The One After Ross Says Rachel

S05E01 Episode aired 24 September 1998
  1. Mike Hannigan's parents' "boring friends" from season 9 are at the wedding reception in London. They're standing at the buffet.
  2. This is the first time Phoebe uses her alias name "Regina Phalange" when she pretends she is someone else
  3. Rachel travels to Greece. In real life, Jennifer Aniston is half Greek and also lived in Greece for a year.
  4. Unofficially, this episode can also be considered as "The One with Ross's Wedding: Part Three".
  5. The opening credits are different than usual, showing mostly the events over the last couple episodes.
  6. At the wedding dinner, Chandler says that he and Monica did it seven times the night before. Later in the run of the series we learn that they only had one condom. Either they decided to use it seven times - or only once and were unprotected the other six times.

The One with All the Kissing

S05E02 Episode aired 1 October 1998
  1. Joey, wanting to kiss the girls as well, says "Well, I guess it's time for me to say goodbye too, mon frère" to them. "Mon frère" means "my brother" in French.
  2. Near the end of the episode, Rachel mentions the song "With or Without You". It was the song first played in Season 2 Episode 8 (The One with the List) and later as background music in Season 3 Episode 15 (The One Where Ross and Rachel Take a Break)

The One Hundredth

S05E03 Episode aired 8 October 1998
  1. Lisa Kudrow's favorite episode.
  2. In the hospital, after Phoebe asks Rachel if she spoke to her brother, the doctor chuckles and says "oh, Fonzie" and Rachel says "You know who I always liked? Mork". Mork was played by Robin Williams in two episodes on Happy Days. In season 3 Episode 24 "The One With The Ultimate Fighting Champion", in the beginning of the episode Robin Williams appears with Billy Crystal as a regular person named Tomas.
  3. This is the 100th episode hence the episode name "The One Hundredth"
  4. Debra Jo Rupp, who recurred as Alice, was given time away from her new role as Kitty Forman on "That '70s Show" to appear in this episode.
  5. When Alice rushes out of the elevator you can see 2 people on the phone. On the 3rd shot the people and the phone are gone.
  6. At the end of this episode, Rachel asks Phoebe if labor and birth really hurts as much as everyone says it does. She replies, "Yeah. You won't be able to take it." However, in season 8 Rachel has a 21 hour labor and her daughter was breech, therefore making Rachel's labor more intense.

The One Where Phoebe Hates PBS

S05E04 Episode aired 18 October 1998
  1. Helen Baxendale (Emily) became pregnant between seasons 4 and 5 and was unable to travel to the US to do any filming for season 5. As a result her only appearances were heavily swaddled in bed clothes, and she had to be written out of the series a lot earlier than intended.
  2. The Magna-Doodle reads "Evil Joe."
  3. In this episode, Rachel states that Monica mentioned her "secret boyfriend" (Chandler) was the best sex she has ever had, which is ironic because Monica is the one who explained/taught the 7 erogenous zones earlier in the series to Chandler when he was dating Kathy.

The One with the Kips

S05E05 Episode aired 29 October 1998
  1. When Monica and Chandler are arguing in their hotel room after the car chase, the theme song for ER (1994) is playing in the background.
  2. Rachel is seen with a bag from Zabar's food store.
  3. This is the first episode where one of the other friends finds out about Chandler and Monica. Joey is the first one to figure this out after hearing they each saw Donald Trump waiting for an elevator, and Monica says she's missing her eyelash curler, which the hotel called and said that Chandler had left one in his room.

The One with the Yeti

S05E06 Episode aired 5 November 1998
  1. The Magna-Doodle says "WHY".
  2. The final onscreen appearance of Helen Baxendale as Emily Waltham. The writers had intended for Emily to be in the series for much longer, but had to write her out to accommodate Baxendale's real life pregnancy.
  3. When Danny opens the door for Rachel and Monica, a black and white painting of the Titanic is seen behind him.

The One Where Ross Moves In

S05E07 Episode aired 12 November 1998
  1. The message on the Magnadoodle reads: "No girls allowed!"
  2. The music playing at Danny's party is "Every Word Means No" by Smash Mouth. This track is also played on Dick Clark's New Year's Rockin' Eve in The One With The Routine.
  3. When Rachel and Monica are in the coffee house Rachel makes a comment that she "doesn't go after guys right after they get divorced". However, earlier in the series she went after Joshua who had just gotten divorced.
  4. Danny's party is filmed outside Monica and Rachel's apartment. If you look through the crack in the door behind Monica you can see the colors of her apartment.

