Season 1

Table of Contents

Pilot

S01E01 Episode aired 22 September 2004

  2. The music box Veronica's (Kristen Bell) mom leaves plays a variation of The Beatles' "All You Need Is Love".
  3. The pilot script describes Veronica (Kristen Bell) the following way: "She is not cute. She is sexy. Tough. Prematurely jaded. Angelina Jolie at 17."
  4. The character Piz (Chris Lowell) in season three is named after the director of the pilot episode of Veronica Mars (2004), Mark Piznarski.
  5. Veronica's (Kristen Bell) dog in this pilot is different from the one seen in the series. This one is a brown and white American Bulldog, while the later one is a brown American Pit Bull Terrier. When the show got picked up, they decided to recast Backup. This was done to avoid dealing with Backup One's dog trainer, as their lack of preparation for the pilot shoots delayed production a lot.
  6. Amanda Noret, who plays Madison Sinclair, and the girl who plays Shelly Pomroy (Melissa Hoover) (who is not a working actress but has appeared in over eleven episodes), are cousins in real life.
  7. In the scene where Eli "Weevil" Navarro (Francis Capra) is hitting Logan Echolls (Jason Dohring), Weevil says " say you're sorry" and Logan's response is "go rub a lamp". This is probably an inside joke about Francis Capra as he started alongside Shaquille O'Neal in the movie Kazaam (1996), where Shaq played a genie.
  8. The word "snitch" written on the duct tape on Wallace's (Percy Daggs III) chest was actually misspelled--it read "snich." According to the pilot script posted on creator Rob Thomas' website, this mistake is intentional.

  14. Veronica's (Kristen Bell) Le Baron plates are 6BLA504.
  15. The scene during which Veronica (Kristen Bell) wakes up after being raped was longer and more graphic, and was edited down by the censors.
  16. In the original pilot, Lilly's (Amanda Seyfried) body was dumped into a river and found later. The network found this a little too disturbing, especially because it involved Jake Kane (Kyle Secor) disposing of his own daughter's body and had her body be left on the Kane property.
  17. Cliff's (Daran Norris) client, Ameenah Kaplan, who Veronica (Kristen Bell) helped out by exposing the shady way the strip joint keeps their liquor license, returns in episode 1.20, Veronica Mars: M.A.D. (2005).

This is Gene Wilder's line when describing the residents of Rock Ridge, where the line finishes, "you know......morons" Duncan's reply is "Every one"

  1. Adam Kaufman plays André in this episode. In an attempt to keep the struggling show on the air after its third season, creator Rob Thomas filmed an extended pitch for the fourth season that advances the show's timeline considerably. Instead of being a college undergraduate, as she was at the end of season three, in the spec season four, Veronica has graduated from college and the FBI Academy and is starting her first day as a FBI agent. Although the pitch contained (except for Veronica) a whole new cast of heretofore unseen characters (and therefore actors), one of the new characters was a fellow FBI agent played by Adam Kaufman. This was a completely different character from the one-off appearance he made in this episode.

  10. Mac (Tina Majorino) finds that she has been switched at birth with Madison Sinclair (Amanda Noret). Ironically, Katie Leclerc, playing the small role of Crystal, is well known for then going on to play a deaf girl who was accidentally switched at birth as a baby in a hospital, in Switched at Birth (2011).
  11. When Sheriff Lamb (Michael Muhney) and the mayor (Jeff Rector) come to Keith Mars (Enrico Colantoni) office to ask him for help Veronica (Kristen Bell) says "Deputy Lamb is here" not Sheriff.
  12. Here, it's revealed that Madison Sinclair (Amanda Noret) and Cindy "Mac" MacKenzie (Tina Majorino) were switched at birth. Swapping the girls' last names makes their full names alliterative (Madison MacKenzie and Cindy Sinclair).

  6. When the students sing part of "Don't Stand So Close to Me" by The Police, they skip 10 lines after "Knows what she wants to be". This includes the chorus and "Her friends are so jealous / You know how bad girls get", which would have the opposite effect from what they wanted.
  7. Adam Scott (Chuck Rooks) also appeared in Party Down (2009) as Henry Pollard. Rob Thomas created both shows.
  8. All three of the primary "players" in the main plot - the teacher, Mr. Rooks (Adam Scott), the accuser, Carrie Bishop (Leighton Meester), and the student who is ultimately revealed as Mr. Rooks' real victim, Susan Knight (Christine Lakin) - are named after chess pieces.
  9. Considering that characters Carrie Bishop and Susan Knight only appeared in this episode of the series (and in the case of Bishop, very briefly in one other episode), the events of and characters introduced in this episode ended up having an outsized effect on the plot of the 2014 movie.

Weapons of Class Destruction

S01E18 Episode aired 12 April 2005

  2. The whereabouts of journalism teacher Mallory Dent are finally revealed. She is on maternity leave. In real-life, Sydney Tamiia Poitier, who plays Dent, left the show when she was pregnant.
  3. The title of the episode is both word-play on WMDs and is a reference to a class based interpretation of society as found in Marxist theory. 'Class destruction' could either refer to a vision of liberal institutionalisation whereby class boundaries have disappeared in all but the interpretations of the ruling class or the destruction of one of more of the class schisms, possibly leading to destruction of class through communism.

Duncan) had planted so it is very bizarre to see it back in one piece on her desk.
  6. This episode features Jonathan Taylor Thomas, marking the second actor from "Home Improvement" to be featured on the show. Previously, Zachery Ty Bryan had appeared in a recurring role as Caz Truman. The actors played brothers on the long-running sitcom.

Rob Thomas created Cupid, Party Down and iZombie, as well as Veronica Mars.

M.A.D.

S01E20 Episode aired 26 April 2005
  1. Veronica's (Kristen Bell) threat to tell Tad's Naval Academy classmates that Tad (Jeff D'Agostino) is gay (even though he is not) is a potent one because at the time the episode was filmed and aired, the US Military's policy commonly known as "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" that prohibited any non-heterosexual military member from revealing his or her sexual orientation was still in place. That policy was in effect between 1993 and 2011, and was a replacement for the previous policy on the matter, which was a total ban on all homosexual service people.
  2. This episode's title, "M.A.D.," refers to the military doctrine of "mutually assured destruction," in which it is assumed that neither one of two heavily armed military enemies (usually nuclear superpowers) will dare to attack the other first because both possess such large stockpiles of deadly weapons that there is no scenario in which a war between them would not spell destruction for them both. The doctrine was best known during the Cold War era, when military strategists hoped that it would prevent nuclear war between the US and Russia (or Russia's allies).
  3. This episode marks the first appearance of Cassidy "Beaver" Casablancas, played by Kyle Gallner.
  4. When Veronica (Kristen Bell) calls Cliff (Daran Norris) to ask him about the newspaper ad, he's with his client Loretta Cancun (Ameenah Kaplan). This is the same client mentioned in the pilot episode, Veronica Mars: Pilot (2004), that Veronica helped by exposing the shady way the strip joint keeps their liquor license.
  5. Among the awards in the Echolls's house are Oscars and People Choice Awards
  6. Logan (Jason Dohring) mentions that the club at which his father's boat is docked is called The Albacore Club. That name, and the flag with the club logo that is seen briefly in the episode, are both references to the club with the same name and logo in Chinatown (1974), and is thereby also a reference to that film's incest revelations (similar to the question throughout Veronica Mars's first season about whether or not ex-couple Duncan (Teddy Dunn) and Veronica (Kristen Bell) are really half-siblings).
