The One Where Monica Gets a Roommate
S01E01 Episode aired 22 September 1994
- Matt LeBlanc had a fever and flu the first day. He was at 102 degrees during the pilot and had to repeatedly use a variety of remedies to attempt to cure it.
- According to the producers, a questionnaire regarding Monica's promiscuity was passed out at the taping of "The Pilot" at the request of NBC. Apparently NBC considered Monica a slut for sleeping with Paul the Wine Guy on their first date.
- The interstitial music and city scene after Rachel is shown sitting at the bay window to her preparing coffee for Joey and Chandler originally featured a shot of the Brooklyn Bridge with the World Trade Center towers prominently in the background. After the September 11 attacks, the interstitial scene was changed to a shot of the exterior of the building where Monica. Joey, and Chandler lives. However the original scene can be seen on DVD releases published prior to the attacks.
- The inside of Joey and Chandler's apartment isn't seen until the third episode.
- Joey and Chandler pour their Rachel made coffee into the plant on the table. At the end of the episode, the plant on the table is dead.

- The idea of the six lead actors negotiating as a single unit has been credited by the rest of the main cast, especially Matt LeBlanc, as the brainchild of David Schwimmer. Ironically, Schwimmer later annoyed the other regulars because on two occasions the rest of the cast all agreed to sign long-term deals to continue the show but he hesitated and both time was (by a fair margin) the last cast regular to agree to continue; however, the decision to make a Season 10 the last one was a prompt and unanimous one from all six that was made late in Season 9.
- One of the credit cards that everyone convinces Rachel to cut up is actually a library card.
- Matt LeBlanc said after the show was finished with its run that the idea for the six regular cast members to negotiate their salaries as a unit came from David Schwimmer, who has noted that he got the idea from how his Lookingglass Theatre company had undertaken similarly difficult negotiations and succeeded as a group.
- Throughout the series we meet Ross and Monica's parents, Chandlers parents, Joeys parents, Rachel's parent, and Phoebes birth parents. Two of Joeys Grandmothers, Monica and Ross' grandmother, Phoebes grandmother.
- First episode with Monica's name in the title
- The barista in Central Perk who asks Rachel if she can get her anything when Rachel comes in in the wedding dress is Jasmine, the woman who works with Pheobe at the massage parlor in later episodes. Jasmine is Gunther's roommate, who told Gunther about Ross sleeping with Chloe. Gunther then told Rachel about Ross and Chloe. She is also the massage therapist that Frank Jr mistakes for a Hooker.
- Throughout the series, Rachel is the only leading female to have retained some sort of relationship with all three leading men at some point or another. She and Ross of course dated at different times throughout the series and had a baby together, she and Joey date very briefly in season 10 after making out in Barbados, and it is revealed in a flash back that she made out with Chandler whilst at a college party with Monica when they went to visit Ross at school.
- After Monica finds out that Paul lied to her in order to sleep with her, she asks if she has a "beacon that the only dogs and men with severe emotional problems can hear" She ends up marrying Chandler, who has severe emotional problems.

Lisa played Ursula 22 times in Mad About You, from 7 October 1993 to 24 May 1999 and 7 times in Friends from 23 February 1995 to 1 November 2001, meaning her role as Ursula lasted almost as long as her role as Phoebe. During the two series' five-season overlap from 1994 to 1999 she never appeared in Mad About You as Phoebe.

- Matt Leblanc named his favorite all-time "Joey" moment in this episode when Joey childishly pretends at the hospital that the hockey puck is repeatedly coming straight at his head.
- It is almost impossible that Chandler would not know that Carol was the first (and only) woman Ross slept with because during college they were roommates and also best friends.
- The man of the title is George Stephanopoulos.

- Matthew Perry's favorite episode.
- Jill Goodacre is a former Victoria's Secret model; she is married to Harry Connick Jr..
- David Schwimmer is actually allergic to cats.
- The joke about how Monica had had a crush on Joey when they first met was a reference to the plans the show's producers had during the initial development of the show. Before final casting was completed, the producers had planned for Joey and Monica to be the first couple on the show. After Jennifer Aniston was cast as Rachel, it was decided that Ross and Rachel would fill that role instead.

When Marlo Thomas guest starred as Rachel's mother in the second season, Rachel was upset that her mother wanted to be more like her and was planning to leave her father, and said "couldn't she just copy my haircut?", a joke about the large number of people who had copied her haircut.
- The scene outside in the cemetery is the first in the series to be filmed off the set, on location.
- Another idea for the name of the coffeehouse was "Java Joe's". This idea was later reused in this episode, when, on the picture of Nana and her own friends, Nana wrote, "Me and the gang at Java Joe's."
- Unofficially, this is also known as "The one when Chandler denies he's gay"
- After the establishing shot of a graveyard, once they show the actors, the Church Spire and other buildings in the background of their graveyard scene appear to be vaguely familiar buildings on part of either of the Warner Bros. back lots. This would make logistical sense as WB would have accumulated decades of gravestone set dressings in stock, and a real graveyard would probably not want the Ross fall gag shot on their land.
- It was still not revealed at this point in the series if this Nana is Monica and Ross' grandmother that moved to Florida that also had the apartment Monica lives in, or if this is their other grandmother. However, when Monica and Ross are speaking, she says her mother meaning her mother's mother. Then we find that the grandmother who died is Monica and Ross's mom's mother.

