Buffy the Vampire Slayer

TV Series (1997–2003)

Season 2

Table of Contents

When She Was Bad

S02E01 Episode aired 15 September 1997
  1. David Boreanaz played The Master in the non-flashback footage.
  2. The title is derived from a poem by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow: "And when she was good, She was very, very good. But when she was bad she was horrid."
  3. This season marks the first appearance of David Boreanaz in the opening credits.
  4. Xander makes a comment about Buffy's new shorter, blonder hair. This is because Sarah Michelle Gellar had had her hair restyled for Scream 2 (1997) which she filmed during the hiatus between Seasons 1 and 2 of Buffy the Vampire Slayer (1997).
  5. This marks the start of the tradition of all Buffy season premiers beginning in, or close to, a cemetery.
  6. As part of the band Cibo Matto, Sean Lennon can be seen performing at The Bronze. He is John Lennon and Yoko Ono's son.
  7. This marks the first appearance of the high school lounge room, which will make more appearances in the second and third seasons.
  8. Christophe Beck replaces Walter Murphy as the shows Music Director.
  9. This is one of two times in the series that Buffy breaks the fourth wall (also in Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Once More, with Feeling (2001)) and the first of three in the overall Buffyverse that a character does it (Lorne in Angel: Spin the Bottle (2002)).
  10. The following exchange was cut because of length: Hank: "Oh, I'm spoiling her. Did I forget to mention that?" Joyce: "What you forgot is that I'm gonna have to deal with another year of 'Daddy would let me buy that.'"
  11. Cordelia tells Buffy to "get over it" in response to Buffy's appalling behavior. Cordelia would again use this line, to Angel, in Angel (1999).
  12. The sexy music that Buffy is seducing Xander with on the dance floor is being performed by Cibo Matto entitled "Sugar Water".
  13. Joyce and Hank Summers make references to the shoes of Los Angeles, while the bags are being unpacked. The LA shoes were also the subject of conversations between Cordelia and Buffy, both in the Unaired Buffy pilot and in Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Welcome to the Hellmouth (1997).
  14. This is the second and final "real" appearance of Buffy's father Hank Summers in the series. All subsequent appearances would be in the form of flashbacks, dreams or hallucinations.
  15. Cordelia is reluctantly adopted into the Scooby Gang, though her participation will be lighter than other characters.
  16. Willow says there are no miniature golf courses in Sunnydale. Obviously one is added before Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Ted (1997) and other times where the Scooby gang plays putt-putt golf.
  17. The Master is well and truly dead after this. However, he will appear several times in flashback on Angel (1999).
  18. Joyce says she hopes Buffy can make it through the school year without getting kicked out, which happens between Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Becoming: Part 2 (1998) and Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Anne (1998).
  19. It may not have been intentional, but when Buffy is smashing the Master's bones near the end, one of the arms can be seen with all but the middle finger broken off, causing it to be as if the Master, even in death and being smashed, is shooting the bird at Buffy, forever telling her his feelings about their relationship and how she treats him. It can be seen several times during her bone smashing and is quite well aimed at her when she stops.
  20. This is the first attempt to raise a vampire from the dead during the series; the first time it actually happens is in Angel: To Shanshu in L.A. (2000), when Wolfram & Hart bring back Darla. It is also the first time one of the Scooby Gang tortures a vampire for information.
  21. Principal Snyder "smelling" expulsion about Buffy turns out to be true in the coming series.
  22. At the end of the episode, as Buffy makes amends with Willow and Xander, overtly happy music plays. This is the last time this will happen.

Some Assembly Required

S02E02 Episode aired 22 September 1997
  1. Angel reveals that he is 241 years old.
  2. Eric and Chris never appear again in the series, but they do feature in the official Sunnydale High Yearbook 1999, where both seem to have benefited from therapy.
  3. Daryl is the second known instance of a person being revived from the dead in the Buffyverse, the first being Buffy in Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Prophecy Girl (1997), and the first successful attempt with someone who could not be resuscitated by conventional means. However, it is a scientific/medical-rather than magical-reanimation of Daryl's body, begging the question of whether his soul would be returned to his body; this could explain his considerable lack of morals (blatant manipulation of his brother; willingness to commit murder).
  4. The destruction of the "old science building," the only structure of the original school still standing after the earthquake of 1937.
  5. The opening prologue returns and is now narrated by Anthony Head.
  6. The only time Angel is wearing a tan jacket.
  7. The first of three instances in the series of "making girls," the other two being the more successful April and the Buffybot, both made by Warren Mears in Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Intervention (2001).
  8. While on their first date at the Sunnydale football game, Giles remarks that American Football is rugby with pads. Jenny responds by telling Giles not to diss her country's national past time. However, baseball, not football is called the national past time. Football is called America's game.
  9. In the opening, Angel mentions that, when someone is first awakened in their grave, it tends to be disorienting. Buffy would later discover that when she is brought back to life in Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Bargaining: Part 1 (2001) and Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Bargaining: Part 2 (2001) inside her coffin and subsequently has to dig her way out of her grave.
  10. The beginning of Giles and Jenny's relationship, which will be a vital subplot for most of the season.
  11. After Cordelia is rescued by Xander, it is obvious she begins to see him in a different way, as she thanks him for his heroic act. This hints at their relationship later in the season.
  12. After Angel leaves to take Cordelia home, Xander makes a comment about this, stating "How about that? Always pegged him as a "one-woman" vampire." Despite saying this jokingly, this may have been foreshadowing of Angel loving Buffy and Cordelia both since Season 3 of Angel (1999).
  13. The roots of the Cordelia/Xander affair and relationship.

School Hard

S02E03 Episode aired 29 September 1997
  1. Juliet Landau didn't have to audition for the part of Drusilla. Joss Whedon had been very taken by her performance in Ed Wood (1994) so she was offered the part within an hour of meeting with Whedon.
  2. James Marsters (Spike) has revealed in interviews that he played Spike having an attraction to Buffy from the start, which is evident in the scene where he observes Buffy for the first time, on the dance floor at the Bronze.
  3. Despite, or because of, Joyce's attack on him, Spike later has a deep respect for Joyce Summers, developing somewhat of a friendship with her.
  4. When Sheila asks Buffy if she really burnt down a building one time, Buffy replies "Not exactly one time", referencing when Buffy was involved in the burning down of an abandoned science building in Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Some Assembly Required (1997).
  5. Principal Snyder talks to a cop after the fight, and they agree to say what happened was another "gang related violence," indicating that the Sunnydale police have been covering up vampire attacks for a while now.
  6. When Buffy first encounters the Big Ugly outside the Bronze, she tells Xander to go get a stake. The script reads "Xander races to the table. Opens Buffy's purse, claws through lipstick, make-up, hair brush, a tampon! XANDER - Ahhh! He drops it like a hot tampon, finally finds a stake, runs."
  7. Spike calls Angel his sire, an intentional misdirection to make fans believe that Angel was the vampire who sired him. When Spike uses sire he also mentions "Yoda", indicating that he thought of Angel as his mentor - the father-figure who taught him after he became a vampire. In interviews, Joss Whedon has stated that a "sire" can mean any vampire ancestor. So Spike can consider Drusilla, Angel, Darla, and the Master to all be his sires, even though he was sired by Dru.
  8. Spike seems quite happy to see Angel, although they have had a very rocky relationship even when Angel had no soul. This animosity will remain through both the Buffyverse.
  9. At the end, Spike complains about "A Slayer with family and friends." Buffy's rejection of the typical "lone wolf" style of Slaying will come up frequently in the series, usually in the context of people questioning her competence.
  10. Spike tells Buffy that the last Slayer he killed begged for her life. The last Slayer Spike killed was Nikki Wood. In Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Fool for Love (2000). Spike murders her, but the exchange as the story unfolds is not shown, only through the Spike of the 1970s addressing Buffy in the present, and as such could be missing Nikki's pleas. Later, in Angel: Damage (2004) deranged Slayer Dana says that Nikki's plea was, "Please, I have to get home to my son Robin."
  11. Cordelia joins the other characters making stakes in the library without any specific backstory as to why she is there, marking her as a full Scooby for the first time.
  12. Drusilla has a vision of Buffy and says, "It's dark" and "I can't see". Moments later the camera cuts to Buffy looking at herself in a mirror. Dru's comments about not being able to see her are made because Buffy is looking in a mirror.
  13. Spike greets Angel by saying "AN-gelus" whereas in the rest of the series Angel's demonic half is pronounced "an-GEL-us."
  14. In the original script, Spike's car was intended to be a Cadillac. In reality, it is a Desoto Sportsman, California license plate number HIA-873.
  15. Joyce and Snyder meet for the first time, developing their mutual disdain into Season 3.
  16. Spike's line was cut from the original script for length: "Would it kill ya, a little mouthwash every couple hundred years?"
  17. Xander's line was cut from the original script for length: "The important thing in punch is the ratio of vodka to schnapps.... That was obviously far too sophisticated a joke for this crowd."
  18. Willow wears a Scooby Doo, Where Are You! (1969) T-shirt, Sarah Michelle Gellar would later play Daphne in Scooby-Doo (2002) and Scooby-Doo 2: Monsters Unleashed (2004).
  19. Spike pronounces Angel's vampire name "AN-ge-lus" (similar to the pronunciation of the city of Los Angeles); throughout the remainder of the series, the pronunciation "an-GE-lus" is more often used.
  20. An exchange between Buffy and Giles was cut from the original script for length: Buffy: "I don't suppose this is something about happy squirrels?" Giles: "Vampires." Buffy: "That was my next guess." Pop Culture References
  21. A possible clue as to Willow's future character development is found in the final scene where she and Cordelia are 'in the closet' together.
  22. It's established that Spike calls Angel "AN-gel-us" when he first sees him in the school. Actually several other characters both in Buffyverse and Angelverse call Angel AN-gel-us rather that what will finally be established as the correct pronunciation of An-GEL-us. It's believed that characters/actors/crew were unsure or confusing the pronunciation of Angelus with Los Angeles .
  23. When James Marsters later played Milton Fine/Brainiac on Smallville (2001), one of his lines to Clark (Tom Welling) in "Smallville: Thirst (2005)", in which Clark encounters a sorority of vampires, is "There's no such thing as vampires."
  24. Joss Whedon originally intended for Collin, the Anointed One, to be the main villain of Season Two. This had to be abandoned because Andrew J. Ferchland's voice had begun to change, ruining his believability as a non-aging being. Thus, Collin was killed off and replaced by Spike.
  25. Spike was originally intended to appear in only a few times in the Second Season. However, his character was immediately embraced and loved by Buffy the Vampire Slayer (1997) fans, which resulted in Joss Whedon's decision to keep him around longer.
  26. Spike killed two Slayers, an exception among vampires. Later, Drusilla will achieve this status by killing Kendra and Marianne.
  27. First appearances of Spike and Drusilla.
  28. Final appearance of The Anointed One.

