- First episode that establishes overtly that the Eppes family is Jewish.
- The canister of gas used in the beginning of the episode by the robbers had CS printed on it. CS gas is a weaker version of tear gas and is used in the military for training to give soldiers the experience of tear gas.
- Guest star Tim DeKay (bank manager Peter Friscia) later starred in White Collar, in which he played a dedicated, by-the-book FBI agent (also named Peter) paired up with a crook suspected of many more crimes than the FBI could prove, including bank heists. At least one episode centered on bank heists and there was coincidentally also one in which krugerrands played a large part; in fact this episode in total was very much up the White Collar alley. Additionally, one of his co-stars on that show, Sharif Atkins, guest-starred on the previous episode and one of the stars of Numb3rs, Diane Farr (Megan Reeves), later guest-starred on White Collar.

- The Wexfords' front door is briefly visible at the start of the episode, and a Mezuzah is clearly visible on the doorframe. A Mezuzah is a small case containing a passage from the Torah (Deuteronomy 6:4-9), which Jews traditionally affix to the door frames of their houses as a constant reminder of God's presence; it also serves as a sign that the residents of that house are Jewish.
- The cover of Charlie's book "The Attraction Equation" which is about an equation for friendship and attraction, is similar to the cover of John Green's "An Abundance of Katherines" which is about a teenager who tries to come up with an equation for relationships.

- The coordinates for the dam where Colby Granger (Dylan Bruno), Amita Ramanujan (Navi Rawat), and Charlie Eppes (David Krumholtz) go are are N34.1114° W118.2902°
- The first victim in the opening scene, and the scene where Amita, Charlie, and agent Colby go to the dam are somewhat reminiscent of geocaching, an activity where people using portable GPS to find hidden trinkets, but in geocaching, there is no online game play involved. - There is an hour glass in Charlie's office that you see in other episodes. It is the same every time. The sand dowe not move and they don't flip it.

- The plot of this episode closely resembles the true events of Patricia Hearst, a socialite and heiress, who was kidnapped in 1974 by a radical group. The group initially demanded a ransom in the form of food money for the needy in California, much like the demands of the fictional group in this episode who displayed similar altruistic beliefs, from their hostage's father, and again, like the fictional Ella Pierce, Patty Hearst eventually turned against her father and joined the group's cause as seen in her later participation in a bank robbery with the group.

- Guest star Christopher Lloyd and regular cast member Judd Hirsch costarred together on the very popular sitcom Taxi (1978). Their conversation towards the end of this episode makes reference to Lloyd's character from "Taxi," Reverend Jim "Iggy" Ignatowski, who was an aging hippie.
- The character name of "Ross Moore" is a combination of the names of comic artist Alex Ross and comic writer Alan Moore.
- Fittingly (for the comic book theme of the episode), two of this episode's guest stars are best-known for their participation in very popular science fiction franchises: Wil Wheaton (Miles Sklar) played Wesley Crusher on Star Trek: The Next Generation (1987), and Christopher Lloyd (Ross Moore) played Emmett "Doc" Brown in all three Back to the Future (1985) movies.
- In one of the scenes on the convention floor, Dr. Larry Fleinhardt is shown having purchased several pieces of comic memorabilia, most notably a "Fone Bone" plush doll from the independent comic series "Bone" by Jeff Smith.

- Enrico Colantoni, who plays the hostage taker in this episode, began playing the regular role of a hostage negotiator on Flashpoint (2008), which was also broadcast in the USA by CBS.
- Ben's workspace, as visited by agents Warner and Reeves, is highly reminiscent of that of Harry Caul (played by Gene Hackman) in the 1974 movie The Conversation, also about a paranoid wiretapper/surveillor.
