costume matches his yellow and red appearance from the 1964 comics rather than his all red appearance from the comics and Marvel Netlfix show.
    5. In Leap Frog's hideout there are two arcade cabinets, one is the classic Frogger and the other is called Leapfrogger which is a fictional game based on the character from the episode. A representation of his mask can be seen in the main screen.
    6. A billboard for Rogers: the Musical can be seen behind Daredevil in the scene where he and Jen are standing in the parking lot after their fight. Rogers: the Musical was first seen in Hawkeye (2021), which featured Vincent D'Onofrio as Wilson FIsk/Kingpin reprising his role from Netflix's Daredevil (2015).
    7. Towards the end of the episode, When Nikki comes in the help Jen get ready for the Award ceremony, she holds the makeup brushes between her fingers. This could be a reference to Wolverine and possibly foreshadowing.
    8. Charlie Cox returns as Daredevil. The character's first appearance outside of the comic was also in a Hulk film, The Trial of the Incredible Hulk. That was based on the television series The Incredible Hulk. The producers of that series gave David Banner a sister who they considered turning into a new Hulk character that Universal Pictures could own the rights to. It was to prevent this that Marvel created She-Hulk.
    9. This episode recreates the iconic Daredevil hallway fight scene from Daredevil (2015). However, it is far less violent and shorter.
    10. A sextape between Jen and Josh is shown in the episode, making She-Hulk: Attorney at Law (2022) the first MCU TV show and the fourth overall MCU installment following Iron Man (2008), The Incredible Hulk (2008) and Eternals (2021) to feature a sex scene.

    Whose Show Is This?

    S01E09 Episode aired Oct 13, 2022
    1. When Jennifer scrolls through her text messaging app, one text message from Grant reads: "A full commitment's what I'm thinking of. You wouldn't get this from any other guy". These are lyrics from Rick Astley's song "Never Gonna Give You Up".
    2. The beginning of the episode is a recreation of the Kenneth Johnson 1978 Incredible Hulk series, including Tatiana Maslany stating the famous Bill Bixby line, " Don't make me angry, you wouldn't like me when I'm angry."
    3. Jen's room is decorated with posters from several legal themed movies including Legally Blonde.
    4. This episode marks the first time that Matt Murdock/Daredevil and the Hulk appear together in live-action since The Trial of the Incredible Hulk (1989).
    5. Jen's room has an Erin Brockovich (2000) poster on the wall. As of 2022, Captain Marvel actress Brie Larson is developing the TV series Lessons in Chemistry (2023) with Susannah Grant, the writer of the film. Grant will be serving as showrunner in the series.
    6. Three of the writers that She-Hulk confront in the writer's room of Marvel Studios are actually writers in the series: Jessica Gao, Zeb Wells, Cody Ziglar.
    7. The robot K.E.V.I.N. is a reference to Marvel Studios head Kevin Fiege.
    8. There are 4 Hulks and 1 Abomination in this episode.
    9. She-Hulk jumping from her show into Marvel Studios: Assembled (2021) by crossing the Disney+ screen is similar to how the Marvel character Gwenpool can jump between panels of her comic. Since it is rumored that Gwenpool may be introduced in Deadpool 3 (2024), this may have been done as a test of how her fourth-wall-manipulation powers might be adjusted to work in a film/television environment.
    10. The way the K.E.V.I.N. AI system is portrayed is very similar to the "murderous" AI GLaDOS from the Portal video games. His name is an obvious reference to Kevin Feige, president of Marvel Studios.
    11. The ending of the episode mirrors the endings of the Fast & Furious movies. Usually some movies of the franchise end with the characters having brunch.
