My Intern's Eyes

S05E01 Episode aired 3 January 2006
  1. From this episode on, watch John C. McGinley's right wrist. This is the first episode that he wears his "Downs Syndrome Awareness" bracelet. All of season five and on, he is wearing it. McGinley has a son with Downs Syndrome.
  2. The joke about a "horse hospital for humans" in which the doctors walk around the wards with shotguns, is taken from a well known "Far Side" cartoon by Gary Larson. This is an acknowledged homage because J.D. calls the patient he's about to shoot "Mr. Larson".

      My New God

      1. Turk tells Carla that if she had no hair, she would look like Danny DeVito. The scene then dissolves to the roof light of a taxi cab. Danny DeVito starred in the TV series "Taxi" from 1978 to 1983.

      My Missed Perception

      1. During the first photo shoot Rowdy is present too.
      2. While Dr. Kelso says he is 57, Ken Jenkins, the actor who portrays him, was 65 at the time. Michael Learned, the terminal patient, is only a year older.
      3. In the second photo shoot, director Bill Lawrence is visible in the close up when Carla and the Janitor are speaking (he's on the top row above Carla's left shoulder), but then he appears laying down on the ground in front when the camera pans out as the photo is about to be taken.
      4. Dr. Kelso mentions that he is 57. Given that the photo is for year 2005, this will put his year of birth to be 1948.

      My Way Home

      1. In this episode that parodies The Wizard of Oz (1939), Turk is trying to convince a father to turn off his son's life support so his heart can used in a transplant. The patient's name is Ray Bolger, also the name of the actor who played "The Scarecrow".
      2. This episode has many references to The Wizard of Oz. Zach Braff, who plays J.D., goes on to play a role as a monkey in a prequel to the movie called Oz: the Great and Powerful.
      3. At the beginning of this episode, which parodies "The Wizard of Oz", J.D. Is seen listening to the song Africa by the band Toto. Toto was the name of Dorothy's dog in "The Wizard of Oz"
      4. J.D. named his scooter "Sasha".
      5. While Turk and Carla are talking about becoming parents (and why Turk is nervous after watching an episode of Weber) you can see J.D. typing on a computer right behind Turk. However, J.D. never actually touches the keys - he just wiggles his fingers over the keyboard.
      6. In order to subtly connect the episode to The Wizard of Oz (1939) , the color scheme after the first half of the episode is intensified and brightened, so as to match the atmosphere after Dorothy emerges from her house following the tornado.

      My Big Bird

      1. Mr. Foster, the patient getting an MRI, is played by Peter Jacobson. He also plays Dr. Chris Taub in the show, "House M.D."
      2. When Dr. Cox called the cast "the 4 horsewomen of the apocalypse" all of the colors of the horses are represented by what they are wearing. Reid (white) Carla (red) JD (black) Turk (green)
      3. The two patients spoken of at length in this episode are named Mr. Sutton and Mr. Foster. Incidentally, there is a prolific Broadway actress named Sutton Foster.
      4. Tenth death in the series.

      My Half-Acre

      1. The song Turk dances to when he auditions for Ted/Janitor's air band is Belle Biv Devoe's "Poison". Some of the dance moves are taken directly from the "Poison" music video. Belle Biv Devoe and the song "Poison" are also referenced in episode 2.19, "My Kingdom".
      2. This is the second time Dr. Bob Kelso made a reference to Elvis Presley, referring himself as The King and doing his signature "Thank you very much" voice.

      Her Story II

      1. This story is said to have ripped off Seinfeld's episode "The Switch" where both girlfriends are dumped for not laughing, but instead saying "That's [so] funny" instead, which drives JD/Jerry crazy.
      2. Fourth episode not to have "My" in the title.

      1. J.D. wears a shirt that simply says "New Jersey," a reference to Zach Braff's home state.
      2. The sofa in Turk's apartment changes nearly every episode.
      3. Goof: JD reads as a lab result "her fio2 is still 50%". Fraction of inspired O2 is controlled by the clinician (amount of oxygen supplied) and is not measured by blood levels.

Numbers six through ten are all production assistants of some sort on the show,#5 Ken Whittingham is the director of the episode. #6 John 'Johnny O' Ornelas is the assistant property master. #7 Mark Stegemann is a producer, but also writer of the episode. #8 John Inwood is a recurring director and cinematographer for the series. #9 Liz Newman is a producer #10 "Franklyn Guttbutter" a riff on actual assistant Franklyn Gottbetter.

        1. Dr. Cox talks to a red stapler similar to the one used in Office Space. John C. McGinley was in Office Space.
        2. It is revealed that the Janitor is born in 1965 (being 19 years old in a 1984 sports meet)
        3. In the previous episode, (#15) J.D. shaves his head to go the extra mile for a leukemia patient. In this episode his hair is back and there's no mention of it. But in the next episode, (#17) J.D.'s head is shaved and he refers back to the event in episode 15.
        4. A Terrible Towel used by Pittsburgh Steelers fans can be seen in Turk and Carla's apartment.
        5. At the end of this episode you can see Todd does not have his "Doc" tattoo on his right arm at all.

        1. Neil Flynn (Janitor) and Paul Hipp (Marc) also appeared together on the show The Middle as Mike Heck and Reverend TimTom respectively.
        2. The music playing while the Janitor is giving Carla the evil eye is a selection from koyaanisqatsi. This particular excerpt was also used in the episode "My New God".
        3. Hulu cut this episode from it's streaming service because of a joke where JD does black face and Turk does white face.
        4. Twelfth death in the series as well as the first to not be a human in this case Kelso's dog Baxter.

        1. An overweight patient is advised that the only place with a MRI large enough is the zoo. This is similar to Grey's Anatomy: How Insensitive, Dr. Charles Percy suggests they use a CT scanner from the zoo, for which he is chastised. The practice of referring patients to a zoo or veterinarian is commonplace, especially in America due to the high occurrence of obesity.
        2. Fifth appearance of Dan Dorian.
        3. The names "George" and "Angie" that Carla and Turk both decide on for their child are the names of two main characters from the sitcom "George Lopez".

        1. The character of Eric McNair is actually named after a real-life fan of the show, who asked the writing staff to do so in a Q&A in celebration of their 100th episode.

        1. Where some sitcoms get lazy and do a flashback episode, the reminiscing of past experiences is acted out by the cast. The riddle and the bike are almost word for word as it was done before.
        2. The first 8 seasons were filmed in North Hollywood Medical Center, a decommissioned hospital.