Inca Mummy Girl

S02E04 Episode aired 6 October 1997
  1. Both Nicholas Brendon and Ara Celi had to eat up to ten twinkies each for each take of the scene in which they are eating lunch.
  2. First appearances of Seth Green and Danny Strong in Buffy the Vampire Slayer (1997). Although Danny Strong did have one line in Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Unaired Pilot (2003).
  3. Sitting in the library, Willow is holding a frog cuddly-toy, even though she has frog fear.
  4. David Boreanaz (Angel) does not appear. This marks the first and only time (until his departure from the show) that he is absent since joining the main cast.
  5. The first of several times Oz will spot Willow, before finally meeting her in Buffy the Vampire Slayer: What's My Line?: Part 2 (1997). Through the crowd, Oz spots Willow in her Eskimo outfit and is instantly smitten. When he tries to speak to her she is being pulled away by Buffy to find Xander.
  6. This marks the first time Cordelia walks in public without embarrassment with the Scoobies without pretense or excuse to her old friends about why she's associating with Buffy and the gang.
  7. Xander asks Ampata, "You're not a praying mantis, are you?", in reference to Ms. French, Xander's crush in Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Teacher's Pet (1997), who turned out to be a giant She-Mantis. Later, characters will allude to "Inca Mummy Girl" (as they call her), as one of several examples of evil supernatural women Xander has fallen for (others being the monstrous Ms. Natalie French, Anya and Lissa).
  8. The band name on the drum kit for Oz's band is "Dingoes ate my Baby", a reference to the Lindy Chamberlain Creighton case in Australia.
  9. This is the first time Xander kisses someone on screen.
  10. Ampato and Sabancaya are both volcanoes in Peru.
  11. Xander's costume for the exchange-student dance references the Man with No Name, the character Clint Eastwood plays in "The Dollars Trilogy". When Buffy asks about his costume, he explains that he is from "the country of Leone; it's in Italy (actually Spain), pretending to be Montana (actually Texas or New Mexico)" - a further reference to the Spaghetti Westerns directed by Italian filmmaker Sergio Leone. EDIT: This entry has misinformation in it. When Xander says he's from the country of Leone; he is referring only to Sergio Leone the famed Director of "The Man With No Name Trilogy" a.k.a "The Dollars Trilogy". Further, none of the films were ever filmed in Leone, Italy. They were filmed in various locations about the world but primarily in Spain. As far as where they were supposed to be taking place that ranged from Mexico to the Territories of the US pre- and post- Civil War era. The "Man With No Name" was played by Clint Eastwood and Xander's outfit is very near a replica of what the No Name character wore in each iconic film.
  12. There is a black and white oval sticker labeled by the letters "WP" seen behind Xander when he says to Ampata, "Why'd you run away?" The letters stand for the southern jam/rock band Widespread Panic. The same sticker appears in Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Halloween (1997), Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Bad Eggs (1998), Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Surprise (1998), Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Phases (1998), Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Bewitched, Bothered and Bewildered (1998), Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Becoming: Part 2 (1998), Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Dead Man's Party (1998), Buffy the Vampire Slayer: A New Man (2000), Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Wild at Heart (1999), Buffy the Vampire Slayer: The Yoko Factor (2000), and Buffy the Vampire Slayer: The Replacement (2000). Later, starting in Season 4, Buffy and Willow have a Widespread Panic poster in their dorm room.
  13. Gil Birmingham, who portrays the Peruvian Man, would be known for his portrayal of Billy Black in the Twilight (2008) film series, which also deals about the romance between a girl and a bloodthirsty creature.
  14. This exchange was cut because of length: Ampata: "He [Xander] has a way of making the milk come out of my nose."Buffy: "And that's good?"This line was also cut:Buffy: "I'm not a big secret-sharer. I like my secrets. They're secret."
  15. This is the fifth time without any vampires. (Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Witch (1997), Buffy the Vampire Slayer: The Pack (1997), Buffy the Vampire Slayer: I, Robot... You, Jane (1997), and Buffy the Vampire Slayer: The Puppet Show (1997) are the first four).
  16. Before Buffy and her friends go into the museum they are walking through a rose garden. In the background, you can see the buildings used for exteriors of The Jeffersonian Institute on Bones (2005).
  17. The first appearance of Jonathan Levinson, a minor character who repeatedly pops up in Seasons Two, Three, Four, Six and Seven. In the early seasons, Jonathan often escapes near death situations through blind luck. In Season Six, he is a member of The Trio, with Warren Mears and Andrew Wells, the three men who have plans to take over Sunnydale.

Reptile Boy

S02E05 Episode aired 13 October 1997
  1. The term "patrolling" is first used. Prior to this, Buffy's graveyard exploits are referred to as hunting. Furthermore, this marks the first time that she patrols with no specific purpose. From this point on, she will patrol nightly.
  2. One of the few times someone other than Joss Whedon both wrote and directed.
  3. In his DVD commentary, writer/director David Greenwalt says that when he wrote it, he thought that he had invented a great demon name, Machida. He later realized that he had been inspired by the word Makita, which he had seen written on the drills carried by the show's grips.
  4. In "A Buffy Bestiary," a special features video packaged with the Season Two DVD set, Marti Noxon acknowledged the "phallic imagery" and confessed, "Yes, it's a metaphor."
  5. At the end, Buffy agrees to have coffee with Angel, which marks the beginning of their formal dating relationship.
  6. Although Cordelia tells Buffy "Don't wear black, silk, Chiffon or spandex: these are my trademarks," Buffy shows up in a little black dress.
  7. Giles asks Buffy how many people her age can say that they have a purpose, a commitment in life. Although she answers "none", a few years later in Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Potential (2003), she says a similar thing to the potentials, that although most people have no idea why they exist, the potentials do. They have "a mission, a reason for being here."
  8. When Willow, Xander, Giles, and Angel storm the fraternity, Angel goes into the household without being invited, despite being a vampire. This is because the fraternity brothers are only temporary residents. However, later, Angel needs an invitation to enter Buffy's dorm room, despite the fact that she could also be considered only a temporary resident. When Xander convinces one of the brothers to let him in, the latter says "Come in", and perhaps that open invitation was enough for Angel to go inside.... This isn't relevant. Angel entered the fraternity building, not an individual room. If he was attempting to enter a bedroom (as in Buffy's dorm room) he would have needed an invite.
  9. Deals with allegories of date-rape, spiked drinks, and not judging people by their appearances. This is yet another Hellmouth metaphor.
  10. It's quite interesting that Indian movies were a motif, because half-human, half-snake serpent people called nagas are prominent in Indian mythology. Like Machida, the nagas were believed to live underground and, in fact, some, especially in southern India, still worship the nagas as bringers of fertility.
  11. Greg Vaughan, the actor who played Richard Anderson, was also in the short-lived series Malibu Shores (1996) with Charisma Carpenter. He was also a regular on Charmed (1998) as Dan Gordon; Charisma would later have a recurring role as Kyra the Seer on the same series.
  12. Cordelia's licence plate is "QUEEN C".
  13. The attempted sacrifice takes place on October 10 (the 10th day of the 10th month, as stated by Tom Warner).
  14. The first of several fraternity-related supernatural incidents, most of which occur from Season Four to the end of the series, the last being Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Selfless (2002).
  15. The opening scene is reminiscent of Friends (1994), in which the characters watch a show in another language and make up the words themselves.
  16. Cordelia reiterates her belief that older boys are the ones she wants to date. This was first mentioned in Buffy the Vampire Slayer: The Harvest (1997).
  17. The last time Buffy and Cordelia are chained up in this environment is the same thing that happened when Buffy and Cordelia were tied to a chair where Cordelia was about to be victimized by Marcie Ross in Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Out of Mind, Out of Sight (1997).
  18. The first incident of a group of men using magic to better their situation in life. A similar situation is seen in Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Help (2002).
  19. Buffy and Cordelia will once again find themselves targeted together by demons in Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Homecoming (1998).
  20. When Willow found out that Buffy was going to the frat party with Cordelia, she asked Xander if she sounded jealous. While it's probably not the intention, it can be considered foreshadowing to her future relationship with Tara and Kennedy. It is more likely that her jealousy is over Buffy hanging out with Cordelia instead of her.
  21. The main villain frat-boy is led away by Angel while Cordelia upbraids him. In the original script, however, Machida emerges from the pit and eats him. This proved impossible for the production crew to do with the CGI of the time. David Greenwalt mentions in the DVD commentary that the CGI problems also ended plans for Machida to be a recurring villain.
  22. This was an allegory for college rape culture, where students can do unspeakable things to young women and still climb the social ladder to a place of prestige. In classic Whedon fashion, a twist was added to the message in that the members of the fraternity became so successful because they abused women.
  23. Cordelia intimidates Xander by saying that the only way he'll ever go to college is to deliver a pizza, foreshadowing his choice not to enroll in college in Season Four. Coincidentally, Cordelia will never go to college either after her parents are convicted for tax fraud and she is reduced to poverty.
  24. The very beginning, while Buffy, Willow and Xander are enjoying a relaxed evening of Bollywood, Buffy says, "I, for one, am giddy and up. There's a kind of hush all over Sunnydale. No demons or vampires to slay. I'm here with my friends. {Cocking her head as she looks at the TV.} So how does the water buffalo fit in again?" This is a definite foreshadowing of Season 4, Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Hush (1999) where all of Sunnydale wakes up with the inability to speak, caused by the terrifying demons called "The Gentlemen".

Halloween

S02E06 Episode aired 27 October 1997
  1. It is learned that Giles' nickname in his youth was Ripper. At one point, a prequel spin-off named "Ripper", detailing adventures of young Giles, was proposed.
  2. Writer Carl Ellsworth was fired by Joss Whedon immediately after completing the script.
  3. This is the first hint at Giles's past, more of which is explained in Buffy the Vampire Slayer: The Dark Age (1997).
  4. Willow's line, "Wild on me equals spaz" was cut when shown on the BBC because, in the UK, "spaz" is a mildly offensive term, deriving from the archaic term "spastic", used to describe a handicapped or disabled person.
  5. Xander's soldier experience and military knowledge is referenced several times in the series, most notably in Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Innocence (1998) and Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Graduation Day: Part 2 (1999).
  6. Willow discusses Xena. Writer Carl Ellsworth will later go on to write for Xena: Warrior Princess (1995).
  7. Xander had told Cordelia she could never get between Buffy and Angel. There seems to be slight truth in that statement, as in the comics, Angel had much later told Buffy that he couldn't be happy with anyone else but her in the Twilight.
  8. First appearance of Larry Blaisdell.
  9. The two faced statue, Janus, used by Ethan Rayne , is later seen in Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Tabula Rasa (2001) behind Giles when he finds his airline ticket in his pocket, as well as in Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Dead Things (2002) on a shelf next to the cash register. In ancient Roman mythology, Janus was the (literal) two-faced god of gates, of doors, and of beginnings and endings, and was worshiped at harvests, marriages, births, and other kinds of beginnings. (The month January is named after him, as it is the "door" into the new year.) It might be speculated the statue symbolizes Giles leaving Sunnydale and going to England.
  10. The first interaction between Willow and Oz. (They bump into each other but he doesn't recognize her in her ghost costume.)
  11. The costume Willow wears is described as "Hot Rocker Chick" in the script which is read by the network's censors.
  12. Contrary to popular belief, Cordelia doesn't learn that Angel is a vampire here. Despite having interacted with him regularly since Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Prophecy Girl (1997), she doesn't believe Buffy when she tells her. Later, when Buffy's under the spell and tells her again, she sarcastically replies: "Yes Buffy, Angel is a vampire, but he's a good vampire." She actually finds out off-screen, somewhere.
  13. Xander tells Snyder that one day he will tell him exactly what he thinks of him. This will occur in Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Restless (2000) although it is arguably imaginary.
  14. Upon seeing Willow again, Oz remarks "Who is that girl?!" which is exactly what he said on his first sighting of Willow in Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Inca Mummy Girl (1997).
  15. The Bronze may be the only club in Sunnydale, but a place called the Shelter Club is close enough for Dingoes Ate My Baby to have a gig.
  16. Costume designer Cynthia Bergstrom picked this as her favorite piece of the series.
  17. When Oz sees Willow crossing the road, he is driving a car with the steering wheel on the right.
  18. At the end, Ethan leaves a note for Giles that says "Be Seeing You." This is a tribute to the cult series, The Prisoner (1967) where that phrase was used as a typical farewell.
  19. This marks the first appearance of Ethan Rayne, who will show up as a minor antagonist at several points in the future.
  20. Willow states that Angel would never fall for someone like Cordelia. This turns out to be false, as Angel and Cordelia not only become close friends but eventually fall in love in Angel (1999).
  21. One of the only three times Halloween is part of the story.

