White Lies

1. Milica Govich who plays the judge is the aunt of episode director Milena Govich. Milena Govich also previously played Detective Nina Cassady.
2. Batten disease, the illness Emily Goodall has, is a real disease. It is a fatal disease of the nervous system that affects children and young adults, it is a genetic disease inherited in an autosomal recessive form. Batten disease is part of a family of neurodegenerative diseases called neuronal ceroid lipofuscinosis (NCL), caused by excessive accumulation of certain types of fats and proteins (lipopigments) in the nervous system and other tissues including the liver, spleen, myocardium, and kidneys. Signs and symptoms of the disorder usually appear around 5-10 years of age, with gradual onset of vision problems and seizures. Specific symptoms include behavioral changes, slow learning or regression, repetitive speech, clumsiness & stumbling, decreased body fat & muscle mass, curvature of the spine, hyperventilation, teeth grinding and constipation. Over time, affected children experience mental impairment, worsening seizures and progressive loss of sight, speech and motor skills. Batten disease is invariably fatal and severely shortens lifespan, life expectancy is dependent on the age of onset, with symptoms appearing earlier resulting in a shorter lifespan. Infants with onset of symptoms between 6 months to 2 years have a life expectancy of only 4-6 years (age at death). Young children with onset of symptoms between the ages of 2-4 years have a life expectancy of 8-12 years, children with onset between ages 5-10 have a life expectancy of 15-21 years; and while it's extremely rare for the disease to occur in the preteen years, tweens & early teens with onset between ages 11-14 have a life expectancy of 22-30 years.
3. The pharmaceutical company in this episode is said to be less profitable than others because it focuses on developing drugs to treat rare diseases, as opposed to making drugs to treat common illnesses. This was the primary barrier to drugs being made for rare diseases for a long time, while it may seem cold and callous, there are a number of rare diseases that only a small number of people have, there wouldn't be enough of a demand for a drug to cover the costs of research and development, let alone make a profit. Since it costs tens or hundreds of millions of dollars to develop a novel drug, pharmaceutical companies simply were not able to make drugs for those diseases without getting grants from private entities or institutions. This changed however, with the passage of the Orphan Drug Act, signed into law by President Ronald Reagan in 1983. The Orphan Drug Act provides federal grants to companies for the research and development of drugs for rare diseases affecting fewer than 200,000 people annually in the United States.

2. Kelli Williams previously guest starred in Sisters of Mercy (1992), which aired on March 3, 1992, 34 years before this episode aired. This is among the longest periods of time between guest appearances in Law & Order history.

Accidentally Like a Martyr

1. When the victim's partner played by Eric Stoltz insists on dancing with his daughter, the music in the background is Let's Stay Together, a reminder of Pulp Fiction (1994), in which Stolz plays Lance, Vincent Vega's heroin dealer.
2. While the murder is obviously fictional, this seems to have been inspired in part by the very public accusations of controlling and problematic behavior made by Brooklyn Beckham against his parents, Victoria and David Beckham. In particular, the scene of Eric Stoltz stealing a dance with his daughter that was meant to be with her husband, at her birthday, and groping her, mirrors Beckham's accusations that at his wedding his mother hijacked the "first dance" he had planned with his bride, and "danced very inappropriately on [him]".
