Gay Witch Hunt

S03E01 Episode aired 21 September 2006
  1. The kiss between Michael and Oscar in the conference room was not scripted. The scene had been shot a couple of times with Steve Carell not kissing Oscar Nunez. Then on one take, Oscar saw "[Carell's] lips coming closer and closer". Nunez recalled "I'm like, 'Dear God, he's going to kiss me.' And sure enough, he planted one on my face." The other cast members were laughing during the kiss but because the camera stay focused on Carell and Nunez, the scene was still usable.
  2. It won an Emmy Award for Outstanding Writing for a Comedy Series.
  3. First appearance of Andy Bernard (Ed Helms).
  4. The exterior shot of the Stamford Branch was formerly the office location for the company Starwood, and is directly across the water from NBC Sports in Stamford, CT. NBC is the network that aired The Office.

The Convention

S03E02 Episode aired 28 September 2006
  1. Greg Daniels wanted to get Mackenzie Crook, Martin Freeman, and Lucy Davis from the original British Office series to appear in the episode as their respective characters (Gareth Keenan, Tim Canterbury, and Dawn Tinsley), but was unsuccessful due to scheduling conflicts.
  2. Jim walks into Dwight's room and Angela is naked on the bed and says,"D?" Jim mistakes her for a hooker and leaves the room in a hurry. Angela was seen checking into the hotel earlier under the name Jane Doe.

The Coup

S03E03 Episode aired 5 October 2006
  1. In preparation, Rashida Jones "took some serious Call of Duty" lessons from the writers, as they all play the online game.
  2. When Dwight and Jan are eating lunch at the diner you can see Jan start breaking character and laughing but quickly covers it up with her coffee cup.
  3. Pam tells the viewers that Michael made the office watch an episode of Entourage six times. Rainn Wilson, who plays Dwight, guest stars in one episode of Entourage.

Grief Counseling

S03E04 Episode aired 12 October 2006
  1. The first cut of this episode lasted 45 minutes.
  2. When Michael calls for a grief counseling circle in the conference room, Pam describes the movie "Million Dollar Baby," Ryan describes "The Lion King," and Kevin describes "Weekend at Bernie's."
  3. In this episode, the Stamford office discusses the order for "Fairfield County Schools." However, Connecticut schools are not run by counties but rather by individual town and regional districts, meaning Fairfield County wouldn't be the ones placing a paper order.
  4. This episode was filmed after the fifth episode, "Initiation".
  5. Dwight says his grandfather was reburied in an old oil drum. This must be the same grandfather whose tux he inherited.
  6. During the bird funeral, the cast wore coats despite the hot summer weather.

Initiation

S03E05 Episode aired 19 October 2006
  1. Pam tells Jim that she types 90 words per minutes. Having worked as a receptionist at several jobs, Jenna Fischer types 85 words per minute.
  2. Although the idea for writer Michael Schur to be Dwight's cousin Mose had been a joke among the writers since the first season, B. J. Novak pitched the idea when writing "Initiation". Schur had to grow out his beard for three months and wear wool clothes on a hot day as part of his character. Mose was based on an actual participant in the UPN reality show Amish in the City.
  3. When Ryan catches up to Dwight outside the Schrute Farm's barn, Dwight gives him a salute with an extended flourish. That salute is a reverse version of the "Rimmer Salute" from Red Dwarf (1988).
  4. Even though this episode aired after the fourth episode, "Grief Counseling", its filming took place before that episode due to the availability of shooting on Dwight's fictional beet farm.

Diwali

S03E06 Episode aired 2 November 2006
  1. Roles of Kelly's parents were played by Mindy Kaling's real life parents.
  2. On Jim's desk, you can see a plaque the reads, "Jim Halpert Asst. Regional Manager." The position thought to have been made up by Dwight.
  3. One of two times Jim is drunk at work.
  4. The song that Jim and Andy sing together as they drink at work is "Closer To Fine" by The Indigo Girls.
  5. In this episode Michael proposes to Carol to no avail. However Carol is played by Steve Carell's wife, Nancy.