Lie to Me

S02E07 Episode aired 3 November 1997
  1. When Buffy reminisced about Ford at her old high school, she mentions the song I Touch Myself by Divinyls. The same band provides much of the music for Buffy the Vampire Slayer (1992).
  2. This was Buffy's first encounter with "Chanterelle", whom she later met in Los Angeles as "Lily". She later assumed the identity "Anne Steele" under which name she had encounters with Angel who didn't recognize her despite meeting her here. Under that identity, one she took partially from Buffy herself, Anne opened a homeless shelter for teens.
  3. Guest star Jason Behr reunited with Sarah Michelle Gellar 8 years later when they made The Grudge (2004).
  4. Jeff Pruitt, the stunt supervisor of Buffy the Vampire Slayer (1997) until Season 5, cites Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Lie to Me (1997) as his favorite.
  5. The movie playing at the Sunset Club is Dracula (1974), starring Jack Palance.
  6. Stunt-woman Julie Michaels plays the vampire, Julia, who is freed by Ford and steals a book from the library for Spike.
  7. This line was cut for length: Angel: "Yeah, I eat too. Not for nutritional value - it just kind of passes the time."This exchange was also cut:Buffy: "Do they know about 'fun' in England?Giles: "Yes, but it's considered very poor taste to have any."
  8. After Willow's nervous conversation with Buffy and Ford, Buffy says, "There aren't two of those in the world." Foreshadows Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Doppelgangland (1999) where there are two Willows in the world for a short time. The good Willow and the bad Willow she would have become had Buffy not come to Sunnydale.
  9. The book stolen by the Blond vampire was the Du Lac manuscript.
  10. Ford's line "die young and stay pretty" is a reference to the line "live fast, die young and leave a beautiful corpse" from Humphrey Bogart's Knock on Any Door (1949). James Dean also quoted the line in an interview shortly before his death.
  11. Angel's connection to Drusilla is revealed.
  12. Drusilla said to Angel "The girl, the Slayer, your heart stinks of her." This was a close parallel to when she told Spike "You're all covered with her. I look at you and all I can see is the Slayer."
  13. Xander says "Once more, with tension". The show would later go on to have a musical titled Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Once More, with Feeling (2001).
  14. Buffy tells Angel she loves him.
  15. This was the first time Buffy witnessed a human (Her friend, Ford) attempt to become a vampire for personal gain.
  16. Angel's investigation into the Sunset Club and Ford could be foreshadowing of his later detective agency where he investigated paranormal events in Los Angeles. He does the investigation in a similar manner, just with Willow and Xander instead of his own team.
  17. Drusilla shouldn't be able to whistle as whistling involves blowing air and as angel said in an earlier episode, he couldn't give CPR because vampire don't breathe
  18. Ford refers to Buffy taking part in a beauty contest at her old school. Sarah Michelle Gellar would appear in just such a contest in I Know What You Did Last Summer (1997).
  19. Todd McIntosh: The fake vampire who greets Buffy when she visits the Sunset Club is the show's make-up supervisor.
  20. Julia Lee makes her first appearance. Her character appears several times (first as Chantarelle then Lily, and finally as Anne, taking Buffy's second name as her own by gratitude) throughout Buffy the Vampire Slayer (1997) and also the spin-off Angel (1999). Her character even discusses the various name changes.

The Dark Age

S02E08 Episode aired 10 November 1997
  1. There is a photo of a young Rupert Giles holding a bass guitar. The production crew faked the photo by superimposing his head onto a photo of Sid Vicious.
  2. Giles states, "And the rest is silence," which was also a crucial line in the movie Buffy the Vampire Slayer (1992). It is also a reference to William Shakespeare's Hamlet, where the title character's dying words are, "The rest is silence."
  3. This is the first time we see Giles' apartment, which becomes a major setting in the later seasons.
  4. One of the first instances of Willow demonstrating leadership in the Scooby Gang in place of Buffy or Giles, something which will come into greater significance later in the series.
  5. Cordelia's character is shown to be evolving. While she is initially only at the school for a Saturday class, she offers her help instead of being asked because she cares about Giles, showing that she's becoming more caring. In the past she usually seems to be helping the Scooby Gang because of the situation or because they asked her rather than offering her help.
  6. This is the time details about Giles' more "wild" youth were shown, though it was foreshadowed in Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Halloween (1997). His wild past will occasionally return to haunt him throughout the series.
  7. Buffy and Willow later play the "Anywhere But Here" game in the season 8 comic of the same name. This time, in Buffy's fantasy, she is approached by Daniel Craig whilst lying on the beach then being the object of affection for 2 different Christian Bale characters. Willow's fantasy has changed to herself and Tina Fey being trapped in a cabin during a snowstorm.
  8. The music to which Buffy aerobicizes and Giles objects, despite being updated to a late-'90s techno idiom, quotes a prominent guitar riff from the musical Jesus Christ Superstar. The riff underscores the 39 Lashes in the "Trial Before Pilate", appears prominently in the Overture, and opens the song "Heaven on Their Minds", which is sung by the character Judas Iscariot-a role originated by Anthony Head's older brother Murray Head on the original 1970 concept album of the musical.
  9. Giles slams a door in Buffy's face. Buffy does the same thing six years later at the end of Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Lies My Parents Told Me (2003).
  10. When Cordelia states that she'll "be in therapy till I'm thirty," Charisma Carpenter's actual age was 27.
  11. A Mimic (1997) poster can be seen in the movie theater.
  12. In this episode Angel is forced to put Eygons host body (Jenny Calendar) in danger by by choking her. In a later episode Angeles kills Jenny by snapping her neck.
  13. Xander refers to his Uncle Rory being a taxidermist. This is corroborated by Rory pointing out a poorly stuffed animal head at Xander and Anya's wedding.
  14. This marks one of the first instances of Willow demonstrating leadership in the Scooby Gang in place of Buffy or Giles, something which will come into greater significance later in the series.
  15. Angel saves Jenny's life and he is also the one to take it in Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Passion (1998) as Angelus.
  16. Later, it was demonstrated that Eyghon was never destroyed and survived by possessing a dead rat. It was the first time that the fate of a character was retconed on the Buffyverse. Contrary to other characters who are returned in a living dead, astral form or resurrected.
  17. Later, it was demonstrated that Eyghon was never destroyed and survived by possessing a dead rat. This is the first time that the fate of a character is changed on the show.
  18. Xander's comment, "nobody can be wound as straight and narrow as Giles without a dark side erupting," is also interesting if applied to Willow Rosenberg, regarding later shows such as Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Grave (2002).
  19. Xander is shown protecting Cordelia during Eyghon's attack in the library foreshadowing their growing relationship. But not EVERYTHING is foreshadowing
  20. Possessed Jenny says to Giles, "Was is good for you?" Later in the season Angelus writes "Was it good for you?" in Jenny's Uncle's blood to Buffy.
  21. Due to the events that take place, Giles' and Jenny's relationship becomes strained.
  22. When the Scoobies are in the library researching Eyghon, Willow reads the following passage out loud: "... Unless the proper rituals are observed, the possession is permanent and Eyghon will be born from within the host." To this, Cordelia remarks "I'm guessing ew!" Later, on the spin-off series "Angel" (1999), Cordelia herself will become possessed and impregnated by demonic hosts on three separate occasions.

What's My Line?: Part 1

S02E09 Episode aired 17 November 1997
  1. The term "Scooby Gang" is used for the first time, when Xander tells Cordelia "You want to be a member of the Scooby Gang you gotta be willing to be inconvenienced every now and then."
  2. The police officer's uniform at the career fair who stands in the background when Xander and Willow talk to the principal wears the crest of the movie Police Academy (1984).
  3. When Xander and Cordelia break into Buffy's house, the scenes were filmed on location in the actual house. By the time production had begun on Buffy the Vampire Slayer: What's My Line?: Part 2 (1997), they had moved to a replica sound stage. The only noticeable difference is the windows on either side of the front door. When Cordelia lets Norman Pfister into the house, you can see the windows are standard glass with curtains. However, in Part Two they are slim panes of non-see through glass.
  4. Bianca Lawson (Kendra) originally auditioned for the role of Cordelia.
  5. The Tarot cards that Drusilla consults are not real ones. Writer Marti Noxon had no idea what images were used on real Tarot cards so she just made up whatever images were necessary for her plot.
  6. Writer Marti Noxon's first show for Buffy the Vampire Slayer (1997).
  7. Darla asks Angel in Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Angel (1997) if he believes Buffy would ever be able to kiss his "real face." She does so here.
  8. Principal Snyder says to Xander, "Whatever comes out of your mouth is a meaningless waste of breath. An airborne toxic event." This is an homage to Don DeLillo's 1985 novel 'White Noise', the second part of which is entitled "The Airborne Toxic Event".
  9. On the table in Angel's apartment there are two ashtrays, although he is never seen smoking.
  10. Willow has a irrational fear of frogs, also known as ranidaphobia. It will used to her advantage in Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Killed by Death (1998).
  11. It is revealed there are forty-three churches in Sunnydale.
  12. Buffy's career day tests suggest she should become a police officer. In the season 9 comics, she will work for the San Francisco Police's Vampire Taskforce.
  13. Buffy briefly wonders on the origin of the phrase "the whole nine yards". The true origin of which is unknown, though many linguists suggest it came from the American Military.
  14. Willow and Oz finally meet, having almost done so in Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Inca Mummy Girl (1997) and Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Halloween (1997).
  15. The ice rink, called Iceland, is found at 8041 Jackson Street in Paramount, California. This is around 25 miles from where Buffy was filmed.
  16. Willy's Place is seen for the first time. The bar also appears other times including Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Amends (1998), Buffy the Vampire Slayer: The Zeppo (1999), Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Goodbye Iowa (2000), and Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Family (2000).
  17. Buffy is recommended to consider a career in law enforcement at the career's fair. Of the Buffy main cast four will go on to play FBI agents, David Boreanaz in Bones (2005), Eliza Dushku in Banshee (2013), Nicholas Brendon in Criminal Minds (2005) and Emma Caulfield Ford in Supergirl (2015). Marc Blucas will play a Secret Service agent in First Daughter (2004), Alyson Hannigan will play a rookie cop in That '70s Show (1998) and Tom Lenk an incompetent detective on Joss Whedon's Much Ado About Nothing (2012). Ironically Sarah Michelle Gellar is one of the few Buffy alumni never to have portrayed a law officer.
  18. This is the first time written by Marti Noxon and the only by Howard Gordon.
  19. Buffy faces two vampires. She "dusts" one before seeing the other has run away. She says "One down, one... gone." The same situation plays out with two demons in Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Earshot (1999).
  20. Sarah Michelle Gellar does all of her own ice skating. According to Marti Noxon she was a keen ice-skater who even won competitions in her younger years. Buffy the Vampire Slayer (1997) co-star Julie Benz (Darla) was once rated 12th best ice-skater in the US whilst Michelle Trachtenberg (dawn)/would learn to skate in order to play a competitive skater in Disney's Ice Princess (2005).
  21. The hold of the plane in which Kendra arrived in Sunnydale was turned upside down and used as a sewer tunnel in later in the series.
  22. The idea of Buffy's death in Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Prophecy Girl (1997) activating a new Slayer will remain important throughout the series, especially after the introduction of Faith.
  23. Introduces the character of Kendra, the first Vampire Slayer besides Buffy to be featured on the show.
  24. Buffy's lack of plans for a paid career aside from her unpaid calling as the slayer will become important in season 6 when she struggles to find well paid employment that she is suited for.
  25. Spice Williams-Crosby (Patrice the 'cop') later portrayed Debbie in Angel: Salvage (2003). She attacks Faith in prison working on behalf of The First.
  26. While the Order of Taraka are summoned to deal with Buffy and are a major opponent, the contract is pulled in Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Ted (1997) after Spike's apparent death.
  27. The bespectacled vampire, Dalton, later appears in Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Surprise (1998) and is killed by the Judge.