The One with All the Thanksgivings

S05E08 Episode aired 19 November 1998
  1. Matthew Perry grew a goatee specifically for the scene when Joey scared him with the turkey in "The One With All The Thanksgivings".
  2. Rachel and Chandler met for "the first time" three times. They met at Monica's house for Thanksgiving ("The One With All The Thanksgivings" episode #5.8), when Central Perk was a bar ("The One With The Flashback" episode #3.6), and in the coffee house ("The Pilot"). Rachel and Chandler also kissed at a college party not long after they met.("The One Where The Stripper Cries" episode #10.11).
  3. We find out in this episode that Monica became a chef because Chandler told her to become one.
  4. In the flashback when Joey has the turkey on his head, Phoebe's painting of a woman climbing out of the frame is briefly visible to the left of the front door. This is when she was still living in the apartment. The same painting is occasionally visible throughout the various series and finally forms the focus of "The One With Ross' Grant" (s10e06) when Rachel and Monica fight over who should get it.
  5. Chandler's haircut during the first visit to Ross's parents' resembles the style made popular by 1980s band, Flock of Seagulls. On their second visit in 1988, both Ross and Chandler are wearing outfits inspired by the characters from Miami Vice.
  6. In the 1987 flashback, Ross and Chandler wore Members Only jackets. In the year following, they wore suits reminiscent of Don Johnson's and Phillip Michael Thomas's from Miami Vice (1984).
  7. Chandler was 20 years old in the year 1988.
  8. Near the end Monica drops a knife on Chandler's foot, which causes him to lose a toe. In real life. Matthew Perry is missing part of his middle right finger from his hand being shut in a door when he was little.
  9. When watching the entire run in strict chronology, this episode contains story arcs that both pre-date, and overlap with "The One With The Flashback" episode #3.06), before starting with the official starting episode ("The Pilot" #1.01). Includes the early days of Ross and Rachel, Ross knowing Chandler, and Monica and Chandler. It also seems to imply that Chandler triggered Monica's massive weight loss.

    1. When Phoebe is arguing with Joey about learning to play guitar, she mentions him annoying everyone with "Bad Bad Leroy Brown". In season 2 episode 23, Richard says he will be singing this song in the shower and asks Monica for clarification on the lyrics.
    2. When Ross hits himself in the forehead with lotion, this was accidental. It was kept in the script because it was so funny!
    3. Before it was officially New Year, Ross says,'Woo, no divorces in '99' and Rachel corrects him telling him his divorce with Emily isn't final,and then Ross says,'only 1 divorce in '99'. He later that year got divorced from Rachel., meaning he actually had two divorces in 1999.

    The One with Chandler's Work Laugh

    1. Lisa Kudrow was actually afraid of the chick and duck, despite her character picking them up.
    2. Monica and Chandler purposely lose to his boss and his boss' wife. At the tender age of 13, Matthew Perry was a nationally ranked tennis player in Canada.
    3. The magna-doodle changes to "J- Kim called again"
    4. The Magna-doodle says "Joey call Kim".
    5. Chandler's boss refers to "President Clinton and her husband, Bill." In actuality, Hillary Clinton did unsuccessfully run for president twice, becoming the first woman major party presidential nominee in 2016.
    6. The movie that Joey and Phoebe go see, "You've Got Mail" was actually in theaters at this time. It released in December 1998 and this episode premiered on January 1999.
    7. Janice jokingly alerts Joey that she's slept with "two out of the three", alluding that he is next.

    The One with Joey's Bag

    S05E13 Episode aired 4 February 1999
    1. Phoebe's father tells her that when she was a baby he used to sing her a lullaby that he made up. The lyrics are "Sleepy girl, sleepy girl, why won't you go to sleep; sleepy girl, sleep girl, you're keeping me up.". The melody of the lullaby is the same as "Smelly Cat" Phoebes most famous song.
    2. The source of inspiration for Phoebe's "Smelly Cat" is finally revealed.
    3. Phoebe is left handed. This was shown in Friends: The One with Joey's Bag (1999), during the scene where Phoebe meets her father in Central Perk.
    4. Phoebe's father is never seen or mentioned ever again after this episode.
    5. In Season 2 Episode 9, "The One With Phoebe's Dad," Phoebe tells the friends that her real dad ran out on their family before she was born. But, in this episode, Phoebe's dad mentions that he burnt the formula and sang to her, indicating he was a part of her life after her birth.