Branch Closing

S03E07 Episode aired 9 November 2006
  1. Gary Trendel, the guy who calls Meredith about their pact, is voiced by Paul Lieberstein who also stars as Toby Flenderson.
  2. Michael Scott's ringtone for his cell phone is the tune of "My Humps" by The Black Eyed Peas.
  3. When the final get-together for the employees is being planned, the restaurants mentioned are all fictional except for Cooper's. Cooper's was voted the area's best seafood restaurant and was also visited by Brian Baumgartner (Kevin) and Angela Kinsey (Angela) in 2006. Cooper's is located at 701 N. Washington Ave in Scranton.
  4. When they think the branch is closing, Meredith tells Michael that she knows he's seeing someone, but she's still willing to sleep with him. When Michael's affair with Donna is revealed, she is adamant that she's never "cheated on or been used to cheat with."
  5. When Meredith answers the phone after Creed says how much he made from selling company computers, she clearly says, "Deremith Palmer."

The Merger

S03E08 Episode aired 16 November 2006
  1. Michael meets Rashida Jones' character for the first time and awkwardly comments, "Oh, you're exotic looking, was your father a G.I.?" (Jones is biracial.) Years later, life would imitate art when TNT correspondent Danielle Demski interviewed Jones on the red carpet at the 2015 SAG awards. The reporter commented to Jones that she looked "very tan" adding, "You look like you've just come off an island or something. You're very tan. Very tropical." Not wishing to embarrass Demski, Jones graciously accepted the compliment, but pointed out she was "ethnic".
  2. Dwight is wearing a Rock 107 t-shirt in his and Michael's music video "Lazy Scranton". Rock 107 is a local classic rock station for the area.
  3. In the epilogue scene, Dwight mentions to Andy that his car is an '87 Pontiac Trans Am. However, in the pilot episode, Dwight brags to the new hire, Ryan Howard, that he drives a '78 (Datsun) 280Z
  4. Dwight claims to know a lot about animals and nature through out the series. Yet in this episode says he "outran" a black pepper snake. Which is not only commonly docile but is also nonvenomus.
  5. During part of Michaels Integration Celebration he & Andy are singing and dancing to "What Is Love". This is a reference to Night At The Roxbury which stars Will Ferrell, who is hired at Dunder Mifflin in season 7.

The Convict

S03E09 Episode aired 30 November 2006
  1. Two sets of twins were on set to play the child of Hannah Smotridge-Barr.
  2. After the employees come in from the outdoors, on the TV is a weather report from WBRE, the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre NBC affiliate. The snowy weather broadcast appears to be WBRE meteorologist Josh Hodell.

A Benihana Christmas

S03E10 Episode aired 14 December 2006
  1. In order to get permission to use the song "Your Body is a Wonderland" in this episode, John Mayer asked that he be given a Dundie.
  2. In this episode, Creed is singing "Spinnin N' Reelin", a song that he wrote himself. Creed Bratton is a musician as well as an actor, and has released some albums.
  3. Angela sings "Little Drummer Boy" on the karaoke machine, which is her favorite song. In the pilot episode, Dwight is seen singing that song.
  4. This episode is the first double-length episode of the series. In The Netherlands, it was aired as two separate episodes.
  5. Carol (Nancy Walls), Michaels (Steve Carell) girlfriend who breaks up with him at the beginning of the episode, is actually the real life wife of Carell. Known for her mid '90s stint on SNL, Walls and Carell have been married since 1995.
  6. Before Jim creates The Committee To Determine The Validity Of The Two Committees, Dwight demands that Pam and Karen turn over all party supplies that they gathered to throw a rival office Christmas party opposite Angelas. Dwight tells them that the supplies would be returned on January 4, which also happens to be the same day that the next episode would be aired.
  7. The closest Benihana to Scranton, PA is actually nearly 2 hours away in Plymouth Meeting, PA.
  8. Pam said that for the last few months she's been sending Dwight letters from the CIA, and Jim's Christmas gift is to decide what his top secret mission is. In the "Branch Closing" episode, Jim revealed that he'd been sending faxes to Dwight from future Dwight.
  9. The movie that Jim and Karen give to each other is "Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason." It came out in 2004, two years before this episode aired, two years before Jim and Karen started dating, and about a year and a half before they ever even met.
  10. The two actresses who play the waitresses at Benihana are not the same actresses who arrive with Michael and Andy to the Christmas Party.

Back from Vacation

  1. Michael gives Jan a fake name in the picture of the sandals resort, "Urkel Grue" Steve Carrel plays a villain/hero protagonist named "Gru" in the "Despicable Me" film series.