What's My Line?: Part 2

S02E10 Episode aired 24 November 1997
  1. Marti Noxon said in her commentary for the season four DVD, that all the lines after Oz's compliment about Willow's smile were ad-libbed by Seth Green and Alyson Hannigan.
  2. Seth Green mentioned in an Ultimate TV talk that the line "I mock you with my monkey pants" was initially dreamed by Alyson Hannigan.
  3. Bianca Lawson commented on her accent during her stint on Buffy in an interview with SFX magazine: "I really hated that accent! I got the part, and I didn't originally have an accent. Then, literally the night before, they said, "What about a Jamaican accent?" So it's one of those things where, y'know, I just had to put it on tape, but I didn't have a chance to get comfortable with it. And the thing is, certain things - if you say it properly [in Jamaican patois], people don't really fully understand it, so they would change things. They'd say, "Well, say it like this" and it's like, "Would that be accurate in that accent though?" "It doesn't matter because no-one's going to understand you!" So different people were giving their interpretations of it. I was like "But everyone's going to think that I'm doing it wrong!" So personally, I wasn't happy with the accent!"
  4. Sarah Michelle Gellar improvised the line "I tink we might make him", where she mocks Kendra's accent, as Kendra's accent was a last-minute addition.
  5. At the beginning , Buffy tells Kendra, 'Back off, Pink Ranger!' Sophia Crawford, who is Sarah Michelle Gellar's stunt double, also doubled for the original Pink Ranger Amy Jo Johnson. Additionally, her husband, Jeff Pruitt, was the stunt choreographer for the first four seasons of Buffy the Vampire Slayer (1997) as well as Mighty Morphin Power Rangers (1993).
  6. Spike calls Buffy "Rebecca of Sunnyhell Farm", referencing the 1903 children's book Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm
  7. Xander says, "Okay, Mary Kay, time to...". Xander is referencing "Mary Kay Cosmetics" since the Bugman had been posing as Norman Pfister, a salesman from a cosmetics company.
  8. Buffy tells Kendra not to watch the in-flight movie if it has dogs or Chevy Chase in it. Sarah Michelle Gellar had an uncredited cameo in Funny Farm (1988), which starred Chase.
  9. This exchange was cut for length: -Kendra: "Your English is very odd, you know." -Buffy: "Yeah - it's something about being woken by an ax. Makes me talk all crazy."
  10. Oz says that his goal in life is to learn play an E flat diminished ninth chord. Despite his struggle, it's not an impossible chord on guitar. The Eb9- chord is formed by Eb-G-Bb-Db-Fb(=E).
  11. It is revealed there are forty-three churches in Sunnydale.
  12. Spike was originally to be killed at the end, but Joss Whedon decided to keep him and merely paralyze him.

Ted

S02E11 Episode aired 8 December 1997
  1. One of Alyson Hannigan's favorite, largely because of the participation of John Ritter.
  2. John Ritter was the first actor on the show to be billed as a Special Guest Star.
  3. This was shot during the Halloween holiday. Many members of the cast and crew came to the set in costume; Kristine Sutherland wore 1950s clothes like Ted's first wife, and Sarah Michelle Gellar came as Dorothy from The Wizard of Oz (1939), along with her dog, Toto.
  4. John Ritter claimed this influenced his understanding of his own step-daughter.
  5. First appearance of the set that will become the oft-used Magic Shop.
  6. Angel reveals that the contract on Buffy's life with the Order of Taraka has been cancelled, which is why they send no more assassins after her after the deaths of Octarus, Norman Pfister and Patrice.
  7. John Ritter's father, Tex Ritter, was also an actor and worked with Joss Whedon's father Tom Whedon.
  8. Xander notes at the beginning how quiet Sunnydale's undead population has been, but quickly stops to chastise himself for potentially jinxing their good fortune. Buffy and Willow criticized him for doing almost the exact same thing in Buffy the Vampire Slayer: School Hard (1997).
  9. Ted's cooking skills are an inside reference to John Ritter's famous sitcom Three's Company (1976) where his character is a chef.
  10. One of Willow's lines in the teaser was cut: "I'm just saying that if Tennille were in charge, she would have had the little captain hat".
  11. This is the last of the series to air in 1997.
  12. Xander mentions "Creature Feature". Dawn Summers later says "Feature Creature" in Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Tabula Rasa (2001).
  13. In the final fight between Buffy and Ted, both actors were ill. Sarah Michelle Gellar had flu and John Ritter was suffering from food poisoning.
  14. Ted and other characters use specific language to tease the audience about Ted's robot personality. Ted uses the phrase "I'm not wired that way" a couple of times, an employee at Ted's workplace describes him as a "machine", and Joyce tells Ted that every home "should have one of him," implying that he is like a house robot.
  15. The plot is similar to that of The Stepfather (1987), where a teenage girl suspects her new stepfather (who is obsessed with "old fashioned values") is a serial killer who marries women, and murders them when they fail to live up to his exceedingly high expectations.
  16. Starts with adults kissing (Ted and Joyce) and ends with adults kissing (Giles and Jenny).
  17. At 42:57 Buffy says to Willow, "You're supposed to use your powers for good". Later in the series, Willow struggles with exactly that problem.
  18. Foreshadows Faith killing a human in season 3. Faith, unlike Buffy, hides her remorse for taking a human life.
  19. Ted is the first human-impersonating robot to appear in the series. The theme will be reused many times.

Bad Eggs

S02E12 Episode aired 12 January 1998
  1. For most of the kissing scenes between Buffy and Angel, Sarah Michelle Gellar and David Boreanaz would prank each other by eating onions, garlic, cheese and the like to force each other to kiss with stinky breath.
  2. Contains the first direct reference that Willow is Jewish. Although, there is a hint with her last name, Rosenberg, though not automatically. Meaning "Mountain of roses" in German, it may be (mostly) or not a Jewish surname.
  3. A promotional poster for Ally McBeal (1997) is shown in the mall. Numerous Buffy alumni would appear on the show most notably Armin Shimerman, Mark Metcalf and Sarah Hagan.
  4. The physical relationship between Buffy and Angel is intensifying, foreshadowing the events of Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Surprise (1998) and Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Innocence (1998).
  5. Lyle and Tector Gorch were named after the characters played by Warren Oates and Ben Johnson in The Wild Bunch (1969).
  6. Cordy refers to a girl 'having sex in a car'. If she is referring to herself as it is implied then she is the first of the younger Scoobies we know to have lost their virginity.
  7. Angel explains to Buffy that, as a vampire, he can never have kids and asks her where she sees herself in 5 years. Ironically, about 4 years from this moment, Angel will miraculously have a son after all.
  8. Angel says to Buffy "you don't care what happens in a year? five years from now?" In a year's time, Angel will leave Buffy and in 5 years the Hellmouth and Sunnydale will be destroyed.
  9. Buffy expresses horror at the prospect of becoming a single mother. With Joyce's death in season 5, she becomes just that to Dawn.
  10. Introduces the Gorch brothers, Lyle and Tector, as minor villains. Tector is eaten, but Lyle returns in Season 3 Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Homecoming (1998).
  11. In one of the cemetery make out scenes, the camera pans away from Buffy & Angel, and the inscription on the headstone reads, "In loving memory", a dark foreshadowing of the events soon to come.
  12. Bears a strong resemblance to Are You Afraid of the Dark? (1990) Are You Afraid of the Dark?: The Tale of the Hatching (1993). Both feature students being controlled by some kind of monster to care for its eggs.