    The One Where Everybody Finds Out

    S05E14 Episode aired 11 February 1999
    1. Shares highest individual episode rating out of 238 episodes with The Last One: Part 2 (6 May 2004), but the latter has more votes.
    2. This first episode to feature Hugsie, Joey's stuff penguin animal.
    3. The Magna-Doodle depicts a guy skiing.
    4. The episode aired on Aniston's 30th birthday.
    5. The apartment that Ross is trying to rent is owned by "ugly naked guy", but all of the boxes in the apartment are labeled as containing clothing. There are boxes labeled "underwear", "shoes", "sweaters", etc.
    6. Phoebe tells Chandler that they are about to kiss for the first time, although they kissed each other previously in "The One with All the Kissing". However, this is their first kiss as a hypothetical couple; the kisses in the previous episode were uncalled for and were only used for their friendship.
    7. This episode marks the only time in the series that any of the main cast share any dialogue with Ugly Naked Guy, when Ross meets him to inquire about subletting his apartment. This episode is also Ugly Naked Guy's final appearance in the series.
    8. In Friends: The One Where Everybody Finds Out (1999), whenever one of the characters is discussing about the knowledge of Monica and Chandler's relationship, the word "know" and its variants is spoken 37 times.
    9. This is the 2nd time Chandler says "I Love You" to Monica. This first time it occurs is S5 Ep 8 "The One With the Thanksgiving Flashbacks" even though it is depicted in this episode that it's the first time he says it.

    The One with the Girl Who Hits Joey

    S05E15 Episode aired 18 February 1999
    1. Magna doodle says "CB + MG 4Ever"
    2. Ross (David Schwimmer) is called "3B" by the other residents of his new building. Schwimmer played Josh '4B' Goldstein (nicknamed after his apartment) on NYPD Blue (1993).
    3. The girl who punches Joey is Soleil Moon Frye, who played Punky Brewster.
    4. Rachel mentions that Monica is almost 30. In reality, Courtney Cox was already 30 by the time Friends first went on the air.
    5. When Chandler proposes to Monica to prove that he's not afraid of a serious relationship, they kneel down together in the living room of Monica's apartment. This is the exact same location and position they are in when their real proposal happens in "The One with the Proposal Pt. 2" (#6.25)

    The One with the Cop

    S05E16 Episode aired 25 February 1999
    1. In-jokes and obscure references: Rachel references Jane Pauley from Dateline NBC (1992) as the only woman she'd ever kiss while helping Ross getting his couch upstairs to his apartment. Jane Pauley has twins (a boy and a girl) born in 1983 named Ross and Rachel.
    2. The Magna-Doodle says "Joey, Your Agent Called."
    3. A target is drawn on the Magna-Doodle after Pheobe finds a police badge.
    4. Phoebe references Andy Sipowicz from NYPD Blue (1993) when she's talking to Gary outside Central Perk.
    5. The saleswomen who gives Ross cm store credit also starred in Scrubs, whose creator Bill Lawrence was a writer for season one in Friends.
    6. Ross says in this episode that he and Rachel have had sex 298 times. Including the only other two times they had sex, when they conceived Emma and before Rachel left for Paris, Ross and Rachel would have had sex an even 300 times in the duration of the series.

    The One with Rachel's Inadvertent Kiss

    1. Ross meets the "Window Woman" and asks her if she wants to get a coffee and she says yes but we never see her again as this is the only episode she's in
    2. When Chandler leaves for the bathroom, he says he has to 10-100. This is a reference to "Smokey and the Bandit".
    3. Third episode in which Ugly Naked Guy's / Ross' apartment changes numbers; 102, 3B and unmarked.

    The One Where Rachel Smokes

    1. In real life, at the time of filming, Jennifer Aniston (Rachel) actually was a smoker but on the verge of quitting.

    The One Where Ross Can't Flirt

    S05E19 Episode aired 22 April 1999
    1. Phoebe can speak Italian to Joey's grandmother, but couldn't to Rachel's former lover, Paolo.
    2. The Magna-Doodle shows the New York city skyline.
    3. Joey's grandmother mentions Capricorn One, that starred Elliott Gould, Ross' and Monica's dad; and James Brolin, whom Phoebe will later claim to be the father of her imaginary baby when covering for Rachel at Monica's and Chandler's wedding.