Traveling Salesmen

S03E12 Episode aired 11 January 2007
  1. To create the picture of young Jim and Dwight, a high school photograph of John Krasinski was photoshopped alongside a 1991 picture of Rainn Wilson. At the time, Wilson was touring with an acting company.
  2. While the sales team is standing in the parking lot, the actors feign cold shivers with winter gear; in actuality, it was 85 degrees.
  3. When Angela went to drink coffee with Pam, she uses the code names 'Noelle' and 'Kurt' to tell her what happened that morning. These are the middle names of Angela and Dwight, respectively.
  4. Although Pam is skeptical to get coffee with Angela due to their hatred/likeness for one another, in real life Angela Kinsey and Jenna Fischer are best friends.
  5. In the opening scene where Michael is controlling Harvey the computer, he invites Jim and Pam into his office, he says "me so horny, me lobe you long tim." This is a reference to his move 'The 40 Year Old Virgin' in which he says this line.
  6. When the sales teams are leaving for their sales calls, Michael throws a bag of laundry to Dwight. Andy asks him, "He does your laundry?" to which Michael replies, "Long story." He's referring to S3E3, "The Coup," in which Dwight attempted to take Michael's job and agreed to do Michael's laundry for a year after being caught.
  7. When Jim backs up and slams on the breaks, Dwight's head hits the back of Jim's seat. This would only happen if Jim hit the breaks while driving forward.
  8. The song that Dwight listens to in the car to pump himself up is "Kickstart My Heart" by Motley Crue. In the series finale, "Angela" by Motley Crüe is played at Dwight and Angela's wedding.

The Return

S03E13 Episode aired 18 January 2007
  1. For the big anger scene, Ed Helms actually bloodied his knuckles while punching the wall, something that took five or six takes.
  2. Ed Helms recorded Andy's self-recorded cellphone ring on his own personal computer.
  3. When Oscar asks what happened to Dwight, Creed says "You didn't hear? Decapitated, whole big thing. We had a funeral for a bird." Creed obviously got Dwight mixed up with Ed Truck, but Jim says "I'm pretty sure none of that's real." Jim was working at the Stamford branch when Ed Truck died, and still doesn't know that any of that happened.
  4. Steve Carell and Rainn Wilson had difficulty with their reuniting scene and had to stage it in several different ways.
  5. When Michael goes to pick up Dwight at Staples, the song "Up where we belong" is playing in the background. A reference from a scene in the movie "An officer, and a gentleman".
  6. Michael has a certificate of authenticity on his wall for a "genuine Seyko timepiece". Seyko is obviously a knock off of Seiko watches.
  7. When Oscar pulls in to the parking lot, Michael makes a big deal about how nice his car is and how good German engineering is. The car Oscar drives is a Lexus (which is NOT German), which appears to be a joke about Michael's character (though Oscar ignores the comment).
  8. Andy says he will complete anger management sooner with "name repetition, personality mirroring and positive reinforcement". This is similar to what he said when he began at the Scranton branch and wanted in with Michael, saying that he'd use "name repetition, personality mirroring and by never breaking off a handshake".
  9. Andy says he's doing anger management and thinks corporate sees him as "management material." He later becomes manager of the Scranton branch in season 8.

Ben Franklin

S03E14 Episode aired 1 February 2007
  1. The stripper that Dwight and Jim get also plays in an episode of Friends (The One With the Stripper - S8E8) as a stripper that Monica hires for Chandler but actually turns out to be a hooker.
  2. The blouse worn by the stripper during the party is a previous shirt Jenna wore as Pam last season.
  3. Oscar does not appear in this episode, despite returning in the previous episode, "The Return". Andy also does not appear, as he is in anger management training (stated in the on-line producer's cut of "The Return"). Toby also does not appear due to the fact that he was "sent home by Michael" so he wouldn't know of the strippers. This was shown in the deleted scenes for the show.
  4. Michael mentions that Ben Franklin was the sexiest president and is corrected saying Ben Franklin was never president. He was not President of the United States but Ben Franklin was the 6th President of Pennsylvania from 1785 to 1788

