    The One Where Emma Cries

    S09E02 Episode aired 3 October 2002

Although in this episode Joey claims to Ross he does not get the "quotation mark/inverted comas" gesture, in Season 8 in The One with Rachel's Date, when Ross refers to Kash as "an actor" accompanying it by the same gesture, Joey takes offense and - clearly understanding the gesture -makes it himself. It is one of the many inconsistencies in the friends' mythology and character bios.

    The One with the Pediatrician

    1. First appearance of Paul Rudd as Mike Hannigan.

    4. During an earlier episode in season 8 Phoebe is reading tea leaves for the group. Monica's leaves indicate either a job promotion or violent death. She states that as the head chef at her job she cannot get a promotion. In this episode she gets an offer for a new job at a better restaurant therefore she did earn a promotion.
    5. Ross and Monica's pediatrician's name is Dr. Gettleman. The is the also name of the pediatrician on I Love Lucy (1951)
    6. Paul Rudd has starred as the love interest to two of the three Green sisters. He starred as Jennifer Aniston (Rachel Green)'s husband in Wanderlust and Reese Witherspoon (Jill Green)'s love interest in Overnight Delivery.
    7. There are some highly plausible reasons why Rachel did not/would not ask her Dad to help her find a Pediatrician. Although Rachel's own father is a Doctor, he is a Cardiologist. He may well have colleagues in the Medical Profession that work as Pediatricians that Rachel didn't know about. Or she knew about Daddy's colleagues, and chose to avoid using Daddy's connections. Also, he has been described as "Depicted as being a very unpleasant and also rather amoral individual, he is an overbearing perfectionist who demands that anything his children do reap instant, flawless results." Extra pressure that the audience can safely presume Rachel doesn't want on her or her child Emma.

Meaning she filmed herself during all three major relationships of the series.
    4. Although Tom Selleck's character, Richard, is very important to the plot of this episode, he does not appear.
    5. Monica mentions that the fed just lowered housing rates. In the following six years the American housing market would collapse.
    6. When Chandler and Ross are looking at the videos on Richard's shelf, the first video Chandler names is "Magnum Force." While it is a Clint Eastwood movie, Tom Selleck is famous for his role as Magnum on "Magnum PI."

    2. Matt LeBlanc played Christina Applegate's boyfriend in three episodes of Married with Children (1986).
    3. The original plan for this episode was to bring back Reese Witherspoon as Jill Green, however Witherspoon was unavailable so the writers re-wrote the role as Amy Green and cast Christina Applegate in the role.

The show never directly stated what religious background Rachel Green had (if any) but strongly implied she had Jewish grandparents at least in an episode where a young man who was interested in her mentioned he liked talking to her grandmother who was nicknamed "Spuds". As Rachel claimed to be about 2 months pregnant at Monica and Chandler's Halloween party in season 8, Emma would have been born in about May/June the next year. Since Pheobe's birthday dinner a few episodes before was on Halloween, this would put Emma at around 6 months of age, meaning that Rachel would yet to have changed a single poopy diaper in the first 6 months of Emma's life.
    6. In the beginning, Ross mentions peasant shirts. Rachel and Monica then each wear a peasant shirt in the episode.

No one understood his cries of "Aaron Burr!" because he didn't have a glass of milk to de-stick his palate.