Surprise

S02E13 Episode aired 19 January 1998
  1. Mercedes McNab was to appear as Harmony Kendall. However, due to time constraints and the focus on the Buffy/Angel and the Spike/Drusilla/Judge story lines, her scenes were cut out.
  2. Brian Thompson plays "The Judge". In Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Welcome to the Hellmouth (1997) and Buffy the Vampire Slayer: The Harvest (1997) , he played the vampire Luke.
  3. In giving Buffy a Claddagh ring, and remarking that it is a tradition of his people, it suggests Angel is originally from Ireland.
  4. Begins a tradition of Buffy birthdays gone awry, although Buffy does not celebrate her birthday on-screen in the final season. Her birthday takes place in Season Three (Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Helpless (1999)), Season Four (Buffy the Vampire Slayer: A New Man (2000)), Season Five Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Blood Ties (2001) and Season Six (Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Older and Far Away (2002)), when Spike suggests Buffy to not celebrate her birthday anymore.
  5. Willow mentions that Buffy had once told her to seize the day. She is referring to Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Welcome to the Hellmouth (1997) where Buffy told her that and she did leading to her getting kidnapped by a vampire named Thomas.
  6. This scene was cut for length: Jenny: "I guess it makes sense. I mean, all of Buffy's senses are heightened. Why should her intuition be different?"Giles: "Precisely. It's not unheard-of for the Slayer to start having prophetic dreams and visions as she approaches adulthood."Jenny: "Adulthood? Buffy's seventeen tomorrow, Giles. Don't rush her."Giles: "I'm not the one rushing her. While I loathe to say it, the fact is, the Slayer rarely lives into her mid-twenties. It follows that she'd exhibit signs of maturity early on. Her whole life cycle is accelerated."Jenny: "Still, you should be careful about treating her like a grown-up. Like-this thing with Angel. Have you even talked to her about it?"Giles: "I...I suppose I try not to pry."Jenny: "Maybe you should, a little. The way she talks, it's clear she has intense feelings for him."Giles: "Well, yes. They're friends..."Jenny: "They're more than friends, and you know it."Giles: "I'm not her father, Jenny."Jenny: "She looks up to you. She'll never actually say that, but she does. And I just think, at her age, it's easy to get in over your head. She could make some bad choices here. Trust me on this one."Giles: "I'll keep an eye to it. Right now, I'm worried enough trying to think of the right birthday present."
  7. The hole leading to the sewers created in the factory does not appear. Apparently, it appears to have been fixed.
  8. Together with Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Innocence (1998), the show transitioned from Mondays to Tuesdays, where it would remain. This was the last to be played on a Monday.
  9. The episode won an Emmy Award for Outstanding Makeup for a Series.
  10. The Jenny Calendar character was not originally intended to be a Romani, that plotline arose out of a need to further explain and deepen the curse storyline.
  11. In Buffy's dream, Willow says "L'hippo a piqué ton pantalon," which means "The hippo stole your pants" in French, while speaking to the monkey. This refers back to her conversation with Oz near the end of Buffy the Vampire Slayer: What's My Line?: Part 2 (1997), in which, intentionally absurd, he wonders if the hippo animal cracker is jealous of the fact that the monkey is the only animal cracker with pants, as well as asserting that "All monkeys are French."
  12. This features Rupert Giles's second visit to the Bronze, a rare occurrence in the series.
  13. Buffy's birthday gift from Angel, her Claddagh ring, not only comes to signify her lost love for the rest of season two, but also plays an important part in the beginning of season three. First as a resonant antecedent to Scott Hope's impromptu gift, and then as a mystical focus for Angel's return from Acathla's hell dimension.
  14. The first time that Angel loses his soul. It will be restored in Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Becoming: Part 2 (1998) by Willow as her first spell but he would purposefully lose it again in Angel: Awakening (2003). Willow would restore it once again in Angel: Orpheus (2003).
  15. Oz finds out about the supernatural world.
  16. Several important plot-lines occur. Oz and Willow have their first date, commencing one of the longest relationships on the show. Angel is transformed into Angelus, becoming the Big Bad of season two. Spike and Drusilla are established as worthy adversaries, allowing for Spike's eventual return appearances in seasons three and four, and for his permanent membership as regular cast for seasons five, six and seven.
  17. Spike is shown to be severely injured from his ordeal in the church while Drusilla is uninjured and cured. Its shown that Spike's injuries from the organ falling on him and the fire are such that even weeks later he still has burns on his face and is confined to a wheelchair as well as being notably weak. It takes him until Buffy the Vampire Slayer: I Only Have Eyes for You (1998) for him to be able to secretly leave the wheelchair and until Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Becoming: Part 2 (1998) for him to be shown to be fully recovered.
  18. This marks the first time that Angel puts the full weight of the Gypsy Curse to the test and the first time he has experienced true blissful love as a human and as a demon.

Innocence

S02E14 Episode aired 20 January 1998
  1. This is Joss Whedon's favorite Buffy.
  2. Sometimes Buffy the Vampire Slayer (1997) writers include in-jokes in their scripts. The shooting script contained the following direction: "A couple of soldiers pass. Xander suavely nods to them. They nod back and pass without comment, because they are extras." When Xander and Cordelia make out, the directions were: "They haben der big smoochen."
  3. Asked about his decision to turn Angel evil, Joss Whedon said that he feels it was necessary to keep the story fresh. Although the fan base wanted Buffy and Angel to be together romantically, Whedon said "What people want is not what they need."
  4. The rocket launcher was originally going to be a tank, but that turned out to be too expensive.
  5. The explosion of the rocket actually begins slightly before impacting the Judge. Joss Whedon'' commentary explains it as necessary because "We had to mask the rocket bouncing off of the statue."
  6. It is established that Sunnydale has its own army base, which will reappear later.
  7. Kristine Sutherland told the BBC that this was her favorite as a fan.
  8. It is revealed that there are various degrees of evil in vampires. Angelus does not have enough humanity for the Judge to burn him, but Dalton had enough, earlier.
  9. This is the first instance where Xander reveals he has retained military knowledge after the events of Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Halloween (1997).
  10. This exchange was cut for length: Gypsy Man: "You! Evil one!"Angelus: "Evil one? Oh, man, now I've got hurt feelings."-Gypsy Man: "What do you want?" Angelus: "A whole lot. Got a lot of lost time to make up for. Say, I guess that's kind of your fault, isn't it? You Gypsy types, you go and curse people, you really don't care who gets hurt. Of course, you did give me an escape clause, so I gotta thank you for that."Gypsy Man: "You are an abomination. The day you stop suffering for your crimes, you are no longer worthy of a human soul."Angelus: "Well, that pesky little critter's all gone. So we can get down to business... Don't worry, it won't hurt a bit...after the first hour."
  11. Drusilla refers to Angel as "Angel" rather than Angelus. In Angel (1999), Drusilla almost always refers to him as "Angelus".
  12. This marked the show's permanent move from Mondays to Tuesdays. As a result of the switch, it originally aired just one day after Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Surprise (1998).
  13. The rocket launcher will be used once again in Buffy's attempts to kill Principal Wood in season seven Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Him (2002).
  14. Although Buffy gets the drop on Angel when she first learns he is a vampire (Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Angel (1997)), and tries to goad him into fighting her when she comes back from visiting her father in L.A. (Buffy the Vampire Slayer: When She Was Bad (1997)), it is not until he reverts to Angelus that they engage in their first actual battle with one another.
  15. The actors credited as "Teacher" and "Student" do not actually appear. The scene they were appeared, which revolved around Buffy running out of class after a series of dark thoughts about having sex the night before, was cut due to time.
  16. The episode won an Emmy Award for Outstanding Makeup for a Series.
  17. Willow learns of Xander and Cordelia's relationship.
  18. This is the only time of the series to focus on the Big Bad.
  19. The Big Bad for season two has appeared and Buffy accidentally made it happen.
  20. After the Judge blows up, when Angel tries to escape the mall, a poster of the movie Fallen (1998) can be seen. Keeping the theme of the episode, the film is also about how a demonic entity makes people behave differently, and also states has Angel "fallen" to evil.
  21. Filming had to be halted for 25 minutes after Sarah Michelle Gellar's big crying scene for the actress to compose herself.
  22. During Angel and Buffy's first lovemaking scene, Joss Whedon and sound editor Cindy Rabideau provided the heavy breathing, because they were too embarrassed to ask Sarah Michelle Gellar and David Boreanaz to do it.
  23. The woman whom Angel kills shortly after losing his soul is played by Sophia Crawford, who was the stunt double for Sarah Michelle Gellar for the show's first four seasons. This was the only time on the show when her face was shown (intentionally).
  24. After Angel turns, he is shown with his Claddagh ring on his right hand, heart pointed to his finger tips. According to the symbolism, this means he is single and looking for love.
  25. Angel turning bad after sleeping with Buffy was one of the solutions the writing team came up with to counter the potential Sam and Diane fall-out that often happens in TV shows when two leading characters finally get together. (The general consensus is that Cheers (1982) took a nosedive once Sam and Diane became lovers.)
  26. When Angelus tells Spike "To kill this girl [Buffy]... you have to love her", it's foreshadowing the future relationship between Spike and Buffy later in the series.
  27. Reveals Jenny Calendar's past as a member of the Kalderash gypsy tribe that originally cursed Angelus with his soul in 1898, as well as her ulterior motives for relocating to Sunnydale.

Phases

S02E15 Episode aired 27 January 1998
  1. Buffy the Vampire Slayer (1997) was one of the first TV series to cause quite a stir on the Internet with numerous fan sites and message boards springing up. This is acknowledged when Buffy stops in front of a noticeboard. There's a small note on the board thanking all of the Buffy fans at the official website.
  2. In the opening scene, Oz remarks on the moving eyes of the cheerleader trophy, a reference to Amy's evil mother, who was a former cheerleader, and was trapped in that statue in Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Witch (1997).
  3. This is the first time Xander stakes a vampire unaided. He previously staked his best friend Jesse McNally in Buffy the Vampire Slayer: The Harvest (1997) but it was an accident aided by a panicked patron of the Bronze.
  4. Jack Conley appears as the werewolf hunter. He also appears as Sahjhan in seasons three and five in spin-off series Angel (1999).
  5. When Cain rips on Buffy for letting the werewolf get away, saying "You know, sis, if that thing harms anyone, it's going to be on your pretty little head", it is a reflection of Buffy's responsibility for all the people killed by Angel since she had him in her power in their last fight, but felt unable to kill him. Specifically, at the very moment Cain says that line, Angel is elsewhere killing Buffy's schoolmate, Theresa.
  6. The first appearance of Werewolves in the Buffyverse.
  7. Xander says to Oz "I know what it's like to crave the taste of freshly killed meat. To be taken over by these uncontrollable urges..." Thus, he inadvertently admits that he remembers being possessed by a hyena spirit (Buffy the Vampire Slayer: The Pack (1997)). Buffy calls him on it, and he admits "I said I didn't remember anything about that," but Buffy fails to pursue it.
  8. During self-defense class this exchange was cut: Xander: (to Cordelia) "Be gentle with me."Cordelia: (to Willow) "You're first. I wouldn't want to be accused of taking your place in line."Willow: "Oh, I think you pushed your way to the front long before this."Cordelia: "Hey, I can't help it if I get the spotlight just because some people blend into the background."Willow: "Well, maybe some people could see better if you weren't standing on the auction block, shaking your wares."Cordelia: "Sorry, we haven't all perfected that phony 'girl next door' bit."Willow: "You could be the girl next door, too. If Xander lived next to a brothel!"
  9. Gib Cain claims to kill werewolves so he can sell their pelts. In Angel: Unleashed (2003), Jacob Crane intends to serve his guests a live Lycanthropus Exterus werewolf, a rare breed of werewolf that walks on its hind legs, which is supposedly not common in North America, and reverts to the human form upon death (hence being served alive), unlike the "common" werewolves like Oz.
  10. In Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Welcome to the Hellmouth (1997), Buffy is able to tell from the briefest of glances that the vampire victim will not "rise again," in Giles' words. But in the funeral home, Buffy has no idea that Theresa has been turned into a vampire until she actually rises, despite getting a good, long look at the body. This possibly shows that Buffy, although being very tough and strong, has little or no proficiency with magic or the metaphysical, as opposed to Giles himself and especially Willow.
  11. This is the only time Oz's house is seen.
  12. In an essay exploring the feminist ethics of Buffy, Shannon Craigo-Snell uses this as an example of how the series examines the threat of sexual violence facing women and girls as a "problematic background against which women attempt to have satisfying relationships with men." Craigo-Snell points out that this threat is embodied by the character of Larry, who sexually harasses Buffy (and other girls) during a gym class focused on self-defense, and the werewolf-hunter Cain, who says Buffy's failure to capture the werewolf is "what happens when a woman tries to do a man's job." This theme is made explicit when Giles describes werewolves as "potent, extreme representation of our inborn animalistic traits", predatory and aggressive with no conscience, and Buffy responds, "In other words, your typical male." Anyway, other than Oz (who has conscience), the main werewolves in Buffy/Angel are Veruca (no conscience) and Nina (conscience), both female.
  13. The background character of Larry is seen again. This is his second appearance; he will reappear a few times until the Season 3 finale.
  14. Cordelia implies that she has had sexual intercourse (claiming that her father falsely thought she was still a "good girl"). Since Cordelia was offered up as a virgin sacrifice to Machida early on in Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Reptile Boy (1997), she must have lost her virginity at some point this season.
  15. Joss Whedon originally didn't know whether it would be Willow or Xander who turned out gay. Xander's conversation with Larry could have been slightly foreshadowing had Xander been chosen to be gay. As it is, this is not the first instance in the series where there is the hint of doubt about Xander's sexuality.
  16. This is the first of only three Oz-centric shows. Marti Noxon states in the DVD commentary that this is viewed as the first in a "Willow/Oz Trilogy." Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Wild at Heart (1999) is the second, with Buffy the Vampire Slayer: New Moon Rising (2000) as the last with the final actual appearance of Oz (his official last appearance is in Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Restless (2000), though he is only in a dream).
  17. Oz becomes a werewolf, a defining characteristic of his character for the remainder of the series. He was turned into a werewolf by a bite from his younger cousin who was in human form at the time.
  18. Oz sarcastically tells Larry that Willow is secretly an evil mastermind. Much later in the series, Willow really does become an evil mastermind; she was the "Big Bad" (main villain) of the latter part of season 6.
  19. Willow and Oz finally become a couple, their love strong enough to withstand the discovery of Oz's condition. The Scooby Gang have their own special powers and problems that will be explored later. Xander remains obsessed with Willow, though, setting the stage for Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Lovers Walk (1998). Angelus continues to torment Buffy, strengthening her resolve to kill him.
  20. In the Buffyverse Oz, aka Daniel Osborne, is a Werewolf played by Seth Green. In It (1990), Seth Green plays Richie Tozier who is actually afraid of a Werewolf chasing him.