Phyllis' Wedding

S03E15 Episode aired 8 February 2007
  1. Davey Faragher, bassist for Elvis Costello's band, The Imposters, performs the role of bass player in wedding band, Scrantonicity.
  2. Stanley and his wife, and Jim and Karen both bring wedding gifts they reveal to each other as toasters. "Unbelievable", Stanley mutters sarcastically. Stanley mentioned in "Gay Witch Hunt" that he purchased a toaster as a gift to Pam and Roy for their canceled wedding, and subsequently became a two-toaster household.
  3. Kevin's Band "Scrantonicity" is a play on words of an album by The Police, titled Synchronicity. During the reception at Phyllis' Wedding the songs they are shown playing are covers of songs by The Police.
  4. The top of the wedding cake in this episode had a bride and groom facing a small white refrigerator. The groom's cake was a small silver refrigerator. The reason for the refrigeration theme was because the groom, Bob Vance, is known as "Bob Vance, Vance Refrigeration".
  5. This episode marks the fourth time an expletive has been censored.
  6. Oscar is seen, albeit briefly, in a few scenes with Gil, including a moment where Michael is giving his speech about Phyllis.
  7. When Phyllis is throwing her bouquet into the crowd of women, you clearly see it going directly to Kelly but right before she can catch it Ryan blocks her.
  8. Pam says that Phyllis has the same dress as Pam when she was going to get married. This same type of dress also appears at Jim and Pams wedding.

Business School

S03E16 Episode aired 15 February 2007
  1. Joss Whedon directed this episode with a subplot involving Jim transforming into a vampire. Whedon also created Buffy the Vampire Slayer (1997). His vamp mythology is borrowed heavily in this episode.
  2. The bat used on set was a combination of a mechanical bat, animated bat, and live bat.
  3. Joss Whedon directed this episode, and later went on to direct The Avengers and The Avengers: Age of Ultron; John Kransinski was poised to be cast as Captain America before Chris Evans was chosen.
  4. In this episode Michael mentions a former teacher called Mr. Handel. "Handel" is actually the danish word for business which may refer to the title of the episode.
  5. When Joss Whedon found out the script for the episode involved a bat and a joke about Jim turning into a vampire, he was initially surprised by the idea and assumed the writing staff was playing a joke on him. But they insisted that his directing this particular episode was completely random.

Cocktails

S03E17 Episode aired 22 February 2007
  1. The only Office episode directed by J.J. Abrams.
  2. In the bar scene where Pam tells Roy that she kissed Jim at Casino night, "Carry On My Wayward Son" by Kansas is playing during their conversation. Right when Roy throws the glass at the mirror and is yelling, the line "though my mind could think, I still was a mad man" is playing.
  3. When at the party at David Wallace's house when Jim, Karen, Dwight, Michael and Jan are all talking in a group, David and Rachel walk into the group and Rachel asks if she can get anyone anything, Jan says another martini, but they continue to talk and then Rachel leaves to take Dwight on a tour of the house, never getting Jan her martini
  4. When in CFOs party, Michael tells Jan to smell a vanilla scented candle which Jan refuses to do. Later in the show (season 4), Jan starts a scented candle business.

The Negotiation

S03E18 Episode aired 5 April 2007
  1. At the end, when Michael is discussing how he and Darryl both got higher salaries, he says, "Win, win, win." This is a reference to the season 2 episode "Conflict Resolution."
  2. Dwight's definition of a hero is pretty much the same from the season one episode, "Diversity Day", in which he doesn't distinguish between a super hero and a hero.
  3. The restaurant that Pam meets Roy at is the Hungry Fox Family Restaurant, which is not located in Scranton, PA. The restaurant is located at 13359 Sherman Way, North Hollywood, CA 91605.
  4. When Michael goes to get Toby to go to New York he trips on something as he is walking away.
  5. When Jan and Michael are alone discussing the raise, After Jan explains him asking for 15%, Michael says "Ah...so". A common Japanese phrase is "ahso desune", sometimes shortened to "ahso", which means "So that's how it is" or "So that's how it works"
  6. When Dwight says who is a hero, he refers to The character, "Hiro" from the TV series, "Heroes." Nicholas D'Agosto, who plays Jan's assistant, "Hunter" (introduced in this episode), was a series regular in the second season of "Heroes."

