Scrubs

TV Series (2001–2010)

Season 1

Table of Contents

My First Day

S01E01 Episode aired 2 October 2001
  1. Elliot's character was originally written to be mean-spirited and opportunist; after careful consideration, the producers realized that Elliot's character wasn't sympathetic or likable, and therefore re-wrote and re-shot some of her scenes. This is why Elliot seems out of character in the pilot.
  2. Turk uses the electrical defibrillation paddles to "shock" an apparently unconscious patient, who immediately wakes up screaming in pain, apparently not having been unconscious at all. That patient was played by Vinko Bogataj, the Slovenian ski jumper whose disastrously unsuccessful ski jump attempt was made famous in the opening title sequence of ABC's television sport news show ABC's Wide World of Sports (1961).
  3. J.D. is loosely based on a real person and a lot of the situations the character faces are based on real-life moments the real J.D. had to face, including having nurses do his hypodermic procedures and IVs.
  4. They sprayed Sam Lloyd with fake sweat after giving him a pasty looking makeover. After the pilot aired his mother called him worried about how ill he looked on television.
  5. The fantasy scene that JD has about him and Elliot was filmed on the set of My Wife and Kids (2001).
  6. While 'Scrubs'' "regular episodes" are shot at the former North Hollywood Medical Center, The Pilot episode was filmed in another hospital in Glendale, California which, incidentally, has since been torn down. Some of the scenes in this episode had to be reshot in North Hollywood, though, making the continuity of this episode somewhat difficult for the crew.
  7. The guy on the scanner that JD is doctoring as Turk comes clean about really being scared all the time is the same actor who plays Lonnie (Michael Hobert).
  8. Several of the extras at the beginning of the episode are friends or acquaintances of the producers and show creator.
  9. The first instance, and one of only a VERY few times including the second episode "My Mentor," that Dr. Cox refers to Zach Braff as "JD"
  10. J.D says that he didn't stick the penny in the door but in the last episode he reveals that he did accidentally.
  11. In the episode "My Last Day" this incident is referenced but with a paper clip instead of a penny.
  12. First death in the series.
  13. J.D. self narrates that Elliott is his dream girl. He actually says this to her in S08E15 My Soul On Fire Pt2.

My Mentor

S01E02 Episode aired 4 October 2001
  1. Carla's threat in Spanish that she tells J.D. about Elliot is for Elliot "to watch her little behind, because if she doesn't, I am going to kick all the blonde dye off her head."
  2. This is one of the only episodes you see the front of the hospital
  3. The character of Will Forte, played by John Ducey, is named after Will Forte, who worked with the show's creator Bill Lawrence on Clone High (2002).
  4. During the high school scene Turk is seen in a red and white football jersey. Donald Faison played a defensive back in the movie Remember the Titans that used red and white jerseys.
  5. This is the only episode in which you can actually see the characters in the small hallway by the reception and waiting room. JD and Will (his patient that smokes) use this exit. In all other episodes, the camera faces the opening only, without showing them in the hallway.
  6. This is the first time that featured the "Sacred Heart Hospital" logo.
  7. The Janitor says he's 37 in "My Mentor", which was filmed in 2001, so he's 45 in 2009.

My Best Friend's Mistake

S01E03 Episode aired 9 October 2001
  1. At one point in the episode, Dr. Cox says " I swear to Aisha..." and if you look closely you can tell that this is obviously dubbed over. In the original airing of the episode, he says " I swear to Allah" but this has since been changed due to the possible cultural controversies it could cause.
  2. In this episode if you look at Laverne's name tag you can see it says Patti Anderson

  1. Features the second third and fourth deaths in the series.

    3. The first time "Sacred Heart's" had been mentioned, albeit via narrator J.D.

    1. Scrubs: My Super Ego (2001) was in production September 11, 2001. As with other productions, the filming halted for the day. When production commenced again the day after, the fantasy sequence of Dr. Cox examining JD and Nick Murdoch, like they were show dogs, was the first shot scene.
    2. Kelso calls the interns "Brain Trust." This is also what the janitor called his inner circle in a later season.

    My Fifteen Minutes

    My Day Off

    S01E09 Episode aired 20 November 2001
    1. For as much as JD hates beer, the drink that he is holding in the first two minutes of this episode is a Miller Lite.
    2. First episode to feature J.D. as a patient.
    3. The first episode of Scrubs to feature Michael McDonald, who would return to not only play the same character, but a few different characters and would also direct multiple episodes.

    3. The word 'malibu' is spelt out downwards on the whiteboard behind Dr Cox when he says "new game starts in 4 minutes".
    4. Fifth death in the series.