Bewitched, Bothered and Bewildered

S02E16 Episode aired 10 February 1998
  1. When casting the love spell for Xander, Amy asks the goddess Diana to make Cordelia submit to his will. In Roman mythology, Diana (or her Greek counterpart, Artemis) is the goddess of the hunt, the moon, and parts of nature, but not love. The goddess of love would be Venus (Aphrodite). Furthermore, Diana is sworn to be a maiden forever and followers of her also swear off men.
  2. Nicholas Brendon claims this as one of his favorites, and found it hard not to laugh while filming the seduction scenes.
  3. In the beginning, Harmony taunts Cordelia by asking when she and Xander are going to start wearing matching outfits so she can puke. At the end, Cordelia and Xander are in color-coordinated outfits.
  4. An X-Men 2099 poster is seen on the wall next to Xander's bed above his nightstand. Joss Whedon is an avid X-Men fan, citing Kitty Pryde as inspiration for the Buffy character. He also wrote a 24-issue run for Astonishing X-Men in 2008.
  5. In the October 1, 1999 issue of Entertainment Weekly, producer Gareth Davies states this as his favorite.
  6. Buffy receives a long box full of roses with a card that says "Soon". In I Know What You Did Last Summer (1997), Sarah Michelle Gellar's character awakens to find the same message written on her mirror in lipstick.
  7. Tamara Braun, who plays one of the frenzied girls, appeared as the vampire Tara in Season Two Buffy the Vampire Slayer: When She Was Bad (1997).
  8. The song which Dingoes Ate My Baby played, "Pain", can also be heard performed in Buffy's house in Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Dead Man's Party (1998).
  9. The difference in the personalities of Angelus and unsouled Spike is ably demonstrated by their choice of valentine gifts.
  10. While Spike is still weakened from his ordeal in the church, he is starting to noticeably heal with a reduction in his facial burns and an increase in strength.
  11. First time the name "Alpert" is shown on the tomb. This is named after producer Richard Alpert. The tomb can be seen again throughout the series, in Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Killed by Death (1998), Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Becoming: Part 1 (1998), Buffy the Vampire Slayer: The Zeppo (1999), Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Something Blue (1999), Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Superstar (2000), Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Real Me (2000), and Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Grave (2002).
  12. Below the Etnies sticker in Xander's room, a sticker reading "SHEEP" is shown. A "SHEEP" sticker can also be seen inside of Cordelia's locker. This could be tied to the women who follow Xander like sheep, as well as Cordelia's line to Harmony at the end. However, it could also be another band sticker. It is also shown in Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Becoming: Part 2 (1998) on a locker behind Buffy and again during the season 4 finale Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Restless (2000) in Xander's dream inside the ice cream van and on a locker.
  13. Cordelia leaves the Cordettes and joins the Scooby Gang.
  14. The first use of the term "Big Bad" in the quote "the big bad thing in the dark". However, the term would later be shortened to "Big Bad" in Season 3 Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Gingerbread (1999). This phrase will be used repeatedly throughout the series to describe the major villains, especially those involved in a season's main conflict. Spike also tends to call himself "the Big Bad" in later seasons.
  15. Oz's band, Dingoes Ate My Baby, performs on-stage for the first time since Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Inca Mummy Girl (1997).
  16. Drusilla becomes one more supernatural female to be attracted to Xander, joining Natalie French and Ampata Gutierrez.
  17. Jenny makes two attempts to apologize and make up with Giles after the events in Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Innocence (1998).
  18. Despite Cordelia's previously stated desire to keep her relationship with Xander secret, she has officially revealed it by now.
  19. Amy asks Buffy "Bad breakup?", to which Buffy replies "Believe me when I say 'uh-huh'". Buffy is of course referring to Angel losing his soul in Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Surprise (1998).
  20. Xander demonstrates very mild carpentry skills for the first time, when he boards up the door of Buffy's basement to keep the rabid girls away.
  21. Cordelia and Joyce meet in Buffy the Vampire Slayer: School Hard (1997) and Joyce greets her by name.
  22. Buffy was turned into a rat to enable Sarah Michelle Gellar to have the time off to perform on Saturday Night Live (1975).
  23. Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Passion (1998) was originally to be shown, but the creators had to concoct something in a hurry to accommodate Sarah Michelle Gellar's absence for filming Saturday Night Live (1975). Joss Whedon claims, "We wrote it in a matter of days. We were like 'We have to think of something that will turn Sarah into a rat for four days.'" Sarah shot all of her scenes first before she left to film "SNL".
  24. The scene in which Xander and Cordelia are lying on the floor, attacked by the crazy mob, is part of a flashback scene in Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Him (2002). Xander refers to the events as "good times", even though he clearly expresses it now as a nightmare.
  25. Amy will once again cast the Rat Transformation Spell to turn herself into a rat to escape in Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Gingerbread (1999). She remains that way until season six when Willow finally manages to reverse the spell.
  26. A little of Willow's dark, murderous side is shown. This persona is further developed during season six, from Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Bargaining: Part 1 (2001) to Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Wrecked (2001) and Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Seeing Red (2002) to Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Grave (2002).
  27. After Xander sees the spell has no affect on Cordelia and enters the library to find Buffy flirting with him for the first time, he seems quite content to forget about Cordy and pursue Buffy, showing that she is his first choice and foreshadowing his break-up with Cordelia in Season Three.
  28. Amongst the female mob pursuing Xander and Cordelia is the Sunnydale High lunch lady who will recur in Buffy the Vampire Slayer: I Only Have Eyes for You (1998) and play a much larger role in Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Earshot (1999).
  29. Amy Madison, who first appeared in season one's Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Witch (1997), will have a bigger role to play in season six.

Passion

S02E17 Episode aired 24 February 1998
  1. In an interview with the BBC, Anthony Head says this is his favorite , "because it was beautifully shot and a beautifully written one."
  2. A huge fan of this series, singer Ed Sheeran sampled the track "Remembering Jenny" in his song "Afire Love". This show, itself, inspired the song.
  3. In classic Buffyverse style, the writers and producers of the show retire the factory set by utterly destroying it.
  4. We learn that Willow's father is called Ira and is quite strictly Jewish. We also learn that she is the only girl in her family.
  5. In the American version, Angelus incorrectly says that the sign in front of the school, in Latin, is Formatia trans sicere educatorum, which means "Enter all ye who seek knowledge". In the Italian version, the correct line is used: Ingredit vos qui scienses querites.
  6. Jonathan and another student come to the library to borrow books, the only people other than Owen in Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Never Kill a Boy on the First Date (1997) to do so.
  7. Jenny wonders how Angelus got in her classroom, and he quotes about the school's sign in Latin, which translates roughly to "Enter all ye who seek knowledge." Jenny knows that vampires do not need invitations into public places like schools (seen in Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Prophecy Girl (1997) and Buffy the Vampire Slayer: School Hard (1997)) and was just curious how he sneaked into her classroom without her noticing. Angelus was making a joke when he claimed the school's sign invited him in.
  8. First time Angel's sketching skills can be seen.
  9. Willow refers to Giles as a "bookman" to Buffy. Winifred Burkle would refer to another watcher, Wesley Wyndam-Pryce, as "bookman" in Angel: A Hole in the World (2004).
  10. During the scene in which Buffy and Giles are standing beside Jenny Calendar's grave, the voice singing the melody is that of Anthony Head.
  11. There was a lot of debate as to how Jenny Calendar should die. Joss Whedon vetoed the idea of her being bitten, because he wanted to make absolutely sure there was no chance at all of her coming back as a vampire. When the decision was made to have Angelus snap her neck, there was more debate, this time as to whether or not Angelus should be wearing his human or vampire face when he does it. It was eventually decided that he should be in full vampire mode. Whedon thought that if he did it with his human face, it would be too disturbing, and the audience would not want to see this person as someone Buffy could still love.
  12. In the scene where Buffy and Willow receive the news of Jenny's death from Giles, the crew hooked up the phones so the actors could actually talk.
  13. According to Joss Whedon, Jenny Calendar's death serves notice to fans, first, that no one is safe, death is scary and real, and second, that Angel is not "just a little evil," he's not "grouchy," he's truly evil and Buffy needs to address the situation. The series creator also jokes that it is a message to the actors: "Be very good, or I'll kill you."
  14. When Angel is harassing Jenny in the computer room, she stands near the door. There is a sign that says "Remember to back up your files." Angel has changed one of the letters to read "Remember to hack up your files."
  15. The tenor who recorded the piece of Opera used when Giles discovers Jenny's body wasn't even aware that his performance had been used on the show until it aired. One of his daughters told him. Since the recording company owned the rights, no one had informed him, but thankfully, he was delighted it was included.
  16. Robia Scott lamented at her character being killed just as the show was getting popular.
  17. Willow mentions that, every Christmas, she goes over to Xander's house to watch the Charlie Brown Christmas special and, giggling, says that Xander dances the "Snoopy dance". This will be touched upon again in Season 5's Buffy the Vampire Slayer: The Replacement (2000) when Xander does this dance on-screen to prove his identity.
  18. Originally, Angel was supposed to kill Oz, but his character had a lot of potential so the decision was made to kill Jenny instead.
  19. When Buffy and Willow learn about Jenny's death, this is the dialogue you can't hear: Willow: "So was it horrible?" Buffy: "It wasn't too horrible." [phone rings] "Hello?" Giles: "Buffy?" Buffy: "Giles! Hey, we finished the spe-" Giles: "Jenny... Ms. Calender... She's been killed." Buffy: "What...?" Giles "It was Angel." [Buffy drops the phone]. Willow: "Buffy?" [She picks up the phone] "Giles?" Giles: "Willow. Angel's killed Jenny." Willow: "What? No... Oh... No..." Joyce: "Willow! My God, Buffy! What's wrong? Has something happened?"
  20. Although Jenny is killed, Robia Scott makes two further guest appearances. In the the season finale Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Becoming: Part 2 (1998), where Drusilla hypnotizes Giles into thinking she's Jenny and again in Season 3's Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Amends (1998), as a manifestation of the First Evil, intending to eradicate Angel's soul.
  21. The Scooby Gang finally finds a way to uninvite vampires. Uninvitation spells are performed at Buffy's and Willow's houses and on Cordelia's car. Presumably, Angel was never invited into Xander's house. It's clear that at some point in the past Angel was invited into Giles' apartment, as Buffy gives Giles the materials he needs to perform the uninvite spell at his place. Unfortunately, Giles didn't have the opportunity to do the spell before Angelus was able to sneak Jenny Calendar's body inside. Giles does perform the uninvite spell afterwards, off-screen, since Angel needs to be re-invited in the third season in Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Amends (1998).
  22. True to Whedonesque form, just as certain characters are about to find happiness or have only just found it-in this case, Jenny and Giles's reconciliation-tragedy strikes in the most unfortunate of ways, leaving said characters worse off emotionally than before.
  23. This sets the stage for Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Becoming: Part 1 (1998) and Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Becoming: Part 2 (1998) where Buffy and Willow accidentally rediscover Jenny's disk and Willow manages to restore Angel's soul.
  24. The plot scene of Giles' personal attack on a Big Bad is again seen in Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Tough Love (2001) when Willow attacks Glory, without Buffy's knowledge, for attacking Tara. Both Willow and Giles are almost killed by the Big Bad, only to be saved by Buffy.
  25. Jenny's death finally gives Buffy the resolve she needs to kill Angel(us).
  26. The floppy disc containing the Ritual of Restoration will not be discovered by the Scoobies until Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Becoming: Part 1 (1998).