Safety Training

S03E19 Episode aired 12 April 2007
  1. At the end of episode 13, "The Return", Andy says he will complete his anger management training in 5 weeks instead of 10 by using "name repetition, personality mirroring, and positive reinforcement". When interviewed at the beginning of this episode Andy says that he did, in fact, complete anger management in 5 weeks.
  2. The hand movement used by Dwight Schrute to "shun", and then "un-shun" Andy Bernard was improvised by Rainn Wilson.

Product Recall

S03E20 Episode aired 26 April 2007
  1. Angela realizes that Kevin made an error adding 4 and 7. This implies that Jim charged his Dwight costume to the company (earlier in the episode, Jim stated that the glasses cost $4 and the rest cost $7).
  2. Referring to the crisis Michael says it's threat level midnight and Jim smiles at the camera because in the season 2 episode, "The Client", Pam finds a screenplay written by Michael titled, "Threat Level Midnight" and subsequently Jim organizes the office in a reading of the screenplay.
  3. When Creed is framing Debbie Brown for failing to spot the watermark, he tells Dwight that Debbie cited an "emergency dentist appointment" as her excuse for missing work. With this job I can barely cover that. I have a company car, but I still have to pay for the gas. Gas prices are high and I have no savings whatsoever. And it wasn't even me. It's so not fair that they want me to resign"

Women's Appreciation

S03E21 Episode aired 3 May 2007
  1. The sharpened broom head that Dwight is seen stabbing the hedge with, is the same broom that Creed sharpens for Dwight in the episode "Business School".
  2. After Michael says to Toby "show us your penis!". Jim is covering his mouth to stop from laughing.
  3. 14 air fresheners were added to Meredith's van to mask the smell of the beer bottles and trash props on the floor. However, the fresheners were removed due to the cast getting headaches from the strong smells.
  4. The exterior shown of the Mall at Steamtown is the parking garage area of the real location, and was taken looking southeast on Lackawanna Ave. The interiors are not of the actual mall.
  5. Michael's wishes for Pam, Kelly, and Angela are what the wizard gives the lion, the scarecrow, and the tin man in the Wizard of Oz.
  6. Michael's ringtone when Jan calls him is "My Humps" by The Black Eyed Peas.
  7. Michael makes a comment that a con of Jan's is that she has "shrunken chesticles." This is foreshadowing - after Michael and Jan break up, she gets a boob job, and then they get back together.

Beach Games

S03E22 Episode aired 10 May 2007
  1. When coming back from the trip, the office crew sings the opening theme from The Flintstones (1960-1966) in the bus. There is similar scene in the film Planes, Trains & Automobiles (1987) where people sing the same song in the bus and John Candy's character yells ''Wilma'' at the end of the song, just like Michael does in this episode.
  2. While taking the bus to the beach, the employees sing Kenny Rogers' "The Gambler." Later, Robert Shafer, who plays Bob Vance, Phyllis' husband, would be featured in a Geico commercial with Rogers where he sings the same song.

The Job

S03E23 Episode aired 17 May 2007
  1. It won an Emmy Award for Outstanding Single Camera Picture Editing for a Comedy Series.
  2. Pam is offered by Dwight an offer for Secret Assistant to the Regional Manager position, which she responds saying "Absolutely I do". She points out this is due to Jim providing this line in case Dwight ever asks for a secret offer. This is in reference to the episode "The Alliance" from season 1 where Dwight offers to Jim to join a secret alliance in the office in case of downsizing.
  3. John Krasinzki got his hair cut to film the movie License to Wed, which was explained as Jim getting a haircut for the interview at Karen's recommendation.
  4. This episode is the second hour-long episode of the season.
  5. When Jim came back from New York and asked Pam out for a dinner, Jenna Fischer didn't know that was happening. The crew wanted to surprise her that her character, Pam, will finally go on a date with JIm.
  6. The title of the episode is obviously referring to the job that Michael, Jim, and Karen are interviewing for at corporate, but it could also refer to Jan's boob job in a sense.
  7. The song "Kind and Generous" by Natalie Merchant that Michael plays as he leaves is same song that would later be used in the somewhat spinoff, Parks and Recreation (2009), when Ann (played by Rashida Jones who portrays Karen in The Office) gets ready to leave for Michigan.
  8. Pam is Dwight's Assistant to the Regional Manager; in the final season when Dwight is once again manager, Jim is Dwight's Assistant to the Regional Manager. Once again showing how alike Jim and Pam are.
