- The premiere had to be quickly re-written following Cote de Pablo's last minute decision not to renew her contract.
- "Whiskey Tango Foxtrot" is part of the military alphabet code which spells WTF, which is a euphemistic abbreviation for a phrase containing a swear word.
- This episode marks the first physical appearance of McGee's love interest Delilah Fielding. She was first mentioned in season 10 finale "Damned if you do".
- Though she is in contact with Tony, Ziva does not physically appear in this episode. That marks the first episode since "Mind Games", Season 3 Episode 3, that Ziva does not appear. It's also only the second episode, again with "Mind Games", to not feature Ziva or Caitlin Todd.

- Tony mentions he has two goldfish. In 11.1 Whiskey Tango Foxtrot, Tony had one goldfish, Kate. The new goldfish could be Ziva.
- Its stated above that the cap given to Ziva was Kate's, it was actually Tony's. He shot his favorite cap and Kate shot her non backed up Palm Pilot during shooting practice with Gibbs in NCIS: Marine Down (2003). The vest could be Kate's as its the same area she was shot saving Gibbs life in NCIS: Twilight (2005) before Ari killed her.
- This is Ellie Bishop's first case working with NCIS. Gibbs gives her a bullet proof vest with a bullet hole in it. He did the same thing with Ziva by giving her a ball cap with 2 bullet holes when she worked on her first case as liaison officer with NCIS. The ball cap was Tony's, and it's safe to assume the vest was Kate's from when she protected Gibbs.
- When Ellie gives Rudolf Stalin her card in the interrogation room, he realizes she tricked him. The card says 9800 Savage Rd., Fort George G. Meade, Maryland. This really is the address of the NSA.

- Ellie's first name is revealed to be Eleanor.
- The phone that is handed to Bishop during the meet with the kidnapper is a Samsung Gusto, an entry-level flip phone for prepaid accounts. It was replaced by the Samsung Gusto 2 in spring of 2012, indicating that the kidnapper stocks his burner phones well in advance.

- Vance tells DiNozzo he's not Dr. Phil and DiNozzo says he has the mustache. Michael Weatherly would go on to play Dr. Jason Bull. A character based on Dr. Phil McGraw's life as a trial analysis expert on Bull (2016).

- Keith Carradine, playing Manheim Gold a has been rock star, who is a songwriter in his own right (I'm Easy made famous by the Commadors in the '70) performs his own song at the end of this episode, Every Road which he wrote for the film Lake City (2008).
Crescent City: Part 1

- When Gibbs meets Brody, he comments it's been a while. Pride asks if they know each other and Gibbs says it's classified. The actress playing Brody, Zoe McLellan, played US Navy Petty Officer Jennifer Coates on JAG (1995). She was in the 2003 NCIS (2003) spin off episode JAG: Ice Queen (2003) along with Mark Harmon as Gibbs, so they had not seen each other since 2003.
- First of a two part episode that was meant to introduce another NCIS spin-off series, NCIS: New Orleans.
- In Abby's lab on the shelf behind her computer, we can see Ziva's Israeli flag.
- Gibbs states that he has known SSA (Senior Special Agent) Pride for 30 years, and that he would "trust him with his life". This indicates Pride and Gibbs first met sometime (around 1984) before Gibbs joined NIS, the predecessor agency to NCIS and was still in the Marine Corps.
- The Fed Five consisted of: Dan McLane - Special Agent In Charge. Michael Franks - Senior Special Agent. Felix Betts - Junior Special Agent. Dwayne Cassius Pride - Probationary Special Agent. Leroy Jethro Gibbs - Probationary Special Agent.
- The Crescent City is a popular nickname for New Orleans. During the nineteenth century, new neighborhoods expanded out from what is now known as the French Quarter. These areas followed the great curve of the Mississippi River, giving New Orleans the shape of a crescent.
- Lucas Black and Paige Turco both starred in American Gothic (1995). Lucas was 13 playing an orphan, Caleb, and Paige plays his cousin, Gail, who comes to town to take care of him. Gail is seduced by Sherriff Lucas Buck, played by Gary Cole, who is Caleb's father.

- While driving to the crime scene, Dr. Wade asks Gibbs and Bishop if either one of them knew anything about college football. Gibbs answered, "Nah, not much." Mark Harmon was the starting quarterback for the UCLA Bruins in 1972 and 1973.
- Due to the length of the first act, the on-screen credits do not roll until the second act, which is uncommon for any TV series. This is the second time this has happened on NCIS (2003).
- Second of a two part episode that was meant to introduce another NCIS (2003) spin-off series, NCIS: New Orleans (2014).
- Tony receives a brown paper package and says, "Brown paper packages are my favorite things." Based on his knowledge of movies, he may be referencing The Sound of Music (1965), "...brown paper packages, tied up with strings, these are a few of my favorite things..."

- The forensic scientist of the NCIS: New Orleans (2014) branch, Wendell Hobbs played by Aaron Moten, was replaced with Sebastian Lund played by Rob Kerkovich for the spin-off series.
- Legoland California's Miniland displays the city of New Orleans including multiple popular sites and a Mardi Gras parade.

- When McGee and DiNozzo go undercover as men from a pest control company, the name tags on their uniforms read "Charles" and "Gary." This is no doubt an in-joke nod to two of the executive producers of NCIS (2003), Chas. Floyd Johnson and Gary Glasberg.
- Olesya Rulin, who played Kim Troutman in this episode, also starred in High School Musical (2006).