Killed by Death

S02E18 Episode aired 3 March 1998
  1. This script was originally planned for the first season and then before Angel became evil. It evolved into its aired form.
  2. Willow's fear of frogs is brought up when she pretends to have frogs crawling over her to permit Buffy to escape.
  3. It has been conjectured that Der Kindestod may have been inspired by Freddy Krueger, the antagonist of A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984). However, Joss Whedon says that this character was "based on a 'this thing creeped me out as a kid' thing," as with many of the monsters on the show. In general, the monsters were suggested by the vague bogeyman figures that bedevil many children.
  4. The flashback scenes take place in 1989.
  5. The book on the cover of which Cordelia finds the image of Der Kindestod also contains the passage on an unnamed demon belonging to the Brotherhood of Seven that Buffy and Sid defeated in Buffy the Vampire Slayer: The Puppet Show (1997).
  6. The title is taken from a Motörhead song.
  7. This is the first of the three times Buffy is hospitalized. The others being Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Graduation Day: Part 2 (1999) and Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Villains (2002).
  8. Samples of the score is used as the background music in the Buffy Season 2 DVD collection. The sound of Der Kindestod gasping is even heard in the menus.
  9. It is established that Buffy had a cousin called Celia who died when she was young, meaning that Buffy and Dawn have at least one aunt or uncle.
  10. We have our first glimpse of a younger Buffy played by Mimi Paley.
  11. Ryan is not the first young boy to peer at Buffy in the shadows. In Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Nightmares (1997), Buffy sees Billy, a local boy in a coma, walking around school.
  12. Xander's unresolved romantic feelings for Buffy, which began in Season 1, are brought up, first by Angelus when he attempts to enter Buffy's hospital room; Angelus taunts Xander about his love for Buffy and how it must irk him that Angel took Buffy's virginity. An annoyed Cordelia later tells Xander that his loyalty to Buffy is not attractive (his later love interest, Anya, will make similar complaints) and how she knows that he took friendship with Buffy as way of being close to her, since she didn't see him in a romantic way. This may explain Xander's anger and frustration over Buffy's romantic choices throughout the series, as ordinary guys like him don't seem to "do it" for her.

I Only Have Eyes for You

S02E19 Episode aired 21 April 1998
  1. The show has dealt with many disturbing subjects, but this is the first one that has prompted a public-service announcement. Following the end of the final act, Sarah Michelle Gellar did a voice-over on the dangers of teenage suicide.
  2. "The Mansion" where Spike, Druscilla, and Angelus now reside after the destruction of their factory hideout was designed by Frank Lloyd Wright. The mansion will be a major setting and the residence of Angel in the next season.
  3. After Willow gives Giles the rose quartz necklace that was Jenny's, you can hear the song "Remembering Jenny" being played.
  4. Grace and James talk about a book Grace has lent him. The book is A Farewell to Arms, by Ernest Hemingway. It is about a teenaged World War I soldier who has a romance with an older woman-an army nurse. The relationship ends after she dies in a fashion that he blames himself for. It is based on events that happened to Hemingway.
  5. Marti Noxon said that prior to working on the series, she had written several times about ghosts, which for her are figurative expressions of the need for "repentance and second chances", drawing on her own family background. "I realize that I was constantly telling the story of my family and fears," she says. Noxon was influenced in her storytelling by the movies Poltergeist (1982) and Truly Madly Deeply (1990).
  6. In Angel: Waiting in the Wings (2002), when Angel and Cordelia are possessed by the spirits of lovers past, Angel states that he's been possessed by ghostly lovers before, referring to this.
  7. This exchange from the script was cut: Cordelia: "Okay. So what's up with Buffy?"Xander: "How many times do we have to go over this? Nothing's up with Buffy. We're just good friends..."Cordelia: "No, I mean, what's up with Buffy? Like, is she okay?"Xander: "Sorry. I'm not used to you addressing subjects not directly related to ... you. She's fine. I guess. Why?"Cordelia: "She only blew off Ben Straley - the most eligible hunk in town. He's totally rad and his father owns a department store. I mean, he's the guy I'd be going out with if I wasn't so obviously brain damaged. No offense."Xander: "Oh no. Why would I be offended?"Cordelia: "Anyway. Ben told Lynette, who told Charity, that Buffy wouldn't even give him the time of day."Xander: "Good for her. She's providing much needed life experience for the rejection-deprived."Cordelia: "The guilt thing's just getting a little old, you know. Everybody's told her what happened to Angel isn't her fault."Xander: "Yeah. Everybody except the one guy she needs to hear it from."
  8. The title is from the 1934 song of the same title by composer Harry Warren and lyricist Al Dubin.
  9. The singer at the Bronze in the opening scenes, Angie Hart, also appeared in Firefly: Heart of Gold (2003) singing "Amazing Grace."
  10. Grace is the fourth Sunnydale High teacher killed in the series, though is chronologically the first.
  11. Meredith Salenger's name is misspelled in the opening credits. It reads Meredith Salinger.
  12. The flashback scenes take place in Sunnydale in 1955.
  13. The song "I Only Have Eyes for You" is also briefly featured in The Grudge 2 (2006) theatrical trailer, also starring Sarah Michelle Gellar.
  14. Joss Whedon said in an interview with TV Guide that he got the idea for an Angel (1999) spin-off from the scenes where David Boreanaz (Angelus) is possessed by a female spirit.
  15. The scene when ghosts of Grace and James take over Angel and Buffy's bodies was filmed first with Meredith Salenger and Christopher Gorham playing Grace and James. This was so that the film could be watched and mimicked by Sarah Michelle Gellar and David Boreanaz when it came their turn to film it, Gellar playing the male character and Boreanaz playing the female one.
  16. This appears to be the beginning of Willow's interest in witchcraft, as she admits that she has started looking through Jenny's files and websites on the subject. This later leads her to having enough knowledge to perform the Ritual of Restoration, something which even Giles is unable to complete, and foreshadows her later career as a powerful witch.
  17. It's revealed here that both Principal Snyder and the Sunnydale police chief are aware about the Hellmouth's existence. It is also revealed (to the viewers) that Mayor Wilkins and the entire city counsel hired Snyder to act as a guardian of sorts, mainly in keeping it under wraps in the public eye.
  18. Drusilla notices jasmine growing outside of the new place that Angelus, Spike and herself have moved to. Angel will live here for the rest of his time in Sunnydale. Jasmine also grows outside of the Hyperion hotel which is home to Angel and the Angel Investigations team in the spin-off show Angel (1999) season 2-4. This particular jasmine leads to the naming of deity and season 4 character Jasmine.
  19. When Buffy and Angel are possessed by James and Grace, respectively, Grace says to James that they should break up so that James can have a normal life. This parallels Angel and Buffy's relationship towards the end of season 3 in that Angel leaves Buffy so that she can have a normal life.
  20. Spike, who, ever since Buffy the Vampire Slayer: What's My Line?: Part 2 (1997), has been confined to a wheelchair with a burned face, is shown to secretly be fully healed of his injuries after several months. The burns on his face have finally disappeared, and he is able to get out of the wheelchair at the end. He keeps it to himself, though, waiting for a better time to strike back.
  21. When Willow is laying out her plan for dealing with the haunting, she suggests "the only solution is the final solution." Xander responds "nuke the school? I like that." In Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Graduation Day: Part 2 (1999), the gang will blow up the school to defeat the Mayor in demon form.
  22. This episode foreshadows Buffy killing Angel at the end of season 2 and her guilt and remorse at the start of season 3.
  23. The first mention of the Mayor, who will be the big bad for season 3.