    My Balancing Act

    S01E13 Episode aired 15 January 2002
    1. The expression "When you hear hoof-beats behind you, think horses not zebras," which Cox tells J.D., is a well-known real-life axiom in medicine. It was coined in the 1940s by Dr. Theodore Woodward at the University of Maryland School of Medicine in Baltimore, Maryland, and the original phrasing is, "Don't look for zebras on Greene Street," referring to the street on which the University of Maryland Medical Center is located.
    2. J.D. brings up kuru as a possible diagnosis for a patient. The disease only exists in New Guinea and is transmitted by eating the brains of a family member, a rare form of funeral rite practiced by the Fore people.

    My Drug Buddy

    S01E14 Episode aired 22 January 2002
    1. Doctor Cox mentions Will and Grace in this episode. Sean Hayes, who previously starred as Dr Murdoch in S1e7, is a main character on Will and Grace.

    S01E15 Episode aired 5 February 2002
    1. Elliott says she might need a vagina transplant. Later in the series we find out that Elliot cannot say "vagina" but says "bajingo" instead so this episode is one of the rare times she says it.

Donald Faison missed the shot 21 times in a row before finally making it, much to the delight of creator Bill Lawrence, who frequently played against Faison.
      2. At one point, J.D. narrates, "A famous doctor once said, 'Show me a med student who only triples my work and I'll kiss his feet.'" This is Law #11 of the House of God, from the classic medical novel "The House of God" by Samuel Shem.
      3. Guest star Kelli Williams previously appeared with "Scrubs" star Judy Reyes on a 1992 "Law & Order" episode.

      My Tuscaloosa Heart

      S01E18 Episode aired 12 March 2002
      1. Dr. Kelso gave a fake history about his musical past. The descriptions were of Elvis Presley's life and death he even quotes "Then in 1977 i died on the toilet or did I" this is a reference to Elvis who was on the toilet at the time of his death.

      My Old Man

      S01E19 Episode aired 9 April 2002
      1. The Janitor's Dad, played by R. Lee Ermey, tells the Janitor to "sound off like [he's] got a pair!" Ermey's most famous portrayal, Gunnery Sergeant Hartman in Full Metal Jacket (1987), often used this line when yelling at the Marine recruits.
      2. JD's father (played by John Ritter) is invited to attend a lecture on heart murmurs. John Ritter died of an aortic dissection, a possible symptom of which is the presence of a heart murmur.
      3. The doctor who is focused on right before the end of Elliot and Turk's talk is wearing a name tag that reads 'Dr. Hunter S. Thompson'.
      4. In a later episode the Janitor tells J.D. that he met a man and not his father meaning he either died or he paid someone to pose as his father to trick him.
      5. The name on the chart that Elliot is holding when she informs JD of her parent's visit is "Basil Fawlty".
      6. Sarah Chalke and Markie Post also played mother and daughter in the television movie I've Been Waiting for You.
      7. It is revealed in this episode that J.D.'s self-talking / narration stemmed from his childhood. J.D.'s father noticed that and said that he thought J.D. "would have outgrown that by now."
      8. Though they never appeared on screen together, John C. McGinley (Dr. Cox) and R. Lee Ermey (Janitor's Father) both had minor roles in the movie Se7en (1997).
      9. Markie Post and John Ritter previously starred in the series Hearts Afire playing love interests.

      My Way or the Highway

      2. Even though not credited and has no lines, Snoop Dogg Intern is seen for a split second during rounds standing next to Murphy.
      3. The surgical vs medical intern face-off and Turk and JD singing on the fire escape is a reference to the Sharks vs Jets from West Side Story.

      My Sacrificial Clam

      S01E21 Episode aired 30 April 2002
      1. This episode was part of NBC's 75th Anniversary celebration, in which actors from previous NBC shows guest starred in current ones.

The four doctors that JD helps, after being stuck with the needle filled with the Hepatitis A patient's blood, are all played by actors who starred in St. Elsewhere (1982), another show about young interns learning the ins and outs of the job. The actors are Ed Begley Jr., William Daniels, Stephen Furst and Eric Laneuville. Daniels played the chief of surgery Dr. Mark Craig, Begley and Furst played the residents Dr. Victor Ehrlich and Dr. Elliot Axelrod and Laneuville played the orderly turned physician's assistant Luther Hawkins.

      S01E23 Episode aired 14 May 2002
      1. While Ben (Brendan Fraser) is spinning J.D. in pediatrics, Zach Braff improvises the line "Eagle!" This is the first of many times "Eagle!" is said throughout the series.
      2. In the scene in which Ben (Brendan Fraser) picks J.D. (Zach Braff) up over his shoulder and spins him around in the air, Braff is actually doing some of the camera work. He held the camera out in his arms and shot the close-ups of his face himself.