- Chandler comments that his mother is a "Freudian nightmare." Subsequently, Ross and Chandler both get into one Freudian Slip each: Ross refers to Mrs. Bing and Chandler refers to Ross.
- Joey says to Ross that you should never kiss your friend's mom but sisters and hot aunts are okay. But in a later episode, S3E11 (The One Where Chandler Can't Remember Which Sister), Joey gets mad at Chandler for kissing his sister.
- When Chandler's mom was being interviewed she said that she bought her son's first condoms. In a later episode, when Chandler and Monica were planning to get married, Chandler mentioned that he had an old condom in his wallet that he had since he was twelve. They will then go on to play another on screen couple 9 years later, Annette and Paul D'Angelo, the parents of Will Truman's boyfriend, Vince, in the 'Will & Grace' episode 'Queens for a Day'.
- With one and only appearance and a very notable one, in this episode, Joey's parents have made the least appearances on the show out of all the other friends' parents. All others have made more than a single appearance. Phoebe's mother Phoebe Abbott makes three appearances in "The One At The Beach" (S3:E25), "The One With The Jellyfish" (S4:E1) and The One With Phoebe's Uterus (S4:E11); whilst her father Frank Buffay appears in "The One With Joey's Bag" (S5:E13). Chandler's mother Nora Tyler Bing appears in "The One With Mrs. Bing" (S1:E11) and also in a flashback in "The One With All The Thanksgivings" (S5:E8), whilst his cross-dressing father Helena Handbasket is seen in "The One With Chandler's Dad" (S7:E22). Rachel's father is the last of the friends' parents to make an appearance on the show.

