This is in contrast to the storyline of Season 6 Episode 16, "Manger and Salesman", in which Michael and Jim compete for the position of salesmen rather than manager, due to the fact that Sabre has no commission cap on sales. It is heavily implied that in that episode that Dunder Mifflin previously had commission caps. 1. Kaling purposely made Dwight "complicated" and "mean" in the script; she wanted to avoid a situation wherein Jim and Dwight become best friends, calling it something that would happen in a "crappy sitcom feel-good formula." She wanted to stress the fact that "Jim and Dwight are not friends. Kaling specifically wrote Jim to be "off-guard and surprised" in the episode, because she reasoned that "perfect isn't always nearly as fun to play or watch as flawed."
    2. When Jim refuses to let go of Dwight's hand while shaking, you can see and hear Stanley laughing in the background.
    3. According to Kaling, the group had to pretend like it was cold during the outdoor scenes when it was actually warm.
    4. The snow that was used for the snowballs was artificial, and did not cooperate well. According to Kaling, the snowballs would "'explode' before they made contact".
    5. The snowmen featured at the end of the episode took a day to construct. In addition, the artificial snow had to be maintained, and footprints had to "be tracked constantly" to maintain continuity. The snowmen were crafted out of 100 tons of chipped ice, and the show's special effects team created molds and hand-crafted the creations. The scenes featuring the snowmen were shot on the hottest day of the episode's shoot in Los Angeles, with temperatures reaching above 90 degrees Fahrenheit. The entire crew was outfitted UV-protectant glasses because "snow-blindness was a real possibility."To prevent heat-related injuries, an on-set medic monitored the staff and crew; anyone who was slated to appear outside was "slathered in sunscreen" and kept inside until "moments" before each shot.

Paul Lieberstein wrote "The Client" and he and the other writers, and Carell in particular, wanted to return to the film idea and present it inside of a regular episode (an early plan to simply show the uninterrupted film as a special episode was nixed). When Carell's time on the show was near the end, the idea was brought up and Lieberstein assigned it to BJ Novak to write.
      2. Steve Carell used to actually play hockey in high school.
      3. One of the very few episodes in which the cold open is directly related to the rest of the plot.

A video plays showing Danny at his home, but then Michael shows up to give him the Dundie, revealing it's not actually live.