Go Fish

S02E20 Episode aired 5 May 1998
  1. Wentworth Miller's first screen credit.
  2. Originally intended to be placed before Angel loses his soul. Accordingly, Angel is barely in it.
  3. Marti Noxon has said in several interviews that this was written to show how athletes who use steroids ruin their bodies.
  4. During filming, Charles Cyphers accidentally got hit on the head with a piece of pipe. Although Cyphers was not seriously injured, Sarah Michelle Gellar "snapped to it," and angrily lectured the crew about the mishap.
  5. This is the last time the opening prologue is used.
  6. Shane West makes an uncredited cameo as one of the teen boys in the steam room.
  7. This features one of the most notable examples of role reversal in the series' horror genre: Gage (a strapping and muscular male athlete) asks Buffy (a petite, sexy blonde girl) to walk him home because he's afraid.
  8. This is the first written by David Fury. It is also a collaboration with his wife, Elin Hampton.
  9. This is the first of two times where Willow interrogates Jonathan, the other being Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Earshot (1999).
  10. This is the first of three times where a beach is used, the others being Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Anne (1998) and Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Buffy vs. Dracula (2000).
  11. The title Go Fish may have a double meaning here as the Scoobies "fish" for information in various ways.
  12. In 2014, a Details Magazine interviewer asked Wentworth Miller about his experience playing a "fish monster", his first onscreen acting job. Miller responded: "Honestly, I was completely out of my depth and doing whatever I could to keep up. They glued this prosthetic piece covered with scales to my chest. Then there was a piece over it that looked like human skin. I had to peel through the top layer to reveal the beast within. Deep into the third hour of this, the makeup artist says to me, 'We only have one of these pieces to tear through, so you need to get this right.' Hollywood can be a deeply strange place."
  13. When Gage is bitten by Angelus, enough of Gage's blood is sucked that Angelus spends quite a bit of time spitting it out. Later, in the locker room, Gage's neck is visible and there's no sign of a wound.
  14. The nurse and coach are the fifth and sixth members of the Sunnydale High faculty to die in the course of the series.
  15. Willow's line to Jonathan "You wanted revenge, didn't you? So you delved into the black arts and conjured up a hellbeast from the ocean's depths to wreak your vengeance" is ironic, and also foreshadows both of their futures. Dark Willow will seek vengeance on Jonathan for Tara's death and Jonathan, as a member of the Trio, will conjure demons.
  16. Jonathan, yet again being bullied, is setting up for his suicide attempt in Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Earshot (1999).
  17. Another hint at Xander's questionable sexuality, when he talks about men in the steam room.
  18. Cordelia and Xander joke about the fish creatures being like the Creature from the Black Lagoon, the title character from the 1954 movie, whom the fish creatures resemble. Later, Cordelia expresses openness to still dating Xander if he is turned into one of the creatures. Years later, the Oscar-winning film The Shape of Water (2017) features a similar-looking creature who finds love with a human woman. Its director, Guillermo del Toro, has said that part of the inspiration for the later film was a childhood disappointment that the Black Lagoon creature and the human woman did not end up together.

Becoming: Part 1

S02E21 Episode aired 12 May 1998
  1. Whistler was originally going to be Angel's sidekick for the Angel (1999) spin-off, however, Max Perlich could not commit.
  2. When Giles reveals he has an Orb of Thesulah, he mentions that he's been using it as a paperweight. This is a reference to Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Passion (1998), in which the magic shop owner tells Jenny that he usually sold the relics to tourists as New-Age paperweights.
  3. Buffy is revealed to have shared many personality traits with Cordelia before she became the Slayer. In Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Helpless (1999), Buffy remarks that one of the only things that make her grateful about becoming the Slayer is that it made her a better person. Cordelia will feel similarly about herself after coming into the Visions.
  4. Whistler jokingly says Buffy was "prettier than the last one"; the Master said the same thing about her when first meeting in Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Nightmares (1997).
  5. Buffy and Xander's fight about whether or not Angelus should be killed for his crimes is much like the one they'll have about Anya in Season 7's Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Selfless (2002), only the roles are reversed.
  6. When Liam is sired by Darla, it marks the first siring on camera.
  7. Introduces the concept of benevolent balancing demons in the form of Whistler.
  8. This line from Whistler was cut for length: There are three kinds of people that no one understands: geniuses, madmen, and guys that mumble."
  9. The flashback scenes take place in Galway, Ireland in 1753, England in 1860, Romania in October 1898, New York City in 1996 and Los Angeles in the spring of 1996.
  10. In a flashback, we see that Buffy misses the heart the first time she tries to stake a vampire. Buffy also tells Merrick she "Meant to pay for that lipstick" when asking him if he is from Bullock's, further linking her to Dawn. In Buffy the Vampire Slayer: All the Way (2001) Dawn tells Justin she "hasn't paid for lipstick since...forever."
  11. The details surrounding Angel's siring are further expounded upon in Angel: The Prodigal (2000).
  12. Specifically reveals that Angel became a vampire two hundred an forty-five years ago, and received his soul one hundred years prior.
  13. This is Darla's first appearance since her death in Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Angel (1997).
  14. A vampire burns up in indirect sunlight. Later and in Angel (1999), stronger and more direct sunlight becomes necessary for killing a vampire. Angel and Spike often survive in rooms that are more well lit than this one. They are also both able to drive cars and vehicles (conveniently screened) in plain daylight. The vampire may be newly sired, however, and thus comparatively weak to the older Spike and Angel.
  15. Spike ( James Marsters ) and Whistler ( Max Perlich ) also appeared in House on Haunted Hill (1999).
  16. Marks the second time a vampire is killed by immolation in sunlight. The first being the Anointed One in Buffy the Vampire Slayer: School Hard (1997). But it is the first one shown on-screen.
  17. First significant flashback sequences showing the history of certain characters.
  18. The episode won an Emmy Award for Outstanding Music Composition for a Series (Dramatic Underscore)
  19. While eating lunch Willow (Alyson Hannigan) admits she loves teaching. Hannigan will later star as a teacher in 'How I Met Your Mother'.
  20. The stuntwoman who was set on fire for the vampiric 'immolation-o-gram' is named Cindy Folkerson. She has been set on fire more times than any other stuntwoman in Hollywood.
  21. The Orb of Thesulah Giles is using as a paperweight is a reference to Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Passion (1998), when Ms. Calendar goes to buy the orb and the shop owner says that he sells a lot of those as paperweights.
  22. Drusilla kills Kendra in a manner reminiscent to the way The Master kills Buffy: by hypnotizing her.
  23. When Buffy realizes that Angelus has lured her away from the library so that Giles can be captured, he gleefully points out that "she falls for it every single time." This is a reference to Buffy the Vampire Slayer: When She Was Bad (1997), in which Buffy followed a deceptive lead allowing Willow and Giles to be kidnapped for the Master's restoration.
  24. Kendra's death leads to the calling of Faith Lehane who will play a major role in the show the next season, and recurs in seasons 4 and 7. Faith appears on Angel (1999) as well.
  25. When Willow proposes to try to perform the spell, Giles warns her that she may be opening a door that can't be easily closed. He's right. The discovery of Ms. Calendar's floppy disk sets Willow on a path of magic. She begins practicing seriously in season three, and grows steadily more powerful as the series progresses. Her magic becomes an important plot device in later seasons, particularly season six. Willow ultimately grows so powerful she is able to turn all Potential Slayers into fully-empowered Slayers.
  26. Giles' concerns about Willow tapping into the deeper magicks will prove well-founded in Season 6.
  27. In the flashback to 1996, when Buffy first meets Merrick, the words "Angeles United" can be seen over Merrick's shoulder on the school bus behind him. This is descriptive of Angel at that time (soul united with body) and portends the ending of the second part of this two-part series, with Angel regains his soul.

Becoming: Part 2

S02E22 Episode aired 19 May 1998
  1. At the end, during the "Mutant Enemy" logo, the monster walks across the screen and says, "Oh, I need a hug!", instead of his more common, "Grrr, Argh!!"
  2. When Buffy tells Angel to close his eyes at the climax, the song Close Your Eyes which is Buffy and Angel's love theme is playing on the soundtrack.
  3. Sarah Michelle Gellar and David Boreanaz practiced with sword fighting instructors and did some of the fighting themselves, but it's clear that the stunt doubles do most if not all of the wide shots.
  4. Spike's description of the end of the world as "goodbye Picadilly, farewell Leicester bloody Square" is a quote from the song "It's a Long Way to Tipperary" by Jack Judge and Harry Williams.
  5. When Buffy is standing in front of a locker talking to Xander in the beginning, a "SHEEP" sticker can be seen, explaining why "SHEEP" was written in Xander's room. This rids the theory that Xander was somehow mysteriously connected to the word sheep in some way, showing that it was just another band sticker. It first appeared in Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Bewitched, Bothered and Bewildered (1998) and showed up again in Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Where the Wild Things Are (2000) and Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Restless (2000).
  6. Even though this picks up from the end of Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Becoming: Part 1 (1998), Kendra's body is not seen.
  7. Spike ( James Marsters ) and Whistler ( Max Perlich ) also appeared in House on Haunted Hill (1999).
  8. Xander lies to Buffy regarding Willow's message to her, concealing that Willow is attempting to restore Angel's soul. The lie is briefly alluded to in the seventh season. But the group is distracted by Anya's return as a vengeance demon. Xander's lie is not mentioned again during the remainder of the series until it briefly became touched upon in season 7's Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Selfless (2002).
  9. In Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Becoming: Part 1 (1998), Darla tells Angel to "Close your eyes" before she sires him. Buffy tells him the same thing before skewering him and sending him to Hell.
  10. When Angelus regains his soul and becomes Angel again, he tells Buffy that he doesn't know what's going on or remember anything. This is explained by the flashback in Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Becoming: Part 1 (1998) when Angelus is first cursed by the Kalderash people. When his soul first re-enters his body, he is disoriented and cannot remember everything he did as a vampire. The Kalderash elder tells him it will all come back to him soon, and he will always suffer from the memories. The same thing happens when Willow restores his soul. He will have a brief phase before the memories come back, so he doesn't know that he killed Jenny or why they are there. Buffy stabs him before he remembers. The same pattern will occur later when he loses and regains his soul in season four of Angel.
  11. Spike and Joyce meet for the second time. She asks him if they have met before, and he tells her "You hit me with an ax one time, you know, 'Get the hell away from my daughter'", referencing their interaction at Parent-Teacher Night in Buffy the Vampire Slayer: School Hard (1997). Spike and Joyce later develop somewhat of a friendship. He is upset by her death, saying he respected her.
  12. Buffy invites Spike into her home, despite knowing that he is a vampire and has proven to be a dangerous enemy. He routinely takes full advantage of this invitation, particularly during Season 5, until Willow and Tara perform the de-invitation spell in Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Crush (2001). Buffy never bothers to have them do so until that point.
  13. Spike plays a role in "saving the world", marking the first alliance between him and Buffy.
  14. Xander says he loves Willow for the first time.
  15. Willow's restoration of Angel's soul marks the beginning of her interest in witchcraft, something that will eventually turn her into a very powerful witch. As Giles predicted in Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Becoming: Part 1 (1998), performing such a ritual did affect her on a deep level.
  16. Joyce finds out that Buffy is the Slayer. As revealed in Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Normal Again (2002), this is the second time Buffy told her about her Slayer destiny. The first time was after she slayed her first vampire, seen in the flashback in Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Becoming: Part 1 (1998). Her parents didn't believe her, and, concerned, have her committed to a mental asylum for a few weeks. This time Joyce believes her, as she witnessed Buffy dusting a vampire.
  17. Angel will not lose his soul again until Angel: Awakening (2003). However, this will be done on purpose in hopes of finding out information of The Beast. After his soul is stolen, Willow is summoned by Winifred Burkle in Angel: Orpheus (2003) as she is the only living person to restore Angel's soul. Despite some obstacles, Willow manages to free Angel's soul and curses him once more.
  18. It is revealed that Snyder is acting in league with the Mayor of Sunnydale. The Mayor will be the Big Bad of Season Three.
