It's predominantly an homage to Donald Fagen, one half of the great musical duo Steely Dan as well as a brilliant solo artist.

Lord of the Pi's

S03E08 Episode aired 21 November 2006
  1. The character of Selma Hearst Rose is played by real-life Hearst family heiress Patricia Hearst. Although in the show, the source of the fictionalized "Hearst" family's fortune is a chain of retail stores instead of the publishing empire owned by Patty Hearst's grandfather William Randolph Hearst, this episode contains several references to the real Hearst and her family history. Selma asks Keith Mars if he knows how it feels to be at the center of a national scandal, just as Patty was during her kidnapping, brainwashing, and crimes. Selma's husband is named Budd Rose, a reversal of the key phrase from Citizen Kane (1941) (based on William Randolph Hearst's life). And Patty Hearst's character being named "Selma" is even an oblique reference to her own name, "Patty," since "Patty and Selma" are the names of Marge's two constantly paired sisters on The Simpsons (1989) (Veronica also mentions Simpsons characters Mr. Burns and Smithers during this episode).
  2. After jumping the wall at the Hearst Mansion, Veronica (Kristen Bell) makes a sound effect reminiscent of The Bionic Woman (1976).
  3. Veronica's (Kristen Bell) line "She always gets the replay, never tilts at all" is a reference to a near identical line in The Who's song "Pinball Wizard".
  4. A same sex kiss was originally planned to happen between Selma (Patricia Hearst and Hallie (Keri Lynn Pratt), but The CW would not allow it and provided no explanation. Controversy rose since both UPN and The WB, when they were separate networks, allowed same sex kissing. A possible theory raised was that it was due to the differences in the characters' ages.
  5. When Veronica (Kristen Bell) described her father and herself as "Ryan" and "Tatum" she's referring to Ryan O'Neal and Tatum O'Neal.
  6. The episode title is a reference to the novel Lord of the Flies and the Pi Sigma fraternity.
  7. The wheelchair-bound Budd (Charles Shaughnessy) having a servant named Brandt is one of several references the series has made to The Big Lebowski (1998).
  8. In reference to Patricia Hearst's guest appearance as Selma, creator Rob Thomas said, "She is playing a character close to herself. She's playing the granddaughter of Hearst College's founder, who in our world is a railroad baron rather than a publishing baron. It'll be similar, but she is not literally playing Patty Hearst."
  9. In "Lord of the Pi's" there are clear references to "The Big Lebowski." The scenes of Keith looking at the awards on the wall, being told by the assistant not to touch them, and being led to a room to talk to a wheelchair-bound man about his missing wife closely mirror the movie. Veronica is clearly a fan of "The Big Lebowski," since she quotes it often throughout the series.
  10. This episode had a viewership of approximately 2.57 million viewers when it first aired. It was the lowest rated episode of the season to date.
  11. Veronica's comment through the gates, "The park is closed. The walrus out front should have told you." is a reference to the movie "Vacation" with Chevy Chase.
  12. Ed Begley Jr. (Cyrus O'Dell) also appeared on Party Down (2009), in episode 1.3, Party Down: Pepper McMasters Singles Seminar (2009), of Party Down (2009) as Bruce Nesbitt. Both shows are the creation of Rob Thomas.
  13. Patricia Hearst's guest appearance in this previous episode, along with the guard-prisoner experiment and Moe's (Andrew McClain) remark about "it changes you" in the next episode, was a reference to Stockholm syndrome.

Britt): "My boyfriend just fled the country with his dead ex-girlfriend's baby. I need a project."

Although Wallace's response is a continuation of the The Wizard of Oz (1939) theme of the interchange, it is also a reference to the fact that "Friend of Dorothy" is a mid-twentieth-century euphemism for a gay person.