- Melora Hardin and Matthew Perry would go on to co-star in 17 Again (2009).
- The very enthusiastic studio audience's reaction to guest star Jon Lovitz entering the apartment, for the first time, gives a good baseline indication of why later decisions were made to re-shoot "distracting" audience reactions to certain bigger guest stars' first appearances, and why some additional shots were later re-shot without a studio audience.
The One with Two Parts: Part 1
S01E16 Episode aired 23 February 1995
- The bar in which Joey and Chandler first see Ursula is the same bar used in How I Met Your Mother (2005).
- Ursula Buffay, Phoebe's twin sister, is a waitress in the TV show Mad About You (1992). In this "crossover" episode between the two sitcoms, Fran (Leila Kenzle) and Jamie (Helen Hunt) visit Central Perk and mistake Phoebe for Ursula.
- This appears to be the only episode where two characters, Ross and Mr Heckles, separately break the fourth wall by seemingly staring directly at the camera, in a "Laurel and Hardy" style homage.
The One with Two Parts: Part 2
S01E17 Episode aired 23 February 1995
- George Clooney and Noah Wyle appear in this episode as the "cute doctors" which aired during the time they played doctors on the show ER (1994).
- In the episode, Ross mentions that he had a dream that he had to use his newborn son as a football against the Tampa Bay defense. In the episode before, at Carol's Lamaze class, he picks up a baby doll and mimics throwing it, telling Susan to go deep.
- When Drs. Rosen and Mitchell come to the apartment for the date with Monica and Rachel, they bring a bottle of wine. Dr. Mitchell jokes, "It's from the cellars of Ernest and Tova Borgnine, so how could we resist?" Ernest Borgnine would later appear in an episode of ER (1994), in 1999, a performance that earned him an Emmy nomination.
- Gunther appears in the background of this episode, at Phoebe's surprise party.
- Matt LeBlanc reportedly revealed that there was a rejected ongoing series sub-plot proposal that Joey and Phoebe would have been having casual sex together throughout the entire series. With that in mind, this episode takes on a totally different feel.
The One with All the Poker
S01E18 Episode aired 2 March 1995
- In the beginning of the episode the Friends are whistling a tune, the same one whistled by the main cast of the Breakfast Club.
- In some syndicated versions the scene where Aunt Iris teaches Monica, Rachel, and Phoebe how to play poker is cut out.
The One Where the Monkey Gets Away
S01E19 Episode aired 9 March 1995
- David Schwimmer could not stand working with Marcel the monkey and refused to spend any more time around him than was necessary to finish a scene. The cast and crew agreed with Schwimmer, and when a storyline had Marcel briefly return to the city (during the Season 2 Super Bowl ad) they made sure to get those scenes out of the way before filming anything else.
- According to this episode, there are four floors to the Friends apartment building. In episode 3:11, the One Where Chandler Can't Remember Which Sister, Monica and Rachel have a neighbor directly above them. According to episode 2:3, the One Where Mr. Heckles Dies, Mr. Heckles lives directly below them. That would put Monica and Rachel's apartment either on the 2nd or 3rd floor and Mr Heckles' apartment on the 1st or 2nd. This means in this episode, if Monica and Phoebe are searching for Marcel on the 3rd and 4th floors, it should have been Chandler and Joey who approached Mr. Heckles door, having been searching the 1st and 2nd floors.
- Ms. Universe 1989 (Holland) Angela Visser plays Samantha in this episode.
- Mr. Heckles dresses Marcel in a dress and calls him Patty. This is ironic because Marcel was played by two female monkeys.
The One with the Evil Orthodontist
S01E20 Episode aired 6 April 1995
- Guest star Jennifer Grey (Mindy) played Jeanie Bueller in the film Ferris Bueller's Day Off (1986). Jennifer Aniston played Jeannie Bueller in the short lived spin-off TV series Ferris Bueller (1990).
- In an earlier episode Rachel calls Mindy and tells her that she hopes any of her future children have Mindy's old nose. In this episode Mindy is played by Jennifer Grey, who had a distinctive nose early in her career and had a nose job prior to filming this episode, making her unrecognizable.
- Christopher Miranda is the same kid who appeared in episode 2 Friends: The One with the Sonogram at the End (1994) but played a different character.
- The Russian Tea Room is mentioned in episode 19 in reference to Ross' monkey, Marcel, going there since he's new in the city and then again in episode 20 as a place where Rachel went with her ex-fiance that she left at the altar.
The One with the Fake Monica
S01E21 Episode aired 27 April 1995
- When the episode returns from commercial, Ross has just told Joey and Chandler that he has to give away Marcel. The 3 guys are shown on the couch mimicking the infamous "see no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil" statue often portrayed by 3 monkeys.
- When Monica tells Fake Monica her name is Dutch, Fake Monica says: "Mag ik deze dans van u?" It is one of the few instances in which Dutch is used correctly in an American motion picture (as it is commonly substituted with German). Translated to English the line is: "Can I have this dance with you?"
- Fake Monica spoils the ending of Dead Poets Society (1989).
- When Ross is dropping off Marcel at the airport, he's wearing a banana pin on his lapel.
- Fake Monica tells the real Monica they are going to audition for "Cats" by singing "Memories. "Cats" has the song "Memory", not "Memories"--which itself is the incorrect title for "The Way We Were". Later on when fake Monica is in jail the real Monica makes the same goof.
- Ross wears 2 vests in this episode and Chandler also wears 2.
- Monica tells the Fake Monica that she wouldn't recommend her the film Mrs. Doubtfire, which is starred by Robin Williams. Williams would appear later as an uncredited Central Perk customer on The One With The Ultimate Fighting Champion.
The One with the Ick Factor

- The actor who played Young Ethan, Stan Kirsch, was almost 27 at the time this aired. Kirsch is actually a year older than Jennifer Aniston and Matthew Perry, both born in 1969.
- Monica says that she is 25 years and 13 months old. Given that this episode aired 4 May 1995, she was likely born early in April of 1969.
- This is the first time of many that one of the Friends has had a age difference relationship. The other friends also joked about the age difference when Ross dates Elizabeth and Rachel with Elizabeth's dad in season 6, Rachel dates Josh in 'The one with Joey's new Girlfriend' and Monica again with Richard.
The One with the Birth
S01E23 Episode aired 11 May 1995

The child who ends up playing their son, Cole Sprouse, plays Cody on the hit Disney show The Suite Life of Zack and Cody, and Dylan is the name of his twin brother, Dylan Sprouse who was also on the same Disney show. He also mentions Julian. Cole and Dylan Sprouse are both in Big Daddy (1999) playing Julian.
- During the episode Rachel hits on Carol's obstetrician, who is played by Jonathan Silverman. Later in the series, Rachel's favorite movie is announced as Weekend at Bernie's (1989), which stars Jonathan Silverman.

- Three days before the 16th anniversary of this episode's original air date, 'David Schwimmer' became a father in real life.
- Monica mentions wanting a baby and eventually comments on her jealousy of some woman with twins. In the series finale, she adopts newborn twins.
- Chandler and Monica fight about Monica not being married. Later in the series, the two marry.
- It could be argued that Ben is actually named in honor of Phoebe, due to the clothing she wears at a key scene in this episode.

- First title to include Rachel's name.
- The Scrabble board game that Chandler bought as a birthday gift for Rachel is the "Deluxe Travel Edition".

- Chandler and Phoebe wear vests in this episode.
- As Ross and Julie enter the terminal behind them you can see Bill Lawrence, a writer for the first season, walk in behind them. He has dark brown hair and is talking to a fellow passenger.