    The One with the Ride Along

    S05E20 Episode aired 29 April 1999
    1. The Magna-Doodle depicts an annoyed face after Joey seemingly protected Ross over Chandler.
    2. Joey and Chandler have a four pack of Boddingtons on top of their fridge. This was the beer they tried in London.
    3. Ross says to Joey and Chandler, "I'm more cop than you two." This is another reference to David Schwimmer's stint on NYPD Blue (1993).
    4. Final appearance of Emily Waltham.
    5. The PlayStation game under the money in Ross's apartment is Rally Cross.
    6. After listening to Emily's message on Ross' machine, Monica says Rachel's signature line "Noooo!", to which Rachel replies with Monica's signature line "I know!"

    The One with the Ball

    S05E21 Episode aired 6 May 1999
    1. (episode #5.21), Chandler visits Phoebe's boyfriend Gary (Michael Rapaport) at his precinct. When they sit at Gary's desk, a blackboard with names written in blue chalk is prominent behind his head. All of the names on the blackboard are references to or characters from the films of Stanley Kubrick (Alex, Dim, Hal, Kissoff, even Redrum).
    2. The episode aired exactly five years before the series finale. Numerically, this episode also marks the halfway point in the series, being the 118th out of the 236 episodes.
    3. The Magna-Doodle depicts a spaceship.
    4. David Schwimmer is actually allergic to cats.
    5. When Joey is in the bathroom, you can clearly tell he is using both hands to catch the ball.
    6. Hairless cats are hypoallergenic so Monica coming in contact with Rachel's temporary pet would not have caused her to have an allergic reaction.

    The One with Joey's Big Break

    1. The man who delivers the balloon bouquet to Joey is not Michael G Haggerty (Treeger), but actually John C McDonnell, who is credited as "the Grip" in this episode. Mike Haggerty has a much rounder face and different voice than John C McDonnell.
    2. The filming location "outside of Las Vegas" is actually Vasquez Rocks Natural Area Park in Agua Dulce, CA. That same location is used often in the Star Trek series and is referred to as Gorn Rock by many Trekkies.

    The One in Vegas: Part 1

    S05E23 Episode aired 20 May 1999
    1. Joey's PIN 5639 spells "Joey" on a telephone keypad.
    2. Rachel (Jennifer Aniston), reluctantly takes advantage of being naked while having the apartment to herself. Jennifer Aniston did the whole sequence herself. The scene was written because Aniston was dating Brad Pitt at the time and Pitt was known for walking around his home in the buff.
    3. Thomas Lennon appears in this episode as a blackjack dealer that Joey believes is his hand twin. Lennon and Matthew Perry would later star in the movie 17 Again (2009) and the television reboot of The Odd Couple (2015).
    4. On the plane, Ross asks another passenger if he knows the teacher who had her student's baby. The teacher he's referring to is Mary Kay Leternou.

    The One in Vegas: Part 2

    S05E24 Episode aired 20 May 1999
    1. When Monica and Chandler are at the craps table and are rolling the dice, there is a guy to Chandler's left with a yellow shirt with a pattern on it who appears to be mouthing Monica and Chandlers lines.
    2. Thomas Lennon the man who is Joey's hand twin would later go on to star with Matthew Perry in a remake of The Odd Couple and 17 Again
    3. According to most casinos' rules regarding slot machines, when the "lurker" played the quarter and Phoebe pulled the lever resulting in the jackpot, Phoebe should have gotten the jackpot because she pulled the lever, which placed the wager.
    4. The little boy who laughs at Rachel's mustache is A.J. Foster. Since it was his first time on a set, Kevin Bright hired his real life parents to walk behind him in the scene. After, Bright was so thrilled with his performance that he took AJ into the gift shop on the set and told him he could have anything he wanted. AJ chose a squirting slot machine toy.
    5. When Phoebe pretends to be a businesswoman interested in the blackjack dealer and Joey being hand twins, she uses the name "Regina Phalange". The phalanges are the bones that make up the fingers of the hand (and the toes of the foot).
